Robbie Butler -'79 Drag News

I was at dad's place today prepping the ke20 to go for upholstery and the old man whips out an August 1979 issue of Drag News incorporating a Robbie Butler centre spread on his

13 second N/A 4k Corolla. This is history. I took the time and scanned the arse off this relic and it is here for you in high resolution...

...and it goes to show what we do, ain't nothing new.

also note that on the back of this issue is an advertisement for 'Hardiman Extractor Systems'. Tuned length suite Toyota Corolla was $54.50.

Very nice indeed,

maybe if I grow a moustache like Robbie's, my 'rolla will do 13s too!

But seriously, I'd love to know what work he did to that engine.

Well a formula 3 head wouldd a massive improvement in the beginning. Better annd bigger ports and valves. It also mentions Ivan Tighe of Tighe Engineering, who did the cam for the engine. I think the 115 octane fuel would help the go fast to. The article is well worth the read.

Very nice find indeed.

Would Robbie still be around?

How cool would it be to get some of the old nastalga, the stories and the info Robbie must have in his head.

I would love to know the reaction of the v8 and six cylinder drivers to the mighty rolla.

How many chicks did he pull using the power of the rolla and mo combo?

This is a guy to invite on a cruse. Maybe a cruse to the drags and then he could sit shotgun in a KE10?

Thats if he,s still kicking.

DAM I like.

In a sales book I have for the stock KE10 it says it does the 1/4 mile in a blistering 19.4 seconds. Stock K motor.

So in his KE20 the first engine by the reading of the article is a stock 4K with webbers and exhaust mods ran 15 seconds. SO thats not that bad at all.

But does go to show what an N/A motor ina KE1X can do :) can't wait till I finish mine :)

Is that at Collingrove Philbey?

If so I've seen that one there and a few others at times too.

It may be a stretch of the truth, but I've been told some of these K-engined open-wheelers were getting into the 10 second bracket thanks to being lighter than a corolla....

I still can't get over the 9500RPM bit - just imagine the orgasmic nature of that sound... :hmm:
