  1. Streeter. Pretty happy with him so far actually. I've been pretty specific about what I wanted and he's communicated well. He keeps to the point, but keeps you informed every step of the way.
  2. So my first try and shipping things from Japan didn't quite turn out as well as hoped. The back muffler on the exhaust is flogged. Externally it looked good, internally it's rusted out and all the packing has fallen in, so it's useless. Not too big a deal, I'll grab another muffler and weld it on. I was hoping it was going to be a bolt on and go job, but it isn't to bed. That, and the throttle cable isn't for an AE86. Who knows what it's for, but the bolt spacing is wrong, as is the length. Shifter boot is good though! It's a bit irrelevant at the moment anyway, my spare time has just vanished with the second job. I hope that will calm down for a moment around the middle of next week, so I might get a little bit of time. I picked up a double flare tool, so I should be able to sort out the fuel lines at least.
  3. Love it. I'd imagine she's nice and light too!
  4. I've lost a lot of momentum since getting the motor and box in. Life is getting in the way. I shall persist. Last night I managed to get a session in. The motor wasn't actually bolted in, and the gearbox was held up by a jack, so I rectified that. Everything is bolted in, easy enough. I also picked up a new clutch slave, so I gave that some paint just to help with longevity and also painted the fuel rail while I was there. I'm at the point where I really need to decide on what I'm going to do with the fuel system, so after getting the fuel rail on I'll look at that. It will be easier to sort out that with the manifold off than on. I also need to sort out the earths for the block. Gearbox is done, but head and block need doing. Easy enough, just need to pick the spots and give them a buff so there is good contact. I also picked up a silicone radiator hose set. Plus, I have parts on the way from Japan! Picked up a HKS Legal cat back exhaust for cheap, plus a new shifter boot (the small one right above the ball and socket) and an AE86 throttle cable. So there aren't many pices of the puzzle left, just have to put it together. The to do list looks like this: Clean injectors up, new o rings and install fuel rail. Work out what I'm going to do with the fuel lines and filter Engine and head earths Radiator mounts and install hoses Then onto getting it wired up and fired up!
  5. I have a JDM loom ☺ Also have an AE82 loom, but it won't fit as nicely. I just need to work out the chassis connections. Which engine stickers? I need one for the top belt cover.
  6. My helper. He's actually more stoked about the engine crane than the engine.... It's new home. It went in reasonably well, considering I was doing it myself. I had to take the manifold off which was a little annoying, as I ended up trashing one of the gaskets, so that will have to be re done. Otherwise it's all good. Misses needed the car, so I didn't get much more done. Had to get the engine crane back. So there's a fair list, bolt in the gearbox mount. Re do the gasket, wiring, fuel, etc. etc. etc! Still, it's a milestone, I'm stoked :D
  7. There's a dude on the E Chassis sales FB group who has an dash the right colour. It looks uncracked from the photo, but you'd have to check. Might be worth chasing up. Can give you more details if you're keen.
  8. Pretty sure I have a head gasket you can have if you want it.
  9. Oh now that is going to be handy for me. Thanks altezza :D
  10. Another week off! But I did a bit last night. Proportioning valve is cleaned up an in. After much head scratching I managed to work out how to hook up the brakes too. Must remember to take more photos when pulling things apart. The lines are in though. They look terrible, but we'll worry about that later. Tie rods are also in. They got a scrub, but no paint. I didn't have the key handy, so I still need to unlock the car so I can do a basic alignment. Sway bar is also fixed in. I need to loop around that lot of work with the torque wrench to double check things, then fill it with some brake fluid and bleed it. Quick alignment and then back on it's wheels! It's only been a few years. Then on to putting in a 4AGE...
  11. Bugger about the water temp sender, I think it's the only part that can't be sourced isn't it?? I saw whispers of someone producing an aftermarket one somewhere, but I don't know how far off that is. Good luck with the wiring. That's not far off for me :)
  12. Week off :( Sort of have a second job this week, so no time for anything. Barely had time to change the flat on my MTB before riding this morning. It's getting darker too, so I need to sort out lights so I can keep riding. I did look at it though. Still really happy with how the motor has scrubbed up. To do list is still: Paint and clean proportioning valve Paint and clean tie rods Fix one end of the sway bar Reinstall the brake lines and get the brakes going. Really tempted to do new lines, but I intend to go to a dual MC setup at some stage so I might just live with it for now. Hoping next week will be better.
  13. Right, cam covers are all done up properly. Engine mount is on and starter has been finished off. Engine lifting hooks are also on. Had a real job finding the engine mount bolts. I've got some in there now but I'm not 100% sure they're the right ones for the job, so I may end up hunting down something else for those. They'll do to get the motor in though. So I've shuffled the motor out of the way and now it's time to prep the car! So I need to put tie rods back in, fix one side of the say bar and paint and install the proportioning valve and then brake lines. There's a bit to do, I have to convert the car back from being a bench in the shed! Motor hiding in it's corner. Hole it has to fill :)
  14. Oh I've often thought about rallying up one of those. But you're right, too good to rally, and spares these days? Hah!
  15. The tap turned up, ran it through the holes. Things didn't improve. Damn! How have I managed to wreck the donor and remove engine mounts from a complete AE86 4AGE and not have the right mounting bolts?? They're somewhere, I'm going to have to go digging.
  16. Pop up some photos, it may help. From your description it sounds like the one purchased is for big port 4AGE's. I have two of these (AE86 and AE82) and both have 4 point top rotors and 3 pin yellow plugs. I don't believe they will interchange.
