Freaky Fuel Gauge

I have an 82 and the fuel gauge is dodgy and usually shows empty. Off the scale empty. But when it gets low, and has about 10 litres left in it, it shows as down in the last quarter of the gauge.

 

Any clues guys?

So if you fill up with a full tank, does it read anything? or even when its not full?

 

Its prob just a sender unit or the fact that the sender unit has moved and is only going to give a reading when there is a certain amount in the tank.

Reads dead empty when full. Guess it is a dodgy sender.........

Could easily be the guage the can't handle the increase in voltage since its grown old not too sure investigate these options first :D

Mines the same. Zero on full, then right about half a tank, then zero but the fuel light works.

Fuel light and sender are on a different circuit, Change the sender, It is only a 5 min job.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread....buuuuut

 

I installed a tacho dash into my ke70 a while ago now, from memory the fuel gague never worked, never bothered me to be honest, although it would be nice to have.

 

Replacing the sender is a 5min job?? Same deal with a ke70? Where abouts is it located or what does it look like??

How do you change the sender? I reacon mines faulty on my AE92.....when the guage shows off the scale empty and i go to fill up it still has bout 15litres left.... i wouldnt mind changing it

Thats pretty normal for all the toyotas I have.

On the AE82's you lift the rear seat and the sender unit is under the removable cover.

sounds like a hilux i used to have if it was full it read it was empty and when it was empty it read it was full lol always thought my fuel gauge was made in ireland because i replaced the sender and the float in the tank did every possible thing and it still liked going backwards
