The choke cable next to the cigarette lighter & instrument cluster are correct, the steering wheel is not a recent addition however. No one picking the third one yet means I did a good job of it. Maiden voyage is this afternoon, can't wait! Loki seems excited too, he slept in it last night.- 539 replies

Aside from the obvious lack of seats, I think you need a keen eye to spot the three major changes. Subtle is good. Getting there, kinda warm today. Dodgy bonnet panel-beating is dodgy, but since Hanging Rock is this Sunday...it'll do.- 539 replies

Note to self: The big fat red & black wire that appeared to not be a part of a circuit, WAS. Have lights etc again. Fixed the choke so it operates smoothly, re-positioned the throttle return spring & while I was in a productive mood, put one of these together: http://www.toymods.o...-booster-2.html I made the external version, have yet to test to see if it works as when I went to crank the engine, flat battery. Found why it's draining, front passenger door light switch didn't turn lights off when closed, didn't notice due to daylight. Fixed that. Finally worked out where the hell to mount the MSD, I had the perfect spot then it dawned on me that it may not be a fan of being so close to the heater core. Made a mounting bracket (still needs the corners rounded & edges smoothed, but it fits) from bits laying around, with any luck the rest of the interior will be in soon, then on goes the front end.- 539 replies

I may have gotten a bit enthusiastic when removing some of the wiring, I no longer have power for my instrument cluster lights, park-lights or head-lights. So rather than be putting my interior back in & going for a drive, I'm pulling apart the wiring loom trying to find where I've stuffed up. Very frustrating.- 539 replies

This thread is definitely worth the read, I especially like how you cut through the crap & get to the point when modifying your car. Great work so far, keep it up! A nice mix of go-faster-handle-better & look-nice, one of a handful of xE7x's that makes me really want one again (for whatever that is worth).

No more flattened vacuum lines, no more sticky throttle (standard spring needs some help) & no more electronic choke. You gotta give to get as they say... Might have also managed to score myself a cheap un-required laptop for on-the-fly tuning, which will be most helpful even afterwards i.e if I have to run lower octane fuel for some reason, I can knock a few degrees of timing advance off. Now that what I refer to as the hard part is past, I'm actually really enjoying this part, the refining process. Having said that, I am anticipating a certain amount of frustration. :)- 539 replies

It sounds as good as I'd hoped at the engine end, the exhaust I was uncertain what it would sound like. Doesn't have the drone or the rasp I thought it would, kinda motorbike crossed with a boxer engine. :blinks: I found my stuff-up on that one, it was set to 4 cylinder but instead of the 4 tooth trigger in the distributor, I had connected it to the 24 tooth trigger. This was because initially the 4 tooth didn't give me a signal, when the rotor/pickup clearance is 0.7mm instead of the 0.2 - 0.4mm it's meant to be, that'll do it. Fixed the clearance, have signal! So in effect the MSD was receiving 6-times the number of triggers it needed, no wonder my RPM was out of whack! All that work is completely & utterly worth it azza, SO FREAKIN HAPPY! Things To Do: - Test connect factory tachometer to the coil, I'd hoped it would work with the MSD signal but not quite, it jumps around under 1,000 at idle, then when revved goes straight to 0. The tachometer adapter is about $120, would prefer to not have buy that, on the bright side the MSD signal works to trigger the LPG switch for the fuel pump, so that's a win. - Tweak carburetor air/fuel/idle mixtures, going to have to just wing it until an A/F gauge arrives. - Replace vacuum-lines from intake to distribution-block, they get sucked shut at idle (bad choice of hose on my part). - Run idle adjustment cable into cabin. - Setup some form of choke cable/lever & run into cabin (Kawasaki refers to this as the 'Starter Enricher', I'm just happy to know what those 4 little plunger-things on the carburetors do). - Re-install dash/interior/front end. - Tweak ignition map. - Enclose air filters. - Test the MSD's Burnout & Launch functions.....anyone up for a Calder Park Friday night off-street drag racing session in late February?- 539 replies

Cheers mate! :y: It did my head in too, until I stumbled across a thread on the MSD support forums that had a pretty picture. The numbers on the left (Y-axis) of the graph are the number of degrees the MSD is retarding the timing from maximum advance (seems backwards to me too, but 'Murica). In this case max-advance (0 on the graph) is 28 degrees BTDC, at idle the MSD is retarding that 15 degrees, so idle timing is 13 degrees BTDC. As the RPM rises, the amount of retard reduces. Finding the happy mix of timing & fuel with a wideband is going to be fun. I do actually mean fun, as far as I see it the hard part is done, now it's just fine tuning. :)- 539 replies

Thanks mate, not sure if it completely fits the description of running. There's a whole lot of checks & tuning from here, it'll 'idle', that's it. Any throttle & it's backfire city. Making a brace to hold the injector port plugs in, checking fuel supply & the distributor 4-tooth pickup clearances, might also adjust the air-fuel screws in the carburetors after I check the plugs to see if rich/lean. I'm guessing lean. On the bright side, the noise from the muffler doesn't seem so bad so far & the induction noise leading up to the backfire is quite nice.- 539 replies