  17. I'm so over it! Put all the sensors back in the manifold and bolted up the throttle body. The water bypass turned up so the top water outlet is now properly fitted too. All hoses are on that side and it's all pretty ready to go. I also painted the manifold support and the water and alternator pulleys so that's on and looking good. Dipstick tube is painted and in. It's a FWD dipstick which is longer. I think it should work well but it will be close to the top hose, so we'll see how well it works in practise. The starter is half painted too. Next, finish painting the starter, paint the fuel rail and clean the injectors. Thinking about it, I won't put the rail on just yet, I might wait until it's in the car as I don't want to have the loom flopping about when I'm putting it in. The injector plugs seem pretty brittle, so I don't want to take them off unless I have to. Also paint the engine lift hooks, and I need to put some sealant by the cam seals and properly install the cam covers. Hopefully my tap will show up so I can sort out the LHS engine mount too. Then on to the car. Brake lines back in and finish re assembling the front suspension. Oh, and paint the gearbox cross member. This thing is getting dangerously close to being put in a car! It'll be a milestone, but there's still a daunting amount to do after that: Fit surge tank and lines Fit raditor and heater (needs a bit of fab work to mount the radiator) Fit the ECU and loom, and work out how to get all the sensors of a JDM AE86 loom to work with the KE70 dash Fix the diff (it leaks) Install a bulkhead where the back seat was Put the dash back together I'm mad. No photo this time, it looks much like last time anyway, just picture slightly nicer looking pulleys :)
  18. Had a few days off, it was my birthday so had a long weekend away with the family by the beach. It was really good, but no progress. Back into it tonight. Throttle body is done but needs mounting. Top water outlet done, also needs mounting. Cam covers nearly done, just need to do the detailing. New gaskets on but they aren't properly torqued and I suspect I need gasket goo by the cam seals. Haven't checked the manual yet. Mocked up the leads, must say I'm happy :) Next up. Do the pulleys, mount the throttle body and the cold start injector and get into the fuel rail and starter. Oh, my bottoming tap came in. I ordered the wrong size. What a twat, so the left side mounts still need finishing off.
  19. You know what, I painted the alternator last night and I was looking at the plug, pondering whether I have that same plug anywhere. I suspect I left its mate in the donor car which is no longer with me. I'll double check, but I don't specifically remember getting it, I'll let you know how I go! So last night I mounted up the TVIS plate and manifold. I wasn't having much luck finding the gasket for the heater lines so I ended up making one with some cardboard packaging and a ball peen hammer. Hopefully it holds up :) I also painted the alternator as mentioned. I still need to paint the pulley on that one before I bolt it on. Next is the alternator and water pump pully, and the manifold stay. I'll also clean up the injectors and fuel rail and get that on. Then that side of the engine is pretty much done. Oh, except for the water outlet on the head. I'm still waiting on the bypass pipe which has been ordered. Not a big job though. I also need to clean and paint the throttle body which looks like it might be finicky. Plus the cam covers. It's time to do them, they're ruining the look of the rest of the motor. Can wait to get this thing in!
  20. More wheeling, more painting. Manifold and TVIS plates painted. Wanted to mount them up, but I really want to sort out the water gear first and access becomes more restricted as these things get mounted. I put on all the engine mounts finally, only to find that my bolts are too long on the passengers side. I'm not sure if they're just too long, or the wholes are gunked up. I've ordered a bottoming tap, so I'll see how we go with that. Started cleaning the alternator for some paint too. Next, paint alternator. Change the vacuum can on the TVIS, the one on there now has a rattle. Paint the starter and the throttle body. Then remount everything on the manifold. Hopefully by the time we get to that I've sorted out the water pipes. And, piccies! I did some mucking around and mounted the exhaust too, just 'cause I could. It's coming together. I'm starting to question my sanity.
  21. Didn't get anything done last night. The other toy (mountain bike) needed a new tube, some spoke tightening and a shock swapped. I wanted to ride this morning so that took priority. I did fondle the motor a little bit though ;) I pulled out the TVIS plate and intake manifold so see how that all fit up. I notice that the plug on the TVIS valve for a JDM motor is different to ADM. That's OK, I'm hoping to use the JDM loom if I can. Also the vacuum damper is rattly on the JDM plate, so I'll have to swap it when I'm cleaning everything up. Oh, and I put the TRD leads on just 'cause, you know, purdy.
  22. Frustrating night last night. First up, did all the timing gear, so the belt is on, lower cover and balancer. That went well and everything slotted together nicely. Then onto the water gear. All painted. Mounted the outlet on the back of the head, no worries. Tried to mount the pipes that run along the block and worked out that my gasket kit must be for front wheel drive and doesn't have the gasket for the back of the water pump. Booo! Cleaned up the pipe that goes from the back of the water pump to the top water outlet to the radiator and I don't have the O rings to fix that either! Grrrrr So that stopped me. I wanted to finish off the water system but I need parts. I'll sort that out and move onto other things. I probably should get to actually putting on the engine mounts. I've been procrastinating on that job for some reason. Also, still need to clean up the alternator, starter and manifolds. We'll hit that next.
  23. I'll leave it in for the moment I think. Given everything is still stock I'll trust that the Toyota engineers knew what they were doing. A healthier torque curve will be helpful with the cars use. Nothing new to report with the car. My eldest started kindy and the youngest a new child care so the last few days have been spastics with running around picking up and dropping off kids. Reckon I'll have an update late tomorrow night...
