Ke70/ae71/te72/ae86 Similarities & Differences

So why can't the AE86 rear coil overs be used on a KE70/AE71???

but if u think about the forces that this suspension system loads onto the area that was only designed for a shock mount, then it is too large, thats why it is recommended to reinforce the area around the shock mount

So where does the spring mount on the rear of a KE70/AE71? I'd go and have a look myself, except my friend who is meant to be showing me my prospective AE71 hasn't showed up. :P

Oh yeah i realise the extra forces involved, but that doesnt mean they can't fit.

 

The spring is on the diff/axle housing.

Thanks for the pic. I did end up getting to check one out first hand today, and I'm not so sure a coilover would fit. Look at the space between the side of the shock and one of the panels joins. There's only about 20mm to spare (maximum), so there would have to be some rather serious work to make the spring fit up there.

Oh ok. Well i have never really looked into it, as my shock spring setup is more than adequate.

 

They are KYB short strokes with 6.5kg springs.

yea i don't see the need for coilover in the rear unless you really need to upgrade, there are so many other rear suspension combinations that are proven to work better and all you lose is height adjustability

I like the idea of height adjustability so I can circuit race and motorkhana the vehicle. That being said, I'm sure the car would do fine with a non-height adjustable setup on the rear, and even on the front, provided the setup was well configured for track use.

Okay, I now have a 1983 AE71 in my posession, though it is missing the front left strut as well as the tie rod end from that side. These are easily replaced, as I'll just get a pair of coilovers for the front, and the tie rod end is available in a pack on eBay for $107 (includes two tie rod ends and two ball joints I think). However, my research has opened a new kettle of fish. So, if any of you know, can you please tell me if the following AE86 parts can be used on the front of an AE71:

 

Castor rods

Castor rod brace (fits between the front ends of the caster rods, intended to add extra bracing - is the distance the same on the AE86 and the AE71?)

hey guys when using an s series diff in a 71 is it neccesary to use the 86 handbrake cables as well? my brother is currently using his stock ones and they do not spin freely

I've now been told that the rear suspension on the KE70/AE71 is exactly the same as on the AE86. And I've seen pictures of AE86 suspension that back this up. So the AE71 definitely seems the way to go.

I've been trying to find a full kit prothane or energy suspension bushings for my ke70. All I found was the full kit for AE86 or Sport SR5. Will these bushing kits work on the KE70?

If I can't get a full kit, which bushings are vital for improving my handling?

Front - Control arm - inner

Front - Radius rod

Sorry to hi jack this thread agian but wanted to know if the AE86 Standard front springs will fit the KE70 standard front struts??
