BiGGy Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 I have an ea82 seca and I'm wondering if its possible to convert to awd, I see the aus rally awd corolla that isn't avail to public. Do the awds still have the east west engine setup? The awds are very rare to see and are mostly those crappy wagons. Do the ae82s have the body to support an awd gearbox with the shaft and rear diff? Has anyone done anything like this before? I see a place for a shaft on the inside, but not really under the car. Does anyone have any photos of the awd driveline to share? Quote
Des Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 There is a thread floating around similar to your question. Yea it could be done but how deep is your pocket? Quote
Jason Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 you gona a need a lot of custom work...... Quote
BiGGy Posted October 19, 2006 Author Report Posted October 19, 2006 meh, I don't think its worth it. Does anyone have a link to a car for sale that is an awd hatch? Or has anyone ever seen one for sale? Quote
Redwarf Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 The Turtle was the only AWD Corolla released in Oz. You ain't gunna find an AWD AE82. You can buy the TRD rally Corolla's, a guy in QLD has one. You just need VERY deep pockets. The lump in the tranny tunnel is to house the exhaust and for structural strength, not for a tail shaft. Unless you're a fabricator of the higher order, it'd cost..... well, a lot. Quote
BiGGy Posted October 19, 2006 Author Report Posted October 19, 2006 did some google research, the ZZ models come out with an auto only awd and continued for a few years. can't see them anywhere for sale. A manual conversion seems easy then an awd conversion. Quote

How much is a brand new TRD? Edited October 19, 2006 by BiGGy Quote
irokin Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 A manual conversion seems easy then an awd conversion. The center diff is going to be integrated into the gearbox...so no chance of doing that unless there was a manual AWD gearbox to suit the application. Quote
Redwarf Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 How much is a brand new TRD? It wasn't brand new, it was pre loved, and I'd say in the six figure range. Quote
7shades Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 I have a Tercel. Its selectable 4wd. It rocks. :D Quote

A manual conversion seems easy then an awd conversion. Pretty sure there never was an AWD ZZE sold here, but there definitely are ones overseas. That being said, the Ae10x also had an AWD sedan variant, not sure about the 11x and 9x (apart from the 95), but they are very rare here. To the OP, the Group N-P rally Corollas use the running gear from a GT-FOUR Celica, nothing Corolla about them (including the 3SGTE engine), so a lot of custom work is required Quote
towe001 Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 Body = AE82 Drivetrain = AE95 I think one way to make it easier to figure out what needs doing would have to get both an AE95 and AE92 up on hoists and take pics and measurements of the undersides of both cars. That way you'll get a better idea of what the AE82 needs to be modified. But, like everbody else has said, its a waste of time and money. But on the other side of it, its left field, waaaaay left field. Quote
styler Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 (edited) no way! :) for something twice as fast and a quarter of the price buy a factory awd car, like a pulsar gtir, spend a few grand and walk out with tens of thousands of dollars in your pocket. not saying it can't be done! its just a lot more expensive than it looks! GTiRs are dogs through corners (very front-heavy), gearboxes are quite weak, imported and turbo so insurance is a nightmare..... Quote
