RA28GT Posted April 8, 2011 Report Posted April 8, 2011 Hey guys got a bit of a wires issue with my Panel. The 3k takes a long time to build any oil pressure on start up. I'm talking like 5-10 seconds which seems far far too long. Once it's built the pressure it seems fine. I've got around it right now by putting a switch onto the coil that allows me to turn over the car without ignition, but it takes seriously 20-30 seconds of cranking to get the oil light to turn out! Anyone had this before? Oil pump is in the sump right? Which means engine out to replace? Quote
Twinky Posted April 9, 2011 Report Posted April 9, 2011 Is the oil pressure switch itself in good condition? A few other reasons it would take a while to build up pressure is if you have a major leak somewhere in the system or what you don't want it to be - oil pump. Another thing could be a blocked oil pickup. So if you don't have oil leaks around the motor then it is a good possibility that it is either of those. Quote
Felix Posted April 9, 2011 Report Posted April 9, 2011 What sort of oil filter are you running? Quote
19914afc Posted April 9, 2011 Report Posted April 9, 2011 (edited) Shouldn't have to take the engine out to replace it, should just be able to take the sump off and change it. Or cheap possibly cheap oil filter that has no anti drain valve?? Just like when you do a service on a car then start it after changin oil and filter takes a little while to fill the filter, ect. jono1986 Posted April 9, 2011 Report Posted April 9, 2011 Throw in the 3k you got from me, built up pressure quickly. Or try using that Sport oil stuff...ummmmm.....25/50w I think, stuff does wonders on worn motors. Quote
altezzaclub Posted April 9, 2011 Report Posted April 9, 2011 Replace the oil filter! Either it doesn't have a non-return valve or its broken. I'll bet its fine if you start it up after 5minutes turnoff, but it drains away when turned off for longer. We had that problem, easily fixed with a filter, but I replaced the bearings later on as they were scoured from a year of no-oil starting before we bought the car. Its a dog to do in the car, whip the motor out! Make sure you change the studs in the timing-chain cover for bolts while you're doing it. Quote
Andy43 Posted April 9, 2011 Report Posted April 9, 2011 If had the same problem a while back. There is a blead back valve in the filter that keeps the oil up to the head when the engine is shut down. The valve has shit its self. Put a z68 on it and you should be sweet. The good news is when you remove the old filter oil wont spill every where as it drained into the sump Quote
thcraig87 Posted April 9, 2011 Report Posted April 9, 2011 Agree with the check your filter stuff, but if it didn't do it before and it does now then I you sort of need to find out why. Remember that smaller sized filters will give you a higher oil pressure and may help to build the pressure a little quicker. I had a similar problem with my 4K, don't know if it applies to the 3K though. She would rattle on start up and take up to five seconds for the oil light to go off and then was fine while running. It was the timing chain tensioner, relatively easy fix, all good after that. So it could be that. I think if it was the pump or a blockage then it may go on for longer than the first five to ten seconds and probably give you other problems while driving? Not sure??? Hope it helps. Quote
love ke70 Posted April 9, 2011 Report Posted April 9, 2011 as has been said, most likely a cheap ass filter with no anti drain back valve. but the other thing to do is put an oil pressure gauge on it. i had a motor that would make about 3 psi at idle, and would turn the light out. but not when on a hill. oil pump was shagged in that. even if it is an engine out job, you could do it in a weekend Quote
RA28GT Posted April 12, 2011 Author Report Posted April 12, 2011 Turns out it was just a crappy filter! Bloody easy fix, it was time for a full service and clean out anyway. Just need to get her tuned now. Quote
