Sinate Posted August 1, 2007 Report Posted August 1, 2007 I'm buying a 4k worked engine tonight guy doesnt no to much about it as he bought it off his mate who spent some money on it. It doesnt come with a head so can't really run it. What are some clear give away things to look out for that its been worked. Quote
styler Posted August 1, 2007 Report Posted August 1, 2007 piston size to see if it has been bored out with bigger pistons. shape of the piston top to see if its another type of piston, eg higher compression dome etc lightened flywheel, feel round the back for a big step take off sump and see if pistons are forged or cast by looking inside the piston for casting marks you might be able to see if the crank has been rebalanced with recent holes drilled you might be able to see if the rods have been cleaned up and maybe a small amount taken off the bottom for balancing cleaned up block casting inside new bearings would be good but i don't think you can tell without taking a cap off to look which i don't recommend at the moment but really besides capacity, balancing, new bearings and a small amount of lightening theres not much more you will see from a street bottom end, on race maybe stroker crank or aftermarket forged crank, better bearings, lightened knife edge crank, lighter aftermarket rods, arp bolts, dry sump, custom high compression forgies, high volume oil pump etc why don't you ask the guy who built it for the specs? Taz_Rx Posted August 2, 2007 Report Posted August 2, 2007 One more thing that could be useful if it already has the top off - pour a little bit of oil in ontop of each piston, move them up and down a bit (not all the way to the top) and see how much oil seeps past the rings. :n: Quote
beerhead Posted August 2, 2007 Report Posted August 2, 2007 The money in a good worked motor is all in the head. I really don't think an atmo K motor will be tearing standard rods or cranks apart that often, I've revved a standard bottom end to 7.5K rpm daily for 6 months, and it wasn't very fresh. The only advantage in the bottom end might have fresh bearings, or maybe modified pistons to up the compression. Is the camshaft still in the block? I'd be surprised if its a good bottom end with the head removed, doesn't really make that much sense, I'd pull my ported head off after destroying the bottom end somewhere, not before. Quote
Sinate Posted August 2, 2007 Author Report Posted August 2, 2007 Cheers guys he rang me today and had cost the previous owner $2100 to get the whole engine done. Yes comes with cam and new clutch for the price both of those are worth it. What would a rough cost to get my head down? Quote
beerhead Posted August 2, 2007 Report Posted August 2, 2007 You'll have to call around for that one. Expect $200-400 for a head reco, acid bath, etc. If you want it ported and flow benched I've got contacts in Bris, I can hook you up with, $400 - hideous amounts of money depending on how far you want to go, O/S valves, match porting etc, its all about how deep your wallet is. Sinate Posted August 2, 2007 Author Report Posted August 2, 2007 I'm going to just get a die grinder and have a go at it myself, then take it to a n engineer and get it shaved a bit to up compression. The only problem I for see is possible valves/springs might not be up to par with some good revving ill be giving it. Quote

Redwarf Posted August 2, 2007 Report Posted August 2, 2007 ^^^^^^^^^ Man speaketh truth. Why do it yourself, and unless you've done it before, numerous times not do a particularly good job, when for a few hundred it can be done right? Quote
Sinate Posted August 2, 2007 Author Report Posted August 2, 2007 i have a budget and buying this block didnt come into lol now i can't just chuck a standard 3k head on. It will only be a clean up and port matching, nothing majour. Although i havent done it before i don't see to much trouble if its just a small bit off. I'm pretty set on doing it aye wont be done for a probably a month so will give me more time to research, looks like 4 hours have been spent just now reading on how to head work. This will just be for a weekend/sometimes daily car. If I'm on a buget for this head what are minimum things i will need to do, ie valve springs, steams.. etc? Quote
