decoop Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 Hi all, i'm converting my ae71 to manual and have to put the spigot bearing in. I've never done this before so is the bearing meant to be a tight fit in the back of the crank?. On the box for the bearing it says 38x14. I got it from a bearing joint so it should be the right one and i've cleaned the hole it has to go in, but i can't get it in short of belting it in with a hammer. Any ideas? Cheers, Eddie. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 (edited) I should be a nice snug tight'ish fit, but not require heaps of belting to get in. If you've got access to some verniers the measure the ID on the crank and check that against the bearing. BTW, be glad somebody else got it out for you, thats the hard bit!! :y: edit: Oh and if you do need to "persuade" it a bit, find a socket with the same OD as the bearing so it sits against the outer casing, and hit that with the hammer. Don't wanna fark a new bearing just by whacking it the wrong way. :) Edited May 22, 2008 by Taz_Rx Quote
styler Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 got the old spigot bearing out... if you had to do it you would see its a pain to do as its a tight fit, use a impact or threaded puller or pack with wet newspaper or thick grease and use a rod same id as bearing and hammer it out. new one use socket same as od and drive it in, lubricate if needed. decoop Posted May 22, 2008 Author Report Posted May 22, 2008 (edited) I might not have been clear enough, The car was auto, i'm converting it to manual and i have bought a brand new bearing to put in, i'm not using an old one. I was hoping to get the box in today but this bearing thing has set me back a bit. I will try lubing up the hole with grease or something and use a socket on it. Edited May 22, 2008 by decoop Quote
decoop Posted May 22, 2008 Author Report Posted May 22, 2008 Ok i got it in with a little persuasion but does it have to go all the way in to the back of the hole or just enough so the bearing is not poking out?. Quote

Des Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 I think the bearing part number is 6001, Thats the number for a 4age crank and i think 4ac has the same bearing. Should only need to tap the bearing in with a hammer using the right sized socket to fit in the crank without getting stuck but big enough not to damage the bearing. Quote
decoop Posted May 22, 2008 Author Report Posted May 22, 2008 Thanks for your help guys, its in so is the flywheel and clutch, just gotta do the heavy bit now. The thing with that is i was gunna take the part of the exhaust off that crosses under the gearbox but one of the nuts stripped :) . So fun times ahead trying to manouver it over that and line up the input shaft..... Quote

tojo2 Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 A tip for next time : I usually put bearings and seals in the freezer for a few houres before I fit them. Makes them slightly smaler and easyer to fit Quote
towe001 Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 Not a bad tip. Going to have to remember that one :) Quote
decoop Posted May 22, 2008 Author Report Posted May 22, 2008 Yeah i was gunna say that, works the same with diff centers. Quote
