Blue Thing: The Daily / Motorkhana Hack (Now Efi)
carbonboy replied to carbonboy's topic in Rollaclub Rides
It's about time I put this in I think, just a standard Twin Cam item, while the exhaust is out & everything... Last wreckers run of 2013 today, grabbed all the little bits I need to GET THIS THING IN. Front swaybar/control arm links, front/rear engine mounts that aren't shagged & an oil cooler line/sump banjo fitting. This time last year I was swapping gearboxes in Blue Thing, kicking it up a notch this year! Have a safe one people.- 539 replies

Fiddling around today making a bracket/protective cover for the electric fuel pump, working out where/how to mount it took a while, there isn't much room under there! It's going to be mounted up between the fuel tank & the rear control arm mounts, would be much easier to mount it near the back of the car on the passenger side but it's higher from the bottom of the fuel tank than I would like & also sticks out like dogs balls. Not what I want. The last major thing that needed doing - complete! Brand new clutch is going on, just an OEM item as the heavy-duty was out of budget but we shall see how it goes. This is a daily-driver after all...*cough*- 539 replies

It's little things like this I tend not to pick up on until I'm actually doing it, single-cam top, twin-cam bottom. Many thanks go to webers4x48 for hooking me up with the inlet/outlet! Slight differences, but enough to be unable to re-use BT's items, single-cam top, twin-cam bottom. Cylinder head inlet near water pump, twin-cam left, single-cam right. Rear outlet. Coolant pipes connected. Intake manifold final test fit.- 539 replies

Chugging my way through the list of little things yet to do, getting there! DIY injector port plugs fitted, all are a snug fit but with a dab of silicone to make sure.- 539 replies

Funnily enough, not really. Shiny takes effort to keep shiny! :P Which is why I'm slightly annoyed I was sent a polished FPR instead of the black one I asked for, however it is about twice the price of the one I paid for so *meh*, I'll deal with it. Stuffed around getting fittings etc today, all sorted. Air filters arrived over a week earlier than quoted, so it's good times all around! When converting from EFI to carburetor, the problem remains of what to do with the injector ports in the cylinder head. You can tap a thread & put a bolt in, but that makes returning the head to EFI at any stage somewhat difficult. You can buy injector port plugs from Techno Toy Tuning (T3), but at $25 for a set of four plus $25 postage from the USA...pass thanks! Some old cylinder head bolts, a raid of the o-ring kit & some fiddling in the shed later.....DIY/tightarse FTW! No more protrusion than a standard fuel injector, perfect!- 539 replies

In all honesty, work out how much you think you'll need for the conversion, then double it. Like Sznaps said, there will be extra costs that pop up that you can't always plan for/factor in & they do add up.

Oh yeah, fun times! But it'll be a good chance to clean up the loom of useless wires/connectors & neaten it all up a bit. Finished off the intake manifold, the same silver as the cam-covers.- 539 replies

Yay, wiring! Pickup fuel pump this afternoon hopefully so I can do connectors etc while it rains on/off here, still little bits to do on the engine itself, but soon!- 539 replies

Many headaches later, a much simpler suggestion was made, one of these: http://www.ebay.com...._uhb=1#shpCntId Which means a much simpler wiring setup & achieves the same goal. My head hurts, bedtime now!- 539 replies

There's an upside to days with dodgy, unproductive weather where you can't do much outside. You can spend it inside learning, in my case, Auto-Wiring 101. My dilemma was a safety cut-off for the electric fuel pump, I want one (in the event of an accident etc). I can spend a bit more coin & buy a pressure switch from Holley, but I'd still need to buy adapters etc to run my standard oil pressure switch. Which I haven't had a pleasant experience with in the past, different thread sizes/brass bits cracking. :hmm: So, I got thinking & if there's anyone reading this with a shred of Auto-Sparky Genius, please correct me if I'm wrong here! I was going to write a heap of text, but pictures work better, please excuse the dodgy Paint skillz. These are the two options I've come up with, the first relay is just to give me an independent ignition switched-power source for the second relay. One option, using the standard 'Normally Closed' oil pressure sender as a cut-off for the fuel pumps power supply. Another option, using the alternator as the cutoff. Thoughts/suggestions welcome!- 539 replies

Paint turned out to dry quick enough for a mock-up shot, quite happy with the result. No detailing of the writing, going for somewhat subtle as far as the overall visual theme goes.Nothing against painted cam covers being a feature, they look good in the right application, just not my preference here.- 539 replies

