Buff Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 (edited) ]Hey guys, I have an historic sports race car - a 69 clubman with a 1k series corolla engine. The car has a new race engine ready to be picked up & fitted, but I want to upgrade the dizzy. The current engine has the standard dizzy, and although it is adequate, the new engine will have 35% more power - up from 55hp to 85hp, and as the engine will be revving between 7800 - 8300, I am after a dizzy that will be more suited for motor sport. I am pretty much new to the corolla scene - well, doing the work myself that is, and would like some info on better brand dizzy's for circuit racing. Bare in mind its a K series single cam, 1066cc out to 1098cc and not a twincam engine like most modern clubbies run. If anyone can offer some advice, it would be appreciated. Also, I am in Sydneys west, so the closer to home the better for pick up. I will try & post up a pic or 2 of the old girl. Ta. Brad[ Edited September 27, 2010 by Buff Quote
jono1986 Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 Electronic dizzy or you can get an igniter and use a bigger coil Quote
altezzaclub Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 Electronic dizzy Yes- you should try and get away from points with those revs. Someone on here was selling Starlet electronic dizzys a few months back. The KP61 seems to be the one, there were thousands of them in NZ. The advance curve might be a trick, I assume you will need something special done by a dizzy specialist. Quote
parrot Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 If you were in Melbourne, i would suggest going to http://www.performanceignition.com.au/ for advice. Clearly you will need a distributor in good condition with no play in the shaft. And as above, you will definitely need it recurved to suit the motor characteristics. These guys can do all that for you. Presumably there is someone in Sydney, but I'm sure they could post something to you. New / rebuilt electronic and points dizzys for K engines are available very cheaply on US ebay but will have stock advance curves. There is a bit of info in the Car electrical section, including this thread for some background. Quote
MRMOPARMAN Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 if its in a historic class electronic ignition might not be allowed. if not look into twin points conversions. Quote

camerondownunder88 Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 Have you had issues with your points bouncing atm? I know one trick is run the later Bosch dizzy and put in holden XU-1 points there a stronger spring so will hold 8000RPM+ happy could try that. If not My KE15 with the early ND dizzy had a factory red line of 7000RPM. I have taken mine to 8000RPM (tacho stopped there) lol and points didnt cause issues. But I do run a CDI unit so it is picking up the signal more so that using it to switch so my points gap isnt as critical. As from personal experence a stock corolla dizzy in good condition will see 8000RPM no issues. Again I am not sustaining at this RPM so really it is a matter of what are you aloud to change in your class of racing and you might be able to play with different K dizzys lots of options.
