Voila! It's all going together nicely. Spigot bearing in, flywheel bolted up and gearbox on. It didn't take too much to get the gearbox on despite not having an alignment tool, which I'm glad of. I'm happy with how it looks.

I'm debating what to do with the cam covers, but that will be later down the track. I was thinking of doing wrinkle black, but now I'm leaning towards getting them back nearish to factory. We'll see. I was going to put the motor in at this point, after doing the mounts of course, but it's so easy to work on out of the car I think I'll just do everything I can then put it in.

So next up. Fit engine mounts and gearbox stays. Sort out the water pump, fit and start putting all the timing gear back on. Then clean up the alternator and starter. Get those on then in she goes :)

Water pump is now cleaned up and mounted. Harmonic balancer is also done. I spent a fair amount of time on it Saturday night but don't feel like I have much to show for it. Just niggly things slowing me down. I began putting on the engine mounts but the bolts that I had seemed to bottom out before they could be tightened. Not sure why, I bagged up all the right bolts when pulling it appart so I could put it back together with out too much trouble.

Theoretically :)

Oh I also painted the timing backing plate and that is on.

So next up will be to put on the cam pulleys, timing belt etc. Dipstick tube needs a tidy and I'll put that back in. Also need to tidy up the water lines that go along the block and the water fitting on the back of the head.

Engine mounts to go on, stays to go on. Tidy up the water pipe on the head and then the inlet manifold, TVIS plate etc. etc.

Still cruising :)

I'll leave it in for the moment I think. Given everything is still stock I'll trust that the Toyota engineers knew what they were doing. A healthier torque curve will be helpful with the cars use.

Nothing new to report with the car. My eldest started kindy and the youngest a new child care so the last few days have been spastics with running around picking up and dropping off kids.

Reckon I'll have an update late tomorrow night...

Frustrating night last night.

First up, did all the timing gear, so the belt is on, lower cover and balancer. That went well and everything slotted together nicely.

Then onto the water gear. All painted. Mounted the outlet on the back of the head, no worries. Tried to mount the pipes that run along the block and worked out that my gasket kit must be for front wheel drive and doesn't have the gasket for the back of the water pump. Booo! Cleaned up the pipe that goes from the back of the water pump to the top water outlet to the radiator and I don't have the O rings to fix that either! Grrrrr

So that stopped me. I wanted to finish off the water system but I need parts.

I'll sort that out and move onto other things.

I probably should get to actually putting on the engine mounts. I've been procrastinating on that job for some reason. Also, still need to clean up the alternator, starter and manifolds. We'll hit that next.

Didn't get anything done last night. The other toy (mountain bike) needed a new tube, some spoke tightening and a shock swapped. I wanted to ride this morning so that took priority.

I did fondle the motor a little bit though ;)

I pulled out the TVIS plate and intake manifold so see how that all fit up. I notice that the plug on the TVIS valve for a JDM motor is different to ADM. That's OK, I'm hoping to use the JDM loom if I can. Also the vacuum damper is rattly on the JDM plate, so I'll have to swap it when I'm cleaning everything up.

Oh, and I put the TRD leads on just 'cause, you know, purdy.

More wheeling, more painting.

Manifold and TVIS plates painted. Wanted to mount them up, but I really want to sort out the water gear first and access becomes more restricted as these things get mounted.

I put on all the engine mounts finally, only to find that my bolts are too long on the passengers side. I'm not sure if they're just too long, or the wholes are gunked up. I've ordered a bottoming tap, so I'll see how we go with that.

Started cleaning the alternator for some paint too.

Next, paint alternator. Change the vacuum can on the TVIS, the one on there now has a rattle. Paint the starter and the throttle body. Then remount everything on the manifold. Hopefully by the time we get to that I've sorted out the water pipes.

And, piccies! I did some mucking around and mounted the exhaust too, just 'cause I could. It's coming together. I'm starting to question my sanity.

You know what, I painted the alternator last night and I was looking at the plug, pondering whether I have that same plug anywhere. I suspect I left its mate in the donor car which is no longer with me. I'll double check, but I don't specifically remember getting it, I'll let you know how I go!

So last night I mounted up the TVIS plate and manifold. I wasn't having much luck finding the gasket for the heater lines so I ended up making one with some cardboard packaging and a ball peen hammer. Hopefully it holds up :) I also painted the alternator as mentioned. I still need to paint the pulley on that one before I bolt it on.

Next is the alternator and water pump pully, and the manifold stay. I'll also clean up the injectors and fuel rail and get that on. Then that side of the engine is pretty much done. Oh, except for the water outlet on the head. I'm still waiting on the bypass pipe which has been ordered. Not a big job though. I also need to clean and paint the throttle body which looks like it might be finicky. Plus the cam covers. It's time to do them, they're ruining the look of the rest of the motor.

Can wait to get this thing in!

Had a few days off, it was my birthday so had a long weekend away with the family by the beach. It was really good, but no progress.

Back into it tonight. Throttle body is done but needs mounting. Top water outlet done, also needs mounting. Cam covers nearly done, just need to do the detailing. New gaskets on but they aren't properly torqued and I suspect I need gasket goo by the cam seals. Haven't checked the manual yet.

Mocked up the leads, must say I'm happy :)

Next up. Do the pulleys, mount the throttle body and the cold start injector and get into the fuel rail and starter.

Oh, my bottoming tap came in. I ordered the wrong size. What a twat, so the left side mounts still need finishing off.

I'm so over it!

Put all the sensors back in the manifold and bolted up the throttle body. The water bypass turned up so the top water outlet is now properly fitted too. All hoses are on that side and it's all pretty ready to go. I also painted the manifold support and the water and alternator pulleys so that's on and looking good. Dipstick tube is painted and in. It's a FWD dipstick which is longer. I think it should work well but it will be close to the top hose, so we'll see how well it works in practise.

The starter is half painted too.

Next, finish painting the starter, paint the fuel rail and clean the injectors. Thinking about it, I won't put the rail on just yet, I might wait until it's in the car as I don't want to have the loom flopping about when I'm putting it in. The injector plugs seem pretty brittle, so I don't want to take them off unless I have to. Also paint the engine lift hooks, and I need to put some sealant by the cam seals and properly install the cam covers. Hopefully my tap will show up so I can sort out the LHS engine mount too.

Then on to the car. Brake lines back in and finish re assembling the front suspension. Oh, and paint the gearbox cross member.

This thing is getting dangerously close to being put in a car!

It'll be a milestone, but there's still a daunting amount to do after that:

Fit surge tank and lines

Fit raditor and heater (needs a bit of fab work to mount the radiator)

Fit the ECU and loom, and work out how to get all the sensors of a JDM AE86 loom to work with the KE70 dash

Fix the diff (it leaks)

Install a bulkhead where the back seat was

Put the dash back together

I'm mad.

No photo this time, it looks much like last time anyway, just picture slightly nicer looking pulleys :)

Right, cam covers are all done up properly. Engine mount is on and starter has been finished off. Engine lifting hooks are also on.

Had a real job finding the engine mount bolts. I've got some in there now but I'm not 100% sure they're the right ones for the job, so I may end up hunting down something else for those. They'll do to get the motor in though.

So I've shuffled the motor out of the way and now it's time to prep the car! So I need to put tie rods back in, fix one side of the say bar and paint and install the proportioning valve and then brake lines.

There's a bit to do, I have to convert the car back from being a bench in the shed!

Motor hiding in it's corner.
