3Rzfe Into Ke70 -

Recommended Posts

Gents,

I am shortly going to be acquiring a 2000 model 3RZFE and Hilux 5 speed, that I want to put into my KE70. Now I've had a search, and it has brought up some issues with sump configuration fouling on KE70 crossmember and what not. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this conversion? There's a few things I'd like to know in particular.

- With the sump, there is a bit of info flying around that the USDM delivered Tacoma, which is essentially a Hilux, came with a slightly different sump config. How true is this?

- Does anyone have any pics of a 3RZ sitting in a KE70 bay?

- I'd like to leave the firewall intact. I know I won't be able to sit the motor back further, but that isnt a huge issue for me. I've read it is a rather tall motor, any issues with bonnet closure?

- Any factory tail shafts mix and match to suit?

- Diff is obviously going to be upgraded. Anyone have any suggestions?

- Any issues with steering rack clearance?

I know there is a few other 3RZ conversion threads, but I will be documenting the conversion quite closely so that others have a point of reference if they are wanting to go down the same road.

Cheers,

Shazza

Hi Rob,

Cheers for the info mate. Hilux diff seems the logical way to go, and will make knocking up a tail shaft easier. I've also heard there is a decent availability for LSD centres for a Lux diff. How did you go about the diff in your mates rolla?

Is there a specific year model that I should look for? Any variant stronger then another?

Cheers,

Shazza

For those that aren't aware, the 3RZFE is a 2.7L fuel injected 4 cylinder, that makes around 142hp @ 5000rpm and 217nm torque in stock form.. It has a 95 bore x 95 stroke, and runs a 9.5:1 compression ratio from the factory, which is perfect for low boost applications. A company in America (LCEngineering) does complete kits to rebuild these motors, as well as factory TRD supercharger kits with a choice of different pulleys.

I will be getting the motor and a hilux 5 speed off a mate in the coming weeks, and then I will be slowly acquiring the other parts to make the conversion happen. As the hilux runs a hydraulic clutch, and the KE70 is cable operated, a AE71 pedal box will be a must, along with a much larger clutch master cylinder and brake booster. I already have ventilated rotors on the front, with massive Toyota Tarago brakes, so the suspension and brakes are already done. Luckily, I have a AE71 crossmember already out of the car, so I can fab up some custom engine mounts to where I think it should be sitting.

The sump is an issue with the conversion from what i've read, as most Hiluxes run rear sump setups, which does not suit the AE/KE crossmember, so I'm trying to source a Toyota Tacoma (USDM Hilux 4x2) sump, which apparently has a more center/front sump due to it not being AWD. LCEngineering in USA make a custom dry sump setup, but goes for over $3k, which I am not keen on doing at the moment. I think a cut and shut on the sump should do it, as the oil pickup is at the front of the sump if i recall correctly.

The Hilux 5 speed apparently fits in with relative ease, however, after looking at the dimensions of the box compared with the body of the Rolla, I think the gearbox tunnel may require a bit of massaging to fit. Gearbox X member will be fabbed to suit. (Anyone have any input on this at all?)

Tailshaft will have to be a custom one. The hilux one will be too long I'd imagine, so will need to be cut down to fit.

This brings me to the diff. I'm still unsure of what to do here, but I've been reading that there is a few people who are running Hilux diffs, and rightly so, as they are strong as. I just need to find out whether or not they are using the complete diff, or just the center. If it is the whole diff, do I simply need to drop the diff out of the KE70, cut the diff mounts off both diffs, and weld/reinforce the KE70 mounts into the Hilux diff, then send the whole thing away to a diff shop to get the axles cut to length, and upgraded? I will also fit a LSD to the diff while this is happening.

Fuel tank needs one of two things to happen. First option, is to purchase a JDM AE86 EFI tank, that comes with baffles inside the tank to limit surging. The second option is to weld some baffles into my factory tank, or run an external surge tank/lift pump/HP pump seperate.

ECU wiring shouldn't be too hard. I'm actually considering biting the bullet, and running a full aftermarket from the get go, as to limit the amount of wiring in the engine bay.

Alot of research to go, but all is looking good for the moment.

Cheers,

Shazza

Although I'm against cut and shutting sumps which are designed to serve their purpose, unless she wont be lifting the wheels off the ground, be interesting to see how she turns out,

Have you thought about reversing the crossmember?

As for the diff, complete the conversion with hilux diff and shortened tailshaft, use top links and remove the torque tube

Hi mate,

I'm not a fan of cutting and shutting either, but as long as the oil pickup is in the correct spot, then it shouldn't cause too many issues.

Can't say reversing the crossmember crossed my mind. Would it simply just bolt back up? Surely there would be additional work needed for the steering rack to mount? Do you have a link of an example of some sort?

With the diff, use the WHOLE diff? Whats the PCD on a hilux rear?

Cheers,

Shazza

we used a diff out of a 97 model and got a 2005 4x4 lsd center hilux has the same stud pattern as ford 5x115mm correct me if I'm wrong, we got the diff shortened used hoppers stopper rear brake kit and used the corolla pattern 4x114.3,

I run a shortened LN series hilux diff back to 4 stud, they have large drums in standard 5x114.3,

Reversing only crossed my mind as datsun conversions do this, I know most of the sumps sit forward tho, I admit I'm not up to speed with the 70's,

Idea, reversed crossmember, sit the rack and pinion up front would need suitable spindles, say gemini, as hoppers make a kit to suit?

I know its alot of work, but some food for thought

I only know of two cars that have this motor in a KE10 and a KE36 but did not look all too close at how it got in their

  • 2 years later...

So has anyone actually achieved a 3RZ swap and is it legal in any states? Looks like this has a lot of potential but so many unfinished threads :(

Would love to see one in the flesh or know how it goes,

Jes

I'm currently putting a 2rz into an ae86, I bought the front sump from the USA, part number 12101-75041. You also need the oil pickup and dipstick to suit, I bought them as well but the numbers are around....somewhere.

you still have to cut a section out of the underside of the sump but no biggy really.

and space the crossmember down 20mm

From memory its gvm x 4 for NA, or gvm x 2.5 for turbo. If your gvm is 950 like most ke70, then you can have up to a 3.8 litre NA, or a 2375cc turbo build. What I like about my 2azfe conversion is the fact it comes in 7ccs or so under the turbo limit and its capable of 550hp and 500ft lbs if its set up like the hasselgren motors they make for taka aono. However I have no current plans to boost it.

I could be wrong they change it all the time, and its always best to read it for yourself.
