Subaru_Kid's Ae82 Tin Can - Parting Out
TOMsGPTurbo replied to Subaru_kid's topic in Rollaclub Rides
I personally like the black mags, but that's just me! Isn't it amazing what a bit of a freshen up can do to a car?! Tho I have never changed gearbox oil before - what's the recommended intervals for that? Show us the surprise already -
LOL !!! lately I've come close to ragging the car apart everytime I work on it lol :) I've spent this morning replacing sensors and cleaning up wiring and trying to work out what stuff is where it goes, if you know what the below listed stuff could be please let me know. EDIT - Updated with findings Photo 1 - Boost control switch, I think that brown one needs to be plumbed out somehow, got to work that out now.. Photo 2 - Idle up valve Photo 3 - Relay for idle up valve - not used tho Photo 4 - Relay wire goes into that little white plug - need to work out what that is now. Photo 5 - I re-wired this plug as it was broken, what's it do? Photo 6 - Coolant temp sensor (green) - HVAC to the left of green, coolant temp sensor to dash before green plug. Photo 7 - HVAC plug Photo 8 - Coolant temp sensor - now changed to a 4EFTE item Photo 9 - No idea what this is

Interesting, your housemate is going down the supercharger route, how come? and what's it going into?
-
Some pics from the weekend - working on the parts car. Engine was lowered carefully down and the front of the car lifted up and then the engine pulled out. Work bench - all the tools need to remove an engine, it actually came out really easily with nearly no fuss.
-
I saw an awesome ke70 last friday at sunnybank shopping centre - clean white one sounded like it had a very angry engine!! Made me want one too now. Anyhow a mate and me pulled the engine out of the parts car, i have it up for sale at the moment but I'm thinking of pulling it down and building a 5EFTE - That way my car will be a 1.5ltr again.
-
Wise words!... there is nothing like the feeling of working on your own car though, granted that I have had a bit of help, but nearly every time I work on the car I learn something new. I'm even working on my 04 Holden Astra lately, want to hear bad luck, I struck a pot hole at night and buckled the rim, and stuffed some suspension component - banging sounds, feels like a sway bar, major service is way over due, I have coolant leak I can't' pin, thermostat is sticking causing the car to over heat. I've already replaced broken ecu, numerous water pumps, one shock, rear discs, coil pack, I finally paid my rego so now to save up to fix it again. It doesn't stop!!! :| Anyhow enough whinging, I found some decent reference material on 4EFTE plugs and what they plug upto, time to get busy.

I am, and I'm not, I'm basically doing everything the hard-way, this could be demonstrated when instead of using the engine out of the parts car and working loom, I took the loom out and hacked it up, and pulled bits off the working engine, all due to not understanding how the car was wired up in the first place. But in hindsight now I know it would have been better to do a straight swap. So, I'm learning on the go, so I can't say is it a bad thing but not a good thing? 3rd point - 1300 words to go, 10pm, - my eyes are burning.. :blinks: ... got to keep on writing! :rolls: Thanks man, I can't wait until rego! I put the top mount back on and the Intercooler let go because I was lazy and didn't put any clamps on the piping, so the pressure blew it off, Why do I even post my fail moments on here lol  Anyhow, back to it!

Did you warp the head or just blow the gasket? What did it blow again? over reving? :( -
Anyone know why a battery wouldn't be holding charge, or failling to recharge on jumpers? I had the new battery connected to jumpers to my Astra and had the Astra going, when I went to fire up the Rolla, it didn't start up, just sucked alot of power from the Astra. **EDIT** - Due to a/c being left on in the Astra and the car was over-heated so they aux fan was kicking in I finally got the battery going on, I left the car running for a while, when I came back to it it was idling a little high, 1250rpm, and missing every so often, I remember adjusting the air/fuel mixture in the past and thought this might have some kind of barring on it, so I gave the screw a half turn which in turn made the exhaust smoke up bad! blue smoke everywhere! I turned it back down and the revs fell but far, I turned it all the way and half a turn open and revs remain the same. I'm getting the feeling I shouldn't be touching things I don't really know where they should be set. I had feeling that the smoke might be from the intercooler not plugged up, so I plugged it up and it made little difference. I gave it a good rev and the intercooler litrally flew off. Lessions learnt from today's experience: 1, If you don't know what it does, don't touch it. 2, Why mess with new stuff when the old stuff isn't fixed yet  3, Why mess with the car when my university assignment isn't done yet? :no2:

Thanks man, I'm back doing full time uni and working full time now, actually looking for a job upgrade too. Thanks man, yeh I can't wait too, once the brake pressure is sorted I'll be able to drive it ... which is exactly what it needs, a good long drive to expose any hidden issues which it may have developed.

Justin, best post ever, I really happy it turned out well, what engine are you now running? I think I completely missed that post lol. Also chuck up a vid! -
Hey Andrew, sorry to see you moving down before we go for a cruise with the EL's. :( I know how it feels been away from car action too - I still haven't pulled that speedo cable out for you, but I haven't forgoten! It's still on my things to get to list. One good thing about Victoria is the amount tracks you have access to, and also some nice drives, ie great ocean road.

i've been crazy busy lately with hardly any time for the car, ..currently applying to keep my job, talking to builders / renovators on the best course for house repairs to be able to legally rent our house, cleaning and maintaining two houses and also trying to keep my uni grades stable after a lot of crap went down forcing me to pull out of uni, and working full time, lately I've been way to tired to do anything on the car, ... last thing was the EL31 thermo fan on the EP82 radiator, I actuallyed fired it up and drove it to the tap (gave me an exuse for a drive hehe... even if it was only a couple meters). One thing I've noticed is that the brakes don't come on until my foot is planted to the floor.... and even then they'll come slowly on..

Thanks for the tips, wish I knew more about gearboxes to be able to help :( How does you pattern work, isn't it just normal 5sp? with reverse under 5th? What's a mechanical LSD?
-
Justin do u think carby cleaner or strip down?
-
I'm thinking that the oil is clogging up the intake hence choking it to clear the oil to let the air in
-
How much oil should be in a intake manifold? I put my finger in it and came out very oily
-
Nice job looks clean
-
Hey Rob, why shorten the dash?
-
Also how busy are you lately? You might have a riding partner soon, I'm looking at those qride courses.
-
Hey Trev, maxi is starting up without needing to be choked only when warm tho any ideas

I learn't the hard way too bro, if you want it right, do it your self, you're the only one accountable for it and you get that warm fuzzy feeling. Amazing how if you kick up a stink it can all happen in a couple of hours.
