carbonboy Posted October 1, 2013 Author Report Posted October 1, 2013 looking good! I want that bucket for my garage! :D Cheers man, the things you find just laying around. ;) You cheated and bought new ones didn't you!! How long until you assemble the bottom end? I'll take that as a yes, they're clean enough. :) The crank's going in this evening & clearances checked, once that's done I'm going to hit a bit of a wall until I can afford piston rings. Got the 6:30am don't-come-in-today call this morning, work's still quiet so just doing what I can. Quote

How much glad wrap do you have? You'd be suprized how much fine dust will get into an open clean block. Quote
carbonboy Posted October 1, 2013 Author Report Posted October 1, 2013 Yep, they have a WD-40 coating for now to stop rust forming on the conrods until the time comes that I install them. I have plenty of glad wrap, happy you mentioned it as it makes me feel less paranoid! :laff: Quote
carbonboy Posted October 2, 2013 Author Report Posted October 2, 2013 What do you need when putting in crankshaft bearings & are also what I forgot to clean? Main bearing caps. Before & after shots. Quote
carbonboy Posted October 13, 2013 Author Report Posted October 13, 2013 New core plugs in, happy-hammer-fun-times. Good news, all I need is a set of standard-size piston rings, no special-sized jobbies. Win! The gap measurements are from the existing rings, so allowing for any wear a fresh set should see me by. Suppressing the urge to "bugger the measurements & just slap it together" is harder than I expected, but f*ck it, I only want to have to do this once. Quote
67Rolla-Ken Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 Damn, she's looking like new! Quote
azza91 Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 top job mate, it looks like new again. Quote
Sznaps Posted October 14, 2013 Report Posted October 14, 2013 ouuu yeah. Bring this beauty back to life man! Quote
carbonboy Posted October 14, 2013 Author Report Posted October 14, 2013 Cheers guys, I appreciate the comments as it means I'm heading in the right direction! I feel kinda bad re-using the rods/pistons but since new ones add too much to the build cost & I'm not running stupidly high compression/boost, they will suffice. New rings arrive tomorrow, for a $10 difference between a set of cast & chrome rings, chrome please! Quote
carbonboy Posted October 15, 2013 Author Report Posted October 15, 2013 Yay! Now I can get into the really fun part! See you all in a few days. Quote
carbonboy Posted October 21, 2013 Author Report Posted October 21, 2013 (edited) Haven't gotten as far as I'd like to have, but all is good so far. Pistons have rings on them & side clearances are perfect. This obviously came after checking the end gaps. Mains in, ready to check oil clearances. Edited October 21, 2013 by carbonboy Quote
carbonboy Posted November 4, 2013 Author Report Posted November 4, 2013 Well, today was fun! Kinda. Main bearing oil clearance check was going well. Stupid clumsy me got careless removing the main caps after 'squishing' the Plastigauge, gouged up a bearing shell nicely on the crank. Lots of swearing, followed by phone calls to my engine machinist to discover he's closed today. Oh well, skip the middle-man, called Precision Bearings Head Office which is about an hours drive to the other side of the city for me, they have the ones I need in stock so off we go! Got home, only to realise that I had forgotten thrust washers....it's okay, I asked my local Repco to order me some yesterday & they were meant to call me back... Called the guy I spoke to previously: Repco - "Nah, we're still waiting on a price" Me - "I can tell you the price, I'm asking you if you have ordered them like I asked you to this time yesterday?" Repco - "No need to get ups....." Me - "HAVE YOU ORDERED THE F@&KING THINGS OR NOT?!?!" Repco - "Uh, no... Me - *Hangs Up* So I drove ANOTHER two-hour round trip to the other side of the city for new thrust washers from Precision. $8.50 as opposed to the $60 inc freight charge Repco were going to slug me. [end] /rant Oil clearances also checked out A-Okay on the new, new bearings (as did crankshaft end-play) so this is where it's at at the moment. Quote
carbonboy Posted November 5, 2013 Author Report Posted November 5, 2013 I wanted to save money as much as possible on this build & intended to reuse the standard oil-pump. Then I looked at what I'd have to do to clean it, then thought about the consequences of pump failure. Yeah, no. Had I been a bit more organised, I could've spent a lot less time travelling the Monash Freeway this long-weekend... On the bright side, I have a brand new 4A-GE 20v ST oil pump that has been ported/high-flowed from Sam at SQ Engineering, who also hooked me up with a brand new OEM rear-main oil seal. All for around half of what Toyota themselves would want for a standard 16v oil pump, for the price I'd be bloody stupid not to! SQ are also a sponsor of TCCAV, so I got a little discount too! :) Quote
carbonboy Posted November 9, 2013 Author Report Posted November 9, 2013 I had to get yet another visa to head across town to get, wait for it, a single gasket. The one for the rear-main oil-seal retainer/housing. The one I thought I had but didn't. Then a bolt broke... Drill & rotate out. Fixed! Dug this little gizmo out of the cupboard, an unknown manufacturer crankshaft under-drive pulley. Sitting inside a standard crank pulley gives an idea of the diameter difference. Should help the alternator & water pump live long, healthy lives. Seeing as I will be running neither Air-Conditioning or Power-Steering, only need the one thanks. Quote
