Today i got some 5 CSX alloys with 5 center caps and tyres for $100 , they are pretty rough and have good potential to polish up really nice, so ive been doing so with

I'm using p400 sand paper, but so far its taking for ever due to the fact i got to get through the alloy varnish, like some spots are done and look heaps good but it takes me ages just to do the tinniest bit.

 

so is there any quick or better alternative to getting the wheel varnish off without intense sanding >.<

Paint stripper? No idea just throwing ideas out there, maybe use paint stripper then polish them.

Try some 320 double sided foam pads, removed the clear coat on my challengers really well.

Get them soda/sand blasted. If you have the cash.

 

Also:

 

Chock the front wheels, jack a rear wheel off the ground.

 

Start car, put in 4th and let clutch out slowly.

 

Wheel will spin, hold sandpaper against it. :laff:

 

It works. (if your diff is locked don't bother).

Don't use paint Strippers on alloy wheels....

i use oven cleaner :o , leave sit for 15 mins , sand with 1200 grit :cool: , THEN wash :bash:

 

then polish :P

i have used my differential as a lathe before, to aid in wheel polishing.

 

i only did the lip on my SSR mesh's, not the whole wheel....

 

worked surprisingly well!

 

i just had a stack of wet and dry sand paper (400 up to 2000, maybe 5 different grades in the middle). started low, ended high. worked fantastic.

 

few chocks at the front wheels, i only used 1st gear though...4th might be a bit crazy....

 

however i should have clear coated the alloy lip, as now its oxodised...and needs to be done again!

You could also use gasket stripper, that stuff is mean on paint and it is safe for aluminium heads. Many paint strippers though are alkaline and will eat aluminium, sorry for not expanding on my previous comments.

 

When I polished mine, I went 180, 240, 400, 800, 1200, 2000 then polishing head on the drill. I had some really nasty scratches, some sections that were welded and hit with a dremel drum sander and then hand sanded, you wouldn't believe the finish, they came up amazingly well.

This, everytime I go to the corner shop they always ask if I have big job (Vietmanese owners) as I buy mr muscle in bulk for work, best aluminium cleaner we have ever used, we have professional aluminium cleaner at work that we no longer even use.
