Diesel Vs Petrol

Featured Replies

hey guys well I'm looking at buying a hilux 4x4 for daily duties and for offroad on weekends and 4x4 trips and all that.

I'm wondering from peoples history how the 4 cyl. petrol engines go offroad or whether the diesels are really worth the extra money? also how dual fuel LPG ranks in all this?

any advise is great just i wanna get me rolla off the road so i can work on it :(

The low down torque you get from a diesel offroad cannot compare to a petrol and you can do water & mud without the possibility of wet electrics.

lpg will be terrible for off road, diesel all the way, my mate had a 2.6 (i think) turbo and it was awesome. Great on fuel aswell.

exactly what i thought well i guess that solves my problem to diesel i go! haha anyone know how the 2.8L diesels go (non turbo) i couldnt imagine they would be much slower than a stock corolla?

G`day mate, thats an age old argument and is sure to raise some emotion with the purists.

My two cents worth is that I`ve had both diesel and petrol engines in 4wd vehicles and they both serve their purpose.

I currently own a petrol Landcruiser, but have had diesel landcruiser and both diesel and petrol Nissan Patrols.

What I found after all the years is that I can service a petrol engine at home. I can make repairs whilst on the road/track and I can generally diagnose a problem. The diesel engine these days is a very specialized engine. Although they are made to last (and they do) they are fitted with ancilliaries that only a specialist can repair/replace and that comes at a price. Most are turbo`d and there is another part to wear out/require rebuild regularly.

The performance of both current types of engines is quite comparable, with the "off the line pick-up" being a little better from the petrol engine, in my experience. Mind you, there are 4cyl turbo automatics that will blow me off at every set of traffic lights.

Fuel economy is definitley better from a turbo diesel, but you need to do the sums and include the much higher servicing costs or you may find that it is just false economy.

Rebuild cost. Diesel,,,,,,unbelievably expensive, petrol,,,,, substancially cheaper and that goes for second hand used engines also.

Its a hard call which is better but at the end of the day, you may find yourself doing just what I did. I bought the one that looked best.

Good luck with your purchase and make sure that you do a few test drives to compare brands/models.

Cheers.

p.s. please punters, don`t hang me for my simle opinion.

2.8 turbo diesel in the toyota surfs go OK.

The same mate, his dad had the 2.8 and it was gutless compared to the turbo, and yes a diesel rebuild is expensive but you do it way later than petrol. I had a 3.0L V6 pajero that went everywhere and had torque where i wanted it and overall it was great but needed a head rebuild at 300k, my mates hi-lux is still going really strong after 370k.

ye they go ok, I still recon my t18 (completely different car though) is faster.

thanks for all the help guys well surprisingly enough ive just started a diesel mechanic apprenticeship which was another reason why i was swaying towards diesel.

but really ill wait to see what happens if a good deal comes up ill probably buy it.

cheers Tom

Ask love_ke70, Diesel with LPG = win :(

ive got diesel turbo courier 06 and havent had problem off road and has good fuel economy

I still want the 3 liter turbo engine though.....

Got one of those in the 4runner . Reliable solid torquy thing :P Old style pump so consumption is

about 10L /100Km on average

A brief summation of common Hilux/Surf diesels

2LT = Good.

2LTE = Avoid like the f*cking mormons

3L = Reliable but slow, very common

3L w/2LT turbo bolted on = Fast enough, still reliable

5L = Bulletproof, haz more torques, can tow a small block of flats, but not quickly

1KZ = Awesomepants engine, shits on all of the above

I've got myself a 94 surf with a 1kz in it. At this moment I don't think it is running at 100%, but I can tell you, even though it's not running quite right it is still killer off road and on. Just don't drive behind me otherwise you'll be dutched out by black smoke. ALOT of black smoke. Still trying to determin the cause of the smoke as there is several different things it could be. Anyway, diesel all the way. And if anyone has any ideas about my black smoke issues, don't be shy.
