Thanks mate! :y: :hmm: You could be right about the hardener, it was freezing cold the night I applied it so I may have been a bit enthusiastic with it. It didnt look THAT intense in real life, could just be the camera that emphasises it :( Sanded up okay, will keep an eye on things when doing the roof! Edited May 17, 2011 by carbonboy Quote
Shuvae86 Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 :o that's a shit load of effort you've put in mate. I picked up a TC 82 for $300 a while back and had to stitch a new rad support on it. That was only a half day job. You'll be stoked when this thing finally gets back on the road :) Sent your forged rods off today so hopefully you see them by mid week :) enjoy! Quote
carbonboy Posted May 16, 2011 Author Report Posted May 16, 2011 (edited) Got off bum... One colour bog now... Now different colour, same bog  Ahh who cares, we have primer! Comparison of orignal & now. Gonna sand some bits back & do some more shaping, not completely happy :hmm: Edited May 16, 2011 by carbonboy Quote

Cheers mate(if you think this is a lot, check out the AE82 sedan by RollaBus_4AGZE (I think that's the username). That car is nucking futs! 8/ ), nice work on the radiator support, I guess you know your way around metalwork? I'm just a newbie so everything takes me ages but it gets done & I'm not paying money I can't afford for someone else to :) The motorvation comes from getting into my 2AC AE80 & just going "urgh". It's like driving a HSV Clubsport R8 then driving an Acclaim/Berlina? not sure which is lower-spec, you get the idea. Not including the time not spent actually working on the car (research, parts hunting etc) its up to about 470 man-hours since I started stripping the parts car. This includes building the buggy, both relocations & cleaning up the mess I make, I have no target, just keeping track in my Project Diary. I hope I got the good set.. Just joking mate! :) Thankyou again, they'll go very nicely with my plans for the future... :D I now await my postie with open arms! Awesome mate. hell lot of difference :y: Thanks man, I'm going to make it a little better, damn being pedantic! It's a spare wheel tub, noone will see it, it's a spare wheel tub, noone will...:bash: :bash: :bash: :) Edited May 21, 2011 by carbonboy Quote
carbonboy Posted May 21, 2011 Author Report Posted May 21, 2011 I think my Rolla & my mates Mini have been up to naughty business, because when I walked in last night there was a new addition to the family! It's getting...a little full in here :( Sanded back MetalMend, would've been easier to hit it quickly with a wire brush first but meh! Dust it off, wash it down, bog it up! :) The fun part today is going to be sanding this without filling my face with bog dust :( I use a half-face respirator to prevent breathing it in but safety glasses can't stop it getting in your eye occasionally & goggles fog up too quick :( Then again if I think this is fun, wait until I get down here... Kid-Ae Posted May 21, 2011 Report Posted May 21, 2011 Got swimming goggles? The suction ones that fit tight on your eyes, are great for stopping ANYTHING getting in your eyes. Trick is to wash your face afterwards with them still on, then when you take them off, nothing gets in your eyes :) Grouse progress mate! Quote
JJT036 Posted May 21, 2011 Report Posted May 21, 2011 I Love Sanding. :) This is looking Really Good. I'm really impressed by how well the Top Half of the Spare Wheel Well came up. You weren't really kidding when you said you were going to Re-Manufacter this to the way it came off the Production line, weren't ya? :) I can only Imagine what Poppa's KE10 is going to be like..... if Poppa ever gets to it. :hmm: Josh  Quote

Umm, no I don't but I think I will be grabbing a cheap pair now . The trick will be getting a pair that sit nicely over the top of the nose section of my respirator & don't cause it to leak. A while back I was wearing a pair of glasses that didnt sit quite right whilst grinding with a wire brush, a strand broke off, bounced off my cheek, off the inside of the glasses & embedded itself in the tear duct of my eye :(. Got it out, no damage done but a powerful reminder of how easily things can go bad. Cheers mate, thanks for the tip! :y: I Love Sanding. :) This is looking Really Good. The upside of a lot of sanding is it can tone up the muscles in your arms quite nicely, so do a whole winters worth of sanding & hit the beach in summer to show off da guns! :laff: http://youtu.be/8z5JFc8-TQM (I can't link with pic, working on it lol) Thanks for the kind words, the photos don't show the little scratches/pinholes I can see in real life, plus I want to reshape the area that needed some loving. It just doesnt look right :hmm: If I'm going to do something like this, I may as well (that phrase AGAIN) do it properly. I don't think I'd ever be happy with the final result if someone could just get down on one knee & see the horrible looking original underside :S Yeah, its underneath, yes this will be street driven regularly, no I'm not exactly looking forward to doing it :P There will be a few twists on how it came off the production line, just enough to define this as my take on Toyotas efforts  Edited May 22, 2011 by carbonboy Quote
carbonboy Posted May 22, 2011 Author Report Posted May 22, 2011 (edited) Hey, you know how I love doing things in the exact order I orginally planned? :no2: Well I lasted about 10 minutes on my back sanding the outside of the wheel tub when I decided to get stuck into the sunroof area instead :laff: My thinking there was that I could sand the bog anytime, where I could only grind & bash things with hammers up until a certain time of night :) This is the first test fit of the sunroof frame...bugger me if it didnt just drop right in! No grind-hole-to-fit, no slop in the hole & generally straight :blinks: :blinks: :blinks: Oh yeah, some 'tweaking' needed here! and here.. And here. Inside view, the reason I filled the hole to move the sunroof forward is it made the release handle easier to grab from the drivers seat. Also had concerns about the handle fouling on the roof croos-beam if moved backwards :) There's something soothing about banging things with a hammer when you've had a sketchy week...Results of Round 1. I missed this? Gonna need some more lovin'. Edited May 22, 2011 by carbonboy Quote
carbonboy Posted May 22, 2011 Author Report Posted May 22, 2011 After Round 2 I'm wondering if I'm just making things worse? :hmm: Sit back & have a think about things... This is what I'm dealing with... A new plan of attack is born... Ground the welds back with grinding disc, then took a coarse brush to it, followed by fine brush on a drill for the hard to get at places. Now giving it a hit of rust converter :) Bubbly goodness. While that was doing its magic, I blocked back the MetalMend fill near the rear passenger wheel arch. Mmmm, no more rust! :D Oh yeah, when grinding metal, either keep your bloody hands out of the way or wear gloves. I have a fresh reminder that recently ground metal is hot... :bash: :bash: Quote
carbonboy Posted May 22, 2011 Author Report Posted May 22, 2011 Wet rag wash, metho wash, looking much better. The evenings work proudly motivated by... Spot near passenger wheel arch washed down & primered. Wire brush the whole kit & caboodle, wash down & primer!! As you can tell, there's still some more 'tweaking' needed but I feel better with some primer on it as it may be another day or three before I can get back to it :( Will just sand & prime again  Quote
JJT036 Posted May 22, 2011 Report Posted May 22, 2011 I'm already wondering how much you're going to spend on this, in Bog, Paint, and Fingers. :hmm: Looking really good. Hope to see this on a Rolla Cruise............ one day. :) Josh  Quote
greenmac80 Posted May 22, 2011 Report Posted May 22, 2011 looking forward to the roof fix... roofs are extremely hard to panel beat/get straight.. a apanel beater once told me that if you've reached the skills of your panel beating to then mix up a HUGE amount of bog... and bog the whole roof in one hit.. then cutback to straightness.. but need to make sure that the bog will be thick enough cos if you need to bog more than once its starts getting even worse.
