Surge Tank Setup

Featured Replies

hey pplz

doin a surge tank setup in my ae86.

just want to make sure ive got all the lines and fittings were there supposed 2 be , can any1 tell me if this set up would be right

the top fitting is the return fuel overflow that goes back down 2 the main tank

the 2nd from top is the return fuel line that comes from the motor

the 3rd is the feed from the intank pump that fills up the surge tank

the 4th bottom fitting is what connects 2 the external pump and goes 2 my motor .

is this the right combination

cheers guys

the way i did mine was just to swap the top two you listed over so i had:

the top fitting is the return fuel line that comes from the motor

the 2nd from top is the fuel overflow that goes back down 2 the main tank

the 3rd is the feed from the intank pump that fills up the surge tank

the 4th bottom fitting is what connects 2 the external pump and goes 2 my motor.

not really saying mine was right, i just didn't want to over-pressurise the surge tank by having the overflow that high..

if i was to do it again id probly get a surgie with only 3 fittings, so the fuel coming from the motor would go straight to the main tank to cool off a bit, probly wouldn't make much of a difference but who knows..

Thats how mine is set-up

The problem with this is the two feed ports are offset slightly to induce a swirl which removes air from the fuel in your surge tank. By having the return on the #2 port it can't do this as effectively. The way the OP describes it is IMO really the only correct way to do it. I wouldn't worry about pressurizing it, aside from the fact it's essentially impossible we're talking about a welded alloy tank that would probaly fail with a few hundred psi up it's arse. Your lift or pressure pump are just not capable of that.

Also the alternative 3 port method you've described would be very bad. The main pressure pump will beat your lift pump and you'll end up with an empty surge tank just idling!
