When I was playing around with my strut, putting spacer at the top, the shocks would've been TOO short. For it to be captive and still have some sort of droop, I think you would have to have half spacer at the top and half at the bottom.

But yeah, my shocks don't keep the springs captive at all.

SO, i picked up another pair of standard rear springs last night, and thought i'd chuck them on the car tonight as there's about a 20mm difference from the RHS to LHS heights. Thought i'd start with the side that was higher (drivers side) - took the spring out after a bit of banging around, and realised that this spring was actually the same size as the new ones i got (thought this one was too high) So looks like i have to take out and swap the LHS spring as it would now appear this one is too short - will look like a 4WD when they're all in, but that's what regency wants :hmm:

Also looks like i've gotta get some tapered wheel nuts for the rims as the ones i've got don't lock properly (as the hole on the rim kinda tapers in). So will try and source some of these and some lock nuts tomorrow

Unfortunately though i couldnt get around to do the other side as i got bitten by a f$#ken white tail spider  so gonna have to go out tomorrow morning and try to get the LHS out, then get some wheel nuts, and it'll be set to take for a drive.

Also had second thoughts about the 210mm 7kg springs - think i'll just stick with what i've got in there as there's a bit of travel, and its not gonna draw much attention

Hey man,

Love your build up so far, one of my favourite KE builds to date. :hmm: (long time reader, decided to finally post)

I am almost certain that you can get some tapered wheel nuts to suit SSR rims from SCA, iirc. I'm not 100% sure, but I am fairly sure that I have read that in a thread somewhere on AE86DC. Might be worth looking into, as I'd imagine that they would be a a fair bit cheaper than genuine wheel nuts. Also, do you have any ppictures of the new wheels on the car?

Good luck with the build man, and sorry to hear about he whitetail bite.

Thanks mate - always happy to hear good feedback! :hmm: Excuse my ignorance, but what is SCA? Guessing its some kind of manufacturer? Was hoping to be taking the car out for a drive today so gonna see what i can find out there, but will see how i go. definitely want to avoid buying SSR nuts though if i can avoid it

The spider bite has gone down today so I'm heading out to pop the LHS spring out and then should be able to get pics of the wheels on it (at 4wd height).

Thanks for the comments!

Ah, here i was thinking it was a special manufacturer

All good though - rang around this morning and found some at my local bob-jane - set of 16 for $40, which was alright (most places wanted $3/each, got them for $2.50  ). So they're on now, the LHS spring has been replaced (still a slight difference in height, but will do), and test drive completed, with no issues!

Anyway, less talk, more pictures hey:

Got a feeling I'm gonna have to put stock springs in the front too (the pic of it on the slope where the rear is almost level with the front gives me that impression :hmm: ). Will measure the height though and see if regency will have any issues with it, which i think will be the case

Wow, very nice mate. Looks like a completely different car with the SSRs compared to the hotwires. Hopefully regency won't have a problem with it at that height, but once it clears (or what ever they do there ) returning it to a lower height will look tops

Also, nice find on the wheel nuts. $40 seems like a good price for the 16. Turns out those SCA ones required a little stuffing around with to fit properly, so yeah, good thing you found some that suit elsewhere :hmm:

Yeah, definitely a different look compared to the hotwires hey - once its through regency the rear kings will go back in, and still deciding on those new 210mm ones i was gonna get for the front. Was good though with the new tyres and stock springs as i was actually able to take the car for a drive fully loaded with passengers (all about 90-100kg each) without scrubbing :hmm: looking forward to the whole process being over shortly!

Was happy with the wheel nuts - anything under $50 was gonna be alright, and they fit well and seem to do the job (doing 130 on a freeway last night and none of them popped off  ), so can't complain!

I like the rims I must say, I have always been keen on the reverse meshies.

I ended up with a set of formula mesh though in the same size and was amazed and how good they looked when I did a test fit. SSR mesh on KE70/AE71's just look the goods.

IMHO I think the E7's look better with 14's than 15's, but sprinters go well with 15's.

You've gotta get yourself a set of SSR centre caps too, I usually hate centre caps but the original SSR ones aren't gigantic like many are and look nice when on the rim.

One other thing, are you running hub centric adapters on the rims?

Thanks - might look into getting some centre caps, but will see :y: I agree - E7's look good with 14's on them better than 15s! Pretty happy with them though, and now just looking forward to getting the rear back to how it was, and consider options for the front (decided not to get the 210mm's for now). What are hub centric adaptors? Are is that just another name for spacers? If so, I'm not running any at this stage, but will see how it all sits when its back to the old setup after regency.

I now wanna get my a/c regassed with something other than R134A as i was driving the other day in 30 degree weather and it was really struggling. So gonna see what other options there are out there to chill the air a bit better. It was all replaced (custom made setup after the 4age went in), so pretty sure its just the gas not performing too well. So that'll be the next thing done!

A while back a I read an article on a forum about spacers and also the way in which hubs hold the load of the wheel. Now to answer your question, firstly I'll explain what being hub centric means. As far as I'm aware all Toyota have hub-centric wheel locators, now if you take off a wheel you'll notice that there is a protruding part which sticks about about 7-8mm in the centre of the hub, on the front it also has a bearing cap sitting on it. Now if you look at a pair of stock rims they have that centre hole machined out to the same diameter of the protruding part. The point of it is, wheel studs aren't actually meant to support the weight of the car they are mearly for holding the wheel to the hub. Its that centre part which the rim is supposed to rest its weight on, everything is happy until you go to after market rims. If you have a look at your SSR's the inside of that hole is a greater diameter than the stock rims so thus it wont rest on the hub centre anymore, what the adapter rings do is sit inside the rim and fill the gap thus restoring the load to the centre of the hubs and not the wheel studs.

Does that make sense to you?

Here is a picture of one of mine:

Hub_rings.jpg

I bought 4 at a bob jane for $7 each, its a bit dear but worth it to have the security of knowing your studs aren't likely to shear. And even if one does (from over tightening say) its not likely to cause a chain reaction and you lose the whole rim.

Spacers are a whole nother league, and just about every single one out there doesn't factor in the hub centric design. There are some really good quality hub centric bolt ons but I don't think it'd be even possible to make a hub centric slip on.

One other thing, its particularly important to have the hub-centric rings when your wheels use tapered nuts.

I found you a pic of the SSR caps too if you haven't already seen them:
