Lsd Ke 25

whats the opinion on the lsd options for ke25?

not keen on disk conversion,

power to be around 160kw,

width needs to be same as ke25 or shorter due to mags being 15x6 114.3x4pcd +20 offset

so i have found so far..........................

t series : width same? weld mounts? , centre expensive, stud pattern same, drums, centre fairly strong.

r31 : weld mounts, needs shortening, centre cheap, stud pattern same, disk or drum?, centres common and pretty good.

hilux : weld mounts, length same - older model diff, stud pattern not same, cheap strong centre

hiace : weld mounts, length same, centre?, stud pattern same? drum? , centre?

mark II : weld mounts, with apparently same?, same stud pattern, drum?, uses supra centre

so I'm thinking a shortened r31 will be the best bet...

so the housing gets cut and shut and the axels get shortened, then the splines get extended further onto the axel. mounts get chopped off and rolla mounts get welded on.

the centres are common and strong, but wear pretty quickly and arent too common in good nick so iv heard.

anything else? any idea on cost?

r31 limos are crap. your options are either a shortened T series and change the stud pattern on the front to match, and that will do you up to 200fwhp. any more, get a hilux diff shortened, then either re-stud the axles for your stud pattern, or put hilux/falcon suspension in the front, or get custom front hubs made to suit 5 stud wheels all round

R31 LSD's are BW78 LSD's. Same as most Falcon/Commodore, it's a cone type LSD. The cones are pretty cheap, but like you said, they wear pretty quickly. That plus the fact that they aren't very progressive, or very effective for that matter because the surface area isn't very big.

The clutch type LSD's in the T-series diff (and I would assume Hilux) are much better. You can put a lot more clamping force on, they're more progressive, and they last longer. Between the T-series LSD's the word is that the Cusco's and the Kaaz's are the ones to go for, the TRD ones have very small clutches in comparison. But that's just what people tell me.

ok taped it up and it appears to be 1320mm. now i have started looking for diffs around that width, anywhere from 1310 to 1325 might fit ok. so far not much luck, some older nissan/datsun diffs, volvo, fiat is what i can find...

much research has been done and its either the r31 or the hilux depending on cost of diff and conversion costs.

other diffs : some were too wide, rare/expensive/unreliable lsd centres, stud pattern different, some too heavy, some weak axels etc.

yeah escort diff would be good for the k series motors, its the same hub to hub width I'm pretty sure.

yeah i did check out the f series! its pretty good all round but the centres aren't too common or cheap so i seemed to find, if they were cheaper i would probably opt for one, although id recommend a f series diff from a mkII corona for a ke30, due to it also being same stud pattern and same width 1370mm.

do you guys get many jdm A6# series celica, carina or celica/supra or *T14# corona? the jdm GT spec on all of these had F series lsd as an option although being IRS. the internals of the F series irs swap into a live axle head. i have also done this on the G series as i found an MX73 markII with G315 irs lsd and swapped into a dead hilux lsd head. the std F lsd are usually worn by now but can be rebuilt. toyota still sell replacement clutches etc (well nz do anyway) to rebuild em. the G series lsd i had my local diff shop look at.. he surface ground the teflon lining off the clutches, installed a stiffer spring and shimmed it up to get correct preload and its nice n tight! same thing for F series if you don't want to rebuild by factory methods. TRD still sell new lsd for T F and G diffs. but yeah kaaz and cusco etc are good if you can afford.

jdm liteace 4wd often have F series live axle too. the *R20 series are a lil shorter than the *R3# but if your shortening then the longer the better. ive found the 5x6"(?) stud pattern have the same size locating ring (spigot) in the centre as rwd corolla's whereas the 5x4.5" /114.3 have a larger one so can't fit factory corolla rims. also watch for the diff vent being on the exhaust side as they often get knocked off. another one is the estima/emina or previa, maybe called tarago in Aus, jdm ones anyways come with F series live axle. a drum one i saw had a tapered housing so you wouldnt be able to shorten it. the disk version ive yet to check out... but drums and disks on F and G series diff are F'n huge for a rolla.

an interesting find was when lookin through the jap trd website, i noticed altezza have same lsd part number as A6# celica carina etc. so went a bought a second hand altezza torsen lsd and sure enough the F series axles fit, crown wheel swaps over and the torsen carrier fits in the live axle F series head. thats as far as ive got on it tho. the pinion gear looks like it might just scrape the torsen housing so a little tweak on the lathe may be required.. but anyways some more options for ya. :)

T series are good for most rwd rolla unless going boosted option. lockers will break T series axles with decent tyres, i got two to proove it, and one of em was on a std 2tgeu in the wet ffs :D
