Classic Japan 2013 - Sunday 1St December - Como Park, South Yarra
carbonboy replied to carbonboy's topic in VIC / Melbourne
Just a quick bit of news: The Toyota Car Club of Australia is proud to announce that from our recent Classic Japan event, we have raised $4,000 that will be heading to the Fred Hollows Foundation. This money will go towards restoring the sight of 160 people. A massive thankyou must go out to all our sponsors, volunteers & all of you who came along, donated, had a great day & made all of this possible. :2thumbs: -
Thankyou again Colin, both for the congrats & the support throughout the year. :y: DOOOOO IT! The MX5's in Class B need a good reminder to fear Corollas! If I can't beat him next year, someone is going to have to!

The NGK Victorian Motorkhana Championship Presentation Night was held last night, was well attended with many familiar faces. I got just a little bit of a shock when I was one of three people called up to have an award presented to them by Eugene Arocca, the current CEO of CAMS. :blinks: The award in question, my reward for this years efforts, along with a fellow TCCAV member who finished Second in Novice. :) TCCAV finished Second behind Huntingdale Auto Club in the Club Points, which is not too bad considering that at best, we have 6 club members at a VMC Round. They have...more. Despite this, TCCAV members finished 1st & 2nd in Novice Class, 2nd in Ladies Class, 5th in Class A, 2nd in Class B & 1st in Class E. On a TCCAV-related note, our Club Christmas Meeting Presentation Night was on Tuesday night. Where I was lucky enough to be awarded the trophy on the left I get to keep & the perpetual trophy which I do have to give back after 12 months. It was noted that this year, there was actually a close contest for the Theo Wintels Memorial Trophy (Motorkhana Champion). But, it went to Batch for the third year in a row. *sigh* Fine, I won't let him win it four years in a row...

Test run for heat-resistant topcoat, hopefully it works out how I had planned. All stripped back. Primer Topcoat colour. Boring I know but a flashy-coloured engine bay in Blue Thing would just look.....odd, more so than what she already does!- 539 replies

After all the welding I did, the intake flange obviously warped. Quite a bit actually, as testified by my aching arms. Fixed now. It's also covered in heat-resistant primer now.- 539 replies

I have a few of his/your old class-mates in Class A to try to beat next year, if one would stop driving the Pulsar & drive his blue Corolla again it would make things a tad easier. ;) Getting into the Top 5 won't be easy, we'll see how it goes though! :y:

Excellent photos Adam! Also, thankyou for taking a photo of Blue Thing, pretty sure only you & I did. This sounds awesome, so, we'll see it there next year? ;) Thankyou for the kind words Carolyn & thankyou also for coming along! The dirt from Winton only adds to the authenticity as far as I'm concerned, means it's being used rather than sit in a museum or something. Not that that's a bad thing, just better being used for what it was built for IMHO. :) I had another play with MovieMaker & put together a little walk-around of the day. Four hours of car show condensed into just under eleven minutes, if you're game, sit back, relax & enjoy. -

It was great to be able to put a face to a forum name te27, kinda-awkward-but-funny when you're talking to someone & realise which forum username the person you are talking to is (on my behalf). For the record parrot & silverra23, neither of you are getting old, I'm a little younger & I agree. Not that what the car has isn't kinda cool, just a time & a place for things & I think they realised pretty quickly that CJ is neither. ;) Please don't hate me becausenissan, but this was my personal favourite car of the show. A very close second...remove the GT-R badge, put as sedate wheels on it as the brakes allow & noone would really guess there's an RB26 with a decent sized single under the bonnet. A close third. I could keep going, but as has been mentioned, there is a ton of photos that you can find on the Classic Japan Facebook Page, the other 300+ I took can be found here: https://picasaweb.go...feat=directlink Thankyou to the TCCAV organisers/everyone who attended/donated/displayed their vehicle/helped out throughout the day. It's cliched I know but I don't care, without everyone's support this event doesn't happen. If it keeps going at this rate, CJ 2014 will officially blow my mind. I look forward to this. -
Cheers Colin, I did have the benefit of not having a $h1t-hot driver alongside me in Novice Class this year! Looking at the Provisional Results, the fact that I attended 8 Rounds versus 2nd place who attended just 4 Rounds may have had a bit to do with it! ;) *MEH* Go to be in it to win it! Given the guy in the Mini who won Class A this year is pretty handy behind the wheel (a nice guy to boot), it may be a while before I can win anything else. :)

