I purchased a ke55 with a 4k on the weekend and it has a strange cooling issue, when driving around town it runs fine but as soon as i start to speed up about 60 and upwards she starts to over heat! :P

Any idea what it could be?

just gonna take a guess but is the clutch fan stuffed? it should be easier to turn by hand with the engine off when its cold.

 

at speed it shouldnt be working as the cars getting airflow, if it is the engine would be getting loaded up more.

 

I'm guessing they are a viscous type someone correct me if I'm wrong

Checked your hoses, thermostat, water pump and etc.

KE55s don't have a clutch fan from memory, only the KE70 4Ks did.

 

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though.

Check your belt tension on the fan belt. Should be like a violin string. At high speed it might be slipping. This drives the water pump as well, so even though you get natural flow through from the speed, you ain't pumpin no juice.

 

Are you having flat battery issues?

Funnily enough I had a falcon ute do the same thing, be perfect around town but would boil on the highway.

 

Was a cracked head.

 

Check the obvious things first as already stated, flush te radiator, change the thermostat, check hoses and clamps, flush the block (you would be amazed at how much crap comes out of one) and go from there.

I have flushed the radiator, but ill look into flushing the block tonight and might get a new thermostat,

 

Not having any battery issues either!

I'd say water pump....it's on it's way out. Had the same issue on a KE70. It didn't have enough flow to keep up with the heat buildup at higher speeds (more load).

Good point, could have crusty as or non existent vanes on the pump impeller.

Checked the water pump and that was fine,

Removed the head and the gasket was stuffed on number 4 cyclinder, So will get new gaskets and clean it up and hopefully it should all be good, doesn't look like it needs to be ground down or anything! :P

Get it skimmed anyway Leigh, not worth not doing it. Last time I did it, I blew another head gasket in a week....never again!! :S

Head's back and torqued up correctly, new water pump, thermostat and all new gaskets but still overheats ! Grrrrrrrrrrrr.............. :D

something to do with the oil maybe? does it still pull well after 60kays, or very sluggish?

Pull your radiator out and get it professionally flushed. Every old toyota I have owned has needed a reco'd radiator as they end up full of sludge, along with a water pump and thermostat.

 

A hose pushed up her just doesn't cut the mustard for getting the sludge out.
