carbonboy Posted July 10, 2011 Author Report Posted July 10, 2011 Has been a frustrating week, spent most of last weekend stuck in a roof cavity rebuilding the components of a gravity-fed hot water system & cleaning up the water threatening to collapse our ceiling in the kitchen. Then a week of late finishing trade school coupled with general life stuff meant that not much has been done :( Gave the drivers sill area a quick sand up, then into the Metal Mend it was. Got into the bog as well ;) And the front jack point. Gave the dash/bottom of windscreen a grind. Then a hit of rust converter & wash off. Then another grind up, wash with w&gr. While the rust converter was doing its thing, I gave this a scuff up & another hit of MetalMend. After it cured, it received another scuff up, a hit of bog & when that cured, just a quick hit of primer over the bare metal to look after it until I get back. Primer applied :) Quote
carbonboy Posted July 19, 2011 Author Report Posted July 19, 2011 No photos this time around as I remembered the camera but forgot the batteries :bash: Sanded back the MetalMend on the drivers side jack points & gave them a light skim of bog to be able to bring them up nice & flat, plus filled a few low points I felt while sanding. Also sanded back all the spot welds I'd bogged along the seam, it's way too involved getting it all dead flat so I'm going with smooth  Damn it's cold tonight! Quote
KEhendo Posted July 20, 2011 Report Posted July 20, 2011 haven't posted in here for a while but i'm still talking your progress. good to see most (if not all) parts have primer on them. no more rust. :y: keep up the good work. Quote

Good to have you back & glad to see your account issues have been sorted out :) If I'm not in the mood for stripping/priming then I'll do some bog work, just keep kicking things along  The cold weather's an energy killer though. carbonboy Posted July 25, 2011 Author Report Posted July 25, 2011 I finally got the remaining passenger side area stripped. Rust convertered. Wire brushed & washed again. Primer. A massive photo dump...yeah, but glad to to have gotten this far :D Am at the point I'd hoped to be at 6 months ago  But... - Days since project started: 567. - Hours spent working on it: 580. Finally averaging OVER an hour per day  Quote
TOMsGPTurbo Posted July 25, 2011 Report Posted July 25, 2011 Carbonboy, Awesome thread, I've stayed up for a couple of hours now reading it and enjoying immensely, all the photos I bet don't do it justice (I've put my uni assignment on hold lol, its 230am and I was suppose to be in bed before midnight but I couldn’t drag myself away from your thread). Your attention to detail is impressive, in today's world that's a rare quality to find, as well as your dedication and perseverance. What you’re doing with your Corolla is what I've being planning to do with mine (when it finally gets a home :( ), however you have managed to put me off (with how much work is involved, I don’t even want see my spare wheel tub lol) and inspire me at the same time. I can't wait to see the finished product. All the best mate. P.S: If someone hits you again when the cars finished, I'll be coming down to sort them out. Quote

P.S: If someone hits you again when the cars finished, I'll be coming down to sort them out. Sorry to have kept you up & away from your Uni assignment, I'm sure you were hoping for the thread to end so you could get stuck into it  :laff: Thankyou for reading, more to come! Truth be told, I've started lots of things in life & never finished them; model planes, painted murals, TAFE courses, relationships... :P Methinks I'd better finish this one! I've also been fortunate enough over my (few) years to have worked with some good people who have taught me their experiences in getting caught out over little things. I still fall for things now & then but, learning still. Oh, there's a few other ride threads out there that have inspired me to do what I have planned! If you'd like to save a whole heap of time, don't paint strip it to bare metal & let it rust on you like I did, doubles the work! :lolcry: I do have my moments (usually on my back looking up at it) where I think "I've got HOW much more to do?" :blinks: Warning, biting the bullet can chip your teeth! P.S - Cheers for the help! :D Quote
TOMsGPTurbo Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 Life is all about new experiances and learning, I'll be 30 soon and I have so many plans in life, but easily destracted (hence I'm writing this post isn't of doing uni lol). Thanks for tip on stripping it down to bare metal, I did that when I was 10 to my BMX, I always wanted a chrome BMX so I sandpapered all the paint off it, I had a chrome BMX for the day, next day it was rusty ...and the rusty look wasn't 'in' for another 15years... Are you decided on what your going to do with body? I suppose no wide body kit resembling a WRC car is not on order? Quote
carbonboy Posted July 26, 2011 Author Report Posted July 26, 2011 I think you may have had the first 'rat-rod' bmx bike! :D No wide body kit plans, too much fabrication for me  Thinking: standard front bumper with c/f lip, standard rear bumper, looking at some sideskirts, c/f bonnet for track/display days & c/f spoiler hatch. Oh & mudflaps! Quote
TOMsGPTurbo Posted July 27, 2011 Report Posted July 27, 2011 That sounds awesome, I can't wait to see it. Quote
carbonboy Posted August 4, 2011 Author Report Posted August 4, 2011 Well, it's been a while & not much has been done, kinda hard to get down to work on it atm. :( Someone let me near the bog again... Touch-up some areas I wasnt happy with. Quote
carbonboy Posted August 8, 2011 Author Report Posted August 8, 2011 I forgot the camera again, making do with the dodgy camera phone. :P Again, let loose with the bog after a scuff up & a wash. Let the hard blocking begin! Nah, not dusty. :P A couple of touch ups. Done & dusted. I have the feeling that I've done this before... :hmm: First coat of primer. A few coats later. One side down! :D Quote
carbonboy Posted August 14, 2011 Author Report Posted August 14, 2011 Scuff, wash & more bog! :) While that's curing, spot-fill some pinholes & some scratches from where I was careless. ;) First round of sanding, shaped with coarse grit sandpaper. After second round of sanding, with a finer grit sandpaper. Ooh ooh, we have primer! :D We also have some spray putty on the bits that needed a little more meat, just for good measure! Damn, my fingers/hands are seriously sore now! :( Quote
JJT036 Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 I just love this thread purely because of the work going into this beast. It's just awesome. Keep it up. :y: Josh  Quote
