JJT036 Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 Hey guys, Would I need to run a Catalyc Converter if I went for an EFI Setup on a 4K? Josh  Quote
parrot Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 You don't need to from a functional point of view. Will work exactly the same with or without it. Emission legality is another issue but I doubt that is your concern. Quote
JJT036 Posted January 13, 2011 Author Report Posted January 13, 2011 (edited) Cheers Parrot. :y: We're gonna do EFI setup on the Ke36 and register it WITH the EFI. The most it'll do is put me in front to VicRoads because we'd be helping the emissions. We'll find a Commodore Cat for the RWC and Reg and leave it in there, so then the Motor won't Seize on us. :) Josh  Edited January 13, 2011 by ewt Quote
beerhead Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 I'm fairly sure the law states that you must adhere to the emission laws of the of the year the motor that you convert to is made. Don't quote me on it, but I'm 99% sure you only need to adhere to 4K emissions, but if you like the planet it doesn't hurt running a cat. Quote
kickn5k Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 Hey Josh, if your sticking with the 4k I wouldn't bother with a cat converter as your not converting to an "unleaded" or post 1986 engine. So you'll only need to comply with the earlier emmision laws. If you still decied to put one in to be a bit greener be carefull of the commo cat converters they tend to fall apart internally and block up the exhaust if she runs a bit rich. Could try a performance stainless cat but price compared to a commo second hand on will be a fair bit more. They aren't that hard to fit I'd just wait till vicroads ask for one. EFI Ke-36 pano would deff = WIN stu. Quote
JJT036 Posted January 13, 2011 Author Report Posted January 13, 2011 Cheers guys. :y: I'm one of the lucky ones with Pre-Emission 4K Ke36's, so I won't need all the emissions crap for it. Although, the 4K I'm about to drop in, is from a Fully-Emissioned KE70, but I should be safe. I'll be definitely going for the EFI, as it give's more power, for less Juice - although I'm not much of a Greenie myself. :P I'll need to find a Cat to suit a 2" system so we can just cut out a section of the Exhaust System, and weld the Cat into it. Josh  Quote
beerhead Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 (edited) Hey, you're fitting a cat when you legally don't need to - that make you a greeny dude :P I'm gonna get a 100cpi ebay special cat for my rig, were legal up to a year or 2 ago, but now they can't be bought from exhaust shops and fitted from what I've heard. All legal if you car "already had one though" ;) Edited January 13, 2011 by beerhead Quote
JJT036 Posted January 14, 2011 Author Report Posted January 14, 2011 Yeah I know. A Cat would give me more Power and a longer lifetime for the 4K, 'cause without one, the EFI will cack itself and take the motor with it. :fuzz: Quote

Your emissions will be up shit-creek on unleaded without one, but there is NO impact whatsoever on the engine if there isn't a cat (a BLOCKED cat on the other hand can destroy an engine, but for different reasons). Remember that catalytic converters were only introduced for unleaded fuel - you had EFI cars before that running on leaded fuel without catalytic converters. You don't need one.... lagally or mechanically, so don't bother. :no2: Quote
