What sort of sheet metal are you using on your rust repairs?

My KE30 will be going under the knife sometime next year. Haven't done any true rust repairs before(only bogged up old shitters)

That crown is BEGGING for some 1UZ love.

I just use old panels for metal, this is torana bonnet. Its good to have a slightly thicker donar metal (old holden), it makes it a bit easier to weld.

Finally talked myself into leaving the aircon by about 4 this arvo, and worked on it till dark.

 

Got one side nearly done.'

 

Weldings not real flash, trying to spot most of it to keep the heat out, don't want to warp the panels!

Then i found some i missed in behind the wheel area.

 

Fixed

 

Front guard, put a patch in, but when i was grinding i found more holes.

Would love to pull the guard off and have a better look, but in a hurry to get it going,

Will fix the rest tomorrow.

 

Hopefully finish all the rust repairs tomorrow!!

rear wagon window PS, thought the bit in the middle was ok, but tuned out to be real thin, so i cut the whole piece out.

 

 

 

Done some damage too, caught a bit i was grinding up on the flap disk, it got thrown in to my knee. ouch! Should have got it stitched.

 

 

forgot to add, the car is all straightened now, and in etch.

 

Was pretty fussy with the roof, didn't bother as much with the panels as the rest of the car is not perfectly straight.

 

Will undercoat on monday. Have bought the paint too for the topcoat too.

looking good mate, those grinding discs hurt when they shatter at 15000rpm to the forehead! (still have the mark)

Yeh, i have one stuck in the shed wall, kind of glad it missed!

Thanks scott! you must have done a fair bit of welding yourself, you know how hard it is to weld this thin stuff.

 

I'm a sparky by trade, i bought this little 120 a year ago, before that i used to borrow my brothers mig,

 

the most helpful thing i did on the crown was change to a .6 wire from the normal .8, i think it made a big difference for me.

All inside the doors are painted, damn this colour is bright!!

 

Working away atm so will have to wait till the weekend to do the doors shut spray.

 

 

Also my brothers sleeper spec 2jz mazda 929 is featured in the in-the-build section of zoom this month, he's pretty proud of himself.

I am convinced i have no skills at painting, so will be buffing it soon.

 

I did a way better job of spraying my ke25, but this one is not real flat i have to admit.

 

The ke30 back where it belongs.

 

 

 

so now i shall fit the r31 diff, and pull the engine to do the bottom end..................then rego.

 

oh yeh, rustproofing! and dropping the roof lining off tomorrow to get one made.

OMFG - That crown is looking like its former glory and how it looked in the photo's on ebay :) Nice work man, those kinda repairs would have costed you a overrated at any panel shop, or more... Will be up the coast again within the next month or so, I'll have to pop around if I get a chance, would love to see the full collection in person.

 

BTW there's a dude in Yandina with that sprays and rents out booths that does paint jobs on fully prepped cars for chips. I'll dig up the details if you like, the paint job on my mates VT was prime.

quick thread hi-jack, beerhead how much does that dude charge? I'm looking for a coastie painter to do a quick matt black once over.

$350 if it's undercoated, rubbed back, ready for top coat and you supply the paint (a year or 2 back) The funny part is most begginers who rent his spray booths end up spending 6 hours in the booth, and spend more money in rental than what he charges to give you an awesome spray job.