To be able to synchronise the carburetors, or at least be able check & compare how much vacuum each one is pulling. Whether I have the ability to do anything about it is another story. ;) I could be being a bit pedantic, but having enough vacuum for my brake booster is a concern. With this setup, all four intake runners are connected, rather than just the one. I do realise the factory setup has just the one, but I have changed a few things... *shrugs*- 539 replies

Indeed it is, cheers mate, I appreciate the kind words! Just have file the cylinder-head flange flat again then paint it. I found a high-temp silver that I like, closely resembles the colour of a standard aluminium manifold.- 539 replies

Well then, it's been a while between updates! Round 10 didn't happen due to inclement weather conditions, so this is the VMC done & dusted for another year. I have to say, I had an absolute blast this year & am very happy with what I've managed to learn. I'll definitely be back next year for a proper crack at it with a decent engine. To all the event organisers, timekeepers, scrutineers, competitors, helpers & BBQ-cookers, thankyou very much for your efforts this year, your help is very much appreciated! :y:  :y: Now for the *drum-roll please* Provisional Results! Overall I finished Equal 30th out of 34, not particularly high, but equal with an EVO VI & a BMW 323i can't be that bad! In Class A, I finished 7th out of 40, I know it's no podium finish, but for my first year at this it's as good as one! More to the point, I BEAT THE CIVIC!!! In Novice Class, well bugger me sideways if I didn't manage to finish 1st out of 13. Being a nOOb has never felt so damn good.

Spend over $50 on fittings to suit the thread-taps I already have, or spend $10 on a 1/2" UNF tap to suit the fittings I already have? A no-brainer really. :)- 539 replies

On-leash yes, as far as I am aware at least, off-leash I don't believe is permitted. We had a few last year, please don't forget plastic bags to clean up after any number 2's! :) -

For those of you who plan on attending Classic Japan this Sunday at Como Park, please take note! If you were planning to take either of the Citylink Tunnels as part of your route, you may wish to rethink that. Both tunnels will be closed for Maintenance/Re-Surfacing works from 9pm on Saturday the 30th of November until 9am on Sunday the 1st of December. They might finish early, I wouldn't plan on it so best to find another way, see you there! For more information, please check the Citylink website here: http://www.citylink.com.au/News.asp -

A couple of videos showcasing last years event I recommend watching, just to get your fluids going for this Sunday! -
I've got my fingers & toes crossed that it works out that you keep it. Because if you're going to build it how I think you're going to build it, I'd love to see it happen.

Still lots of little things to go, but I've just got to keep knocking them over one by one! I had today set aside for Round 10 of the VMC, but due to a large amount of overnight rain, the Werribee grounds were...less than suitable & the event was cancelled. Bit of a shame, as there's no time in the rest of the year to make up the round, so, that's it for the year. :( I borrowed LittleRedSpirit's idea for making a vacuum distribution block. A great idea I think: cheap (even more so when you have the fittings just laying around), easy to make & with a lick of silver paint, hard to tell that it's PVC at a glance when in an engine bay. It'll cope fine with the pressure (or lack thereof) & provided it's not mounted right next to something very hot, no issue with temperature either. :y:- 539 replies

I'm not sure how I'd go with a 20v, the extra 4 valves & the VVT trickery kinda scares the hell outta me! ;) So close, yet so far! I was aiming to have it in by Classic Japan next Sunday, but it's not going to happen. Could rush things & have it maybe running, but not really worth potentially damaging a freshly rebuilt engine IMHO. Progress pics:- 539 replies

Down to 9 more sleeps before the big day! I'll be honest, I'm nervous. If you can't wait for the day itself to score yourself a Classic Japan t-shirt or lanyard, or are unable to make it on the day but would still like one, we can help you with that! T-shirts & lanyards are For Sale via Ebay, with all funds raised being donated to The Fred Hollows Foundation (http://www.hollows.org.au/) . 4A-GE 16v, ARP head studs, you know the deal. Le Problem. Make it fit. Which was preceded by... Awkward moment: noticing when installing cylinder head & studs, they don't go into the block quite right. Studs out, head off. Awesome moment: found more evidence that you should ALWAYS double check how well you cleaned out threads for bolts. Ran a tap through all threads again & the head studs went in perfectly. Awkward moment: try to turn engine crankshaft to check all is okay & it won't move. Awesome moment: remove cylinder head/pistons to find all is okay there & the bores are fine. Awkward moment: remove crankshaft & find a bearing that doesn't look happy. Not damaged, just looks different to the others. Awesome moment: I have spares...is now back at this stage of assembly & the crank spins effortlessly. Awkward moment: the sun was setting the last time I checked, this photo was taken sometime this morning. At least THAT is out of the way. :D- 539 replies