Slight change of plan, since I'm going to need to play with wiring/ fuel system etc in that area & the whole engine bay could do with a clean anyway.....This happened, quick & easy when you have a crane & a high-pressure washer. Wasn't happy with the results I got from the electric fuel pump I have laying around (30+psi on the bench-test), so a new low-pressure pump with filters is on order. Don't want to overwork the regulator. :no2: Cheers mate, SO KEEN! :D I'm lucky I have an understanding family, for the first time ever I won't be with my family on Christmas Day this year. Circumstances etc. Although if I don't make it over to Adelaide for my niece's first birthday in a few months, I'm a dead man. Sounded like a fair deal to me! Still a fair bit to do, cam-covers/intake manifold are between coats of paint as I type, mostly fiddly final-test fit type things. Nearly finished compiling my electrical items shopping list, so I can do that all in one go. Gonna have to conquer that gremlin sooner or later, P.S - I dislike wiring.- 539 replies

Hiro, the walking Toyota Encyclopedia strikes again! :laff: You'll still do fine with a 4A-FE. :y:

WMMH - Getting a phone call from an ebay seller regarding a purchase, to inform they don't have that item in stock until mid-January. But they can send me the same thing that's from a brand-name manufacturer & more expensive at no extra cost immediately, what colour would I like? This is how you earn your positive feedback ebay sellers! Oh, Blue Things engine bay missing an engine instead of a gearbox for change, that makes me happy too.

They probably fit into the overall colour scheme better that way, but the looks on wheel alignment guys faces when they see them would be priceless to see! :D

YouTube video of previously mentioned final flogging, have never revved it this hard before. Would have just bricked the throttle & let it go, but I wanted to keep a running engine if that was the case. Turned out that I needed Blue Thing to 'nudge' Sudi back up the driveway a little so I have some space to work. Had to do some serious de-vegetation work too, actually removal work tomorrow as it's too bloody warm. :D- 539 replies

Welcome aboard! Good to see you're off to a great start bang-for-buck-wise, you'll have a ball in one of these in khanacross. Given that I have limited motorsport experience myself, all I can say is keep things fun. It's a Corolla, it's cheap, there be no sheep stations up for grabs. ;) I believe you will also be pleasantly surprised as to what a 7A-FE is capable of, good luck! :y:

I'm digging the semi-rainbow brake calipers, different to the red/black/gold I usually see. :) I'm loving the engine bay...soooo neat!

The present is indeed awesome, so happy! What made me equally happy, if not more, was the Corolla love. Seriously, when you've just stuffed up & semi-wrecked your car, nothing deters you from throwing a Molotov cocktail at it more than people telling you they have parts if you need them. It is very much appreciated & will be returned where I can. :y: An engine crane has been borrowed, some bits should arrive tomorrow, some more bits should arrive in the near future. Good times await! Random comparison shot.- 539 replies

I know I have some of the bits I need laying around as spares, just have to find them, work out what I don't have & then hit people up for them with cash/beverages in hand. I've been lucky to have had several people let me know that they have bits I may need, feeling the Corolla love right now. :y: A piece of good news for a change? I have (fkn finally) sorted out what's happening with the ignition system. From my research/reading, I found several options. Running a HyperPak unit is one of the most commonly suggested, the trouble for me with it is, the people who told me to buy one didn't have one themselves. The people who did have one themselves, told me to avoid the thing like the plague. :blinks: *A lot of research & crash-course learning later* I found something that will do the job with the minimum amount of fuss, relatively speaking. A downside to it was, it was out of my budget for the time being. To my joy (yeah, I teared up a little) my family have collaborated together to help me get an early Christmas Present. It may also be to get me to shut-the-f**k-up about getting this engine running & actually getting it running, but hey...I'm grateful! http://www.msdigniti...16019&terms=6al Quite possibly overkill & capable of much more than I need it to do for now, but that nitrous capability is certainly appealing. ;) Laptop-tuning/TFATF jokes are just kinda hollow now, otherwise I would have already. I finish work for the year tomorrow, after that I will be borrowing an engine crane, giving the 2A-C one final flogging (if it dies - don't care) & yanking it out for hopefully the first & last time. I am lucky enough to be able to (again) borrow my housemates car while BT is off the road. :)- 539 replies

Solid object: 1 Blue Thing: 0 There's a few bent/broken things, nothing that can't be fixed/replaced. That fixing will be easier without an engine in the way, going to finish what I need to on the new one & drop that in. With any luck, aiming to have it running sometime early next year.- 539 replies
