Hi all,

 

Straight cut or dog gears whatever you want to call them, in a T50, has anyone ever heard of such a kit for the T50, I have had a bit of a look over the net and dragged up f*@$k all so my next step was here, I thought if anyone has done it or found anything like this it would be here.

 

I’m interested in seeing if it has be done and if its worth it or if it’s just as easy to run a W5X of some kind, or has anyone had any kind of gear work done to the T50 to strengthen it?

Let me know I’m very interested in finding out what you all have done as I think the T50 is a fantastic little gearbox with allot of potential and allot of people under rate it over the bigger W series box.

Dog and straight cut are two different things.

Both are a rare in a T50, but they have been done before.

 

Straight cut gears are mechanically more efficient but weaker.

While the dog is referring to the way the gear select.

 

If you are looking for better ratios, Albins will do any ratio for $500-600 a gear.

i dare say both straight cut gears and a dog selection setup would be a complete and utter pain in the butt to drive anywhere except a race track.

 

straight cut gears are also LOOUDDD, reverse gear is straight cut and youve heard the nice whining noise they give out.

 

the T50 is good in its form, but it it is still a pretty small gbox not really designed to take alot of power (they came behind a 1.6L n/a remember) and any money you spend on it to get it up to scratch (sounds alot by the 500/600 price tag on single ratios) you may be better off just going the W box option.

thanks, i had a bit of a look, they do some really cool stuff,

I've seen both TRD and Quaife close ratio T50's sell on Trademe.

Efficiency is about the only reason for one, and given the thousands spent on maybe 1% gain in gear efficiency, it's only any use for a proper, and I mean proper race car. For the money you spend on the gears you could buy a full set of coilovers or a turbo setup etc.

 

Waste of money for a streeter. And honestly there was a wrx with a straight cut box kicking around near my work and you could hear the piece of shit whining from half a kilometer away.

yeah i wouldn't waste my time with a straight cut gear kit, even if you are chasing every last HP.

They break too easy compared to a helical cut gear set.

 

A dog setup on the other hand would be great in the rally car, not having to clutch on the down changes frees up a foot to do other things (left foot braking), but the H patten shifter wouldn't help the box any.

Really need a sequential shift with a engine cut to get the best out of them.

 

Money would be better spent on a good close ratio gearset,as long as everything else in the car is right!!!

These guys do a straight cut dog engagement set for the T50. i have driven one in anger and they are smooth smooth smooth, infact, i have straight cut dog set in a c56 fwd box made by these guys and its the same, smooth smooth smooth. and to be honest, they are not that noisey... it really comes down to the manufacturers tooth profile of the gear as to how noisey they are.

I know albins can do a 1:1 5th helical/synchro box, I was about to order one when I scored a KR engineering ( Holinger before they were Holinger) T50 box with dogleg 1st where 5th is and H pattern for the rest of the gears. My box has straight cut gears for 1-4 and 5th is helical. I'm not sure if a dog box is really needed as long as the ratios are right that's the key.PPG may do a straight-cut dogbox but don't expect any change from 10 grand. Keep a eye out on the Brindabella forum for some CR close ratio boxes.

Meridian Motorsport have some different bits and pieces listed for T-50.. probably as a distributor for Albins I suspect.