Dramas. Had a 1psi fuel pressure reading on the gauge, now at 0 despite what adjustment I make to it, yet engine still idles. Got things to the point where it would idle & I could read the timing, sitting at 15 degrees BTDC. At what RPM, I have NFI, factory tachometer is not functioning & according to the MSD, the idle RPM is at about 4,500. Yep, somethings not right there, I'm no expert but it sounded like around 1,000 RPM to me. Still backfires & spits out injector port plugs every time I apply throttle, so far the #4 cylinder plug is the only one to remain put. I'm buggered so I'm done for today, made some progress so frustration can remain at bay for now. :)- 539 replies

IT LIVES. (kinda) ***WARNING*** The following video is recommended for mature audiences, it contains Coarse Language & Excessive School-Girl-Like giggling. Viewer discretion is advised. Make fun of my giggling, go for it, I really don't care, I'll laugh with you right now! After my lunch-break (it's 35-ish degrees here at the moment) I'll tweak the timing & get back to you all. :)- 539 replies

I'll vouch for this, tried it once, silicone has a knack for finding the exact hole to get stuck in to give you grief!

While both batteries were charging yesterday afternoon, I went over all my wiring to try & work out why for a short time I had an RPM signal when cranking & then it vanished. Got all the way back to the rubber plug that goes inside the distributor body without finding any problems, so I cut the rubber plug open. Inside this where the two negative wires splice together as one, the join was hanging together by maybe 2 or 3 strands of wire. Could have something to do with things! :hmm: Anywho, I repaired that & figured that since I wasn't going to be able to work on it any further, I'd better finish something else off. I haven't forgotten about The Throwout: Part 3, new engine must be running before I complete that trilogy. Here is Part 2 of Blue Things Heart Transplant (slightly shorter than I anticipated):- 539 replies

Nope, not through lack of trying, drained the battery trying, it's on charge again. Couldn't work out why it wasn't starting, so checked fuel - all good, air - plenty, spark - ..... Did the MSD check-coil procedure, have spark. I then noticed that I had connected the pickup wires to the distributor wrong, corrected that & still nothing. Changed the MSD pickup settings from Hall to ECU...hello, we have an RPM signal when cranking. :) Using a timing light I couldn't see the crank pulley notch while cranking but at least it flashed. Playing with adjusting the distributor rotor shaft to advance/retard timing, ran out of battery power again. :(- 539 replies

Only a flat battery not good, it had enough to spin the engine with no compression, but as soon as it needed some 'oomph', it had nuthin'. Take 2 in the daylight when the battery has some more electrons. My bystanders with the fire extinguisher told me I had no bad sounding noises when it was briefly cranking, so that's a good sign.- 539 replies

MAP sensor wired in & working, hidden under the intake. Takes its feed from the vacuum distribution block, with a line for the pollution gear vacuum switch tee'd in. The world works in funny ways, originally put there for lolz, differences in muffler-flange offsets meant I actually had no choice. Completed wiring is completed. Then this happened.- 539 replies

Good to hear the Innovate item has some endorsement! :) The thing that took me the longest to work out was the graph isn't showing/controlling timing advance from 0 TDC, it's showing/controlling the degrees of timing retard from maximum advance. So if I lock the distributor at 10 degrees BTDC, I can only retard it from there, so I lock it at maximum advance (which is rotating the rotor shaft clockwise one tooth to get 27.69lotsofnumbers degrees advance) then the MSD retards it from that. So all those numbers are subtracted from 28 (shown on the graph as 0) to give the degrees BTDC, kinda makes sense? :hmm: Phone calls welcome, I've bugged enough people along my way here!- 539 replies

Bugger it, a MAP sensor's going in, matching up the wiring is easy in this case. Ignition Curve Version 1.1, feeling a little more optimistic about this one.- 539 replies

WMMH - I don't get my actual paper-frame-immediately-Certificate until the graduation ceremony in mid-February, but this is making me pretty damn happy right now. :) Oh, the extra 5 days it took me were due to time off work on WorkCover. :P

Cheers mate, I'll let you in on a little secret: It terrifies the hell out of me too! Had a break yesterday from working on it, had zero motivation so I took the hint & caught up on some sleep. I'm not back at work full-time until the first week of February (which sucks), but as soon as I can afford it, a wideband air/fuel ratio gauge is on the shopping list. This be the one on the cards: http://www.innovatem...oducts/MTXL.php . It sounds a little silly at first, but I want to spend as little time on a dyno as possible, because dyno time costs money, the more basic stuff I can do beforehand the better. :) Edit: I worked out what that nagging feeling was, I was going to lock the distributor at 10 degrees BTDC to get it running. What I need to do is turn the distributor to what will be maximum (around 28 degrees BTDC) advance & then program the curve to retard the timing from that, I was approaching it kinda arse-backwards. I love it when things finally 'click'.- 539 replies

All the things need to be put back together, but it functions. My wiring checked out okay, the fuel pump priming itself scared the crap out of me but the only leak I've discovered so far was a slight coolant weep on on of the heater hoses. Fixed by tightening the hose clamp properly. Going to wrap the chrome fuel pressure gauge in black tape, it sticks out too much. Tomorrow it's plug in the MSD & play time, with the aim of being able to turn the thing over by or on this weekend. :)- 539 replies
