I was wondering if anyone knew off the top of thier head, the maximum current flowing through a 4A starter Motor upon start up? Just need to make sure i'm using the right wires. Stewart. Sam_Q Posted September 3, 2009 Report Share Posted September 3, 2009 the motor rating might not mean too much because dc motors especially series motors like starters draw many times more their rated power during startup. However the only reason wire size would need to be taken into account is of voltage drop. They are just used for too short a time to heat up to a failure point. Medicine_Man Posted September 3, 2009 Report Share Posted September 3, 2009 My Denso copy reduction starter peaks at about 120A on crank when I checked it at TAFE, So it would be higher than that for a Bosch unit. Depends how much load it cops to spin the motor etc... And yes, Bigger cables are good, Big voltage drop and lots of cranking is a good way to kill a starter motor.. You should expect should bursts of 2-300A if I recall correctly.
