Hi all you rev heads.

I'm wanting to throw a few ideas around regarding an engine conversion I'm looking at undertaking next year.

I've got this pretty little TC Gemini coupe laying around that I've ripped out the gutsy G180 and 5 speed to make way for... something...

I've been thinking about chasing down a 3SGE BEAMS engine and 6 speed for her, but wondering if it's worth the time, effort and price. Maybe a 4AGZE might be easier and cheaper??? Or a 3TGTE (considering I got one sitting there, and already building one for my T18...) or even a 2TG?

Any wild ideas welcome, but please bare in mind, I want to get it street legal, so the max capacity I can go (due to weight, under WA licencing mod laws) is 2.4L for turbo, 3.5 for NA, and the engine bay is kinda rather short... lol

well I have seen in a magazine of a 4agze conversion before. It would be a fairly straightforward swap. You want an atmo engine yes?

Not too fussed on atmo or not really... if a turbo will be a better option, I'm all for it... I want something that would be reasonably powerful, but not over powered, if you know what I mean... I don't want to have to upgrade the diff that's in it, as the previous owner went to a great deal of trouble to stick VR disk brakes on all 4 corners, so if that means I have to go for revs over torque, so be it, but I'd prefer torque any day...

Just turbo the G180. Guys were running 12-13 second quarters with them with drawthru turbo setups 12-15 years ago.

The stock gearboxes and diffs are very strong.

Oops... kinda sold the G180 already... Oh well. I heard they had a big problem with oiling the cams or something??? anyways, I prefer a bit of toyota twin cam performance over an old isuzu anyways.

My mate has a gemini coupe sports sedan. Running a holden 186 making 300hp atw. Although there is not much gemini left of it. Spaceframed, BIG fibreglass flares, 9inch wheels etc.

But no way in hell of getting that street legal. Have you thought of nissan motors (since your already cross breeding) as much as I'm a toyota purist. Sr20det would go alright in one of them i think. The make good power straight out of the box. and have torque to go with it.

How the heck was your mate getting 300hp out of a 186? boosted right? I love the thought of boosting an old holden actually. I thought about doing one of those crappy starfire engines that came in the last of the toranas, and just trying to force like 45psi into it until it popped.

In all honesty, I'd probably go for a CA before I turned to an SR, not so much to be difficult, but more to be different. I do prefer to do things a little unexpected and unusual. Maybe even like a 22R or something?

sometimes i think there are just too many options... lol

Ooooh I just had an interesting idea...

Remember the diesel Gemini? I had one... :rolla:

Grab the fuel system from one of those, and whack a dirty great Chev V6 turbo in it! :hmm:

OOOH!!! Turbo diesel!!! I like! talk about torque... think the stock diff would handle 3-400nm of torque at 2700rpm?

I wonder what capacity I could get away with as far as diesel is concerned... Either way, didn't they have a 2.4L diesel in one of the hiluxes?

EDIT: 2LTE sounds good... 2.4L turbo diesel, making 97hp and 240nm of torque!!!

Intercooler and MORE BOOST!!! mwahahaha!

I have a 2LT in my Surf, and whilst it does struggle to pull 2 tonnes around, it does have mountains of torque.

I was toyiing with the idea of repowering it with a 1UZ, until a local deisel fitter I just met took me for a spin in his LN65 ute...

Hooooly shit.

He has his tuned for 10psi and is making 100 Kilowasps AT THE WHEELS and somewhere close to 400nm... and thats without a cooler. With a cooler he reckons he could up the boost to 12-14psi, and then add LPG injection.... :rolla:

It'd be different!

whoa nelly!!!

That's a rather decent amount of torque!!! like a V8 only not... wouldn't that mean I'd be better off with a taller diff ratio? something to compensate for the low revs...? hmmm...
