AE82CS Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 Hey guys, trying to get the rocker covers off my 4AGE, but the problem is the factory grommets/gaskets will not come off! They are extremely hard and I've tried easing a flat head underneath to pry them off but they won't budge. Are there any suggestions? anything I could apply to help break them free? Cheers in advance. Quote
carbonboy Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 If you're going to be replacing the cam cover gaskets, a knife blade could be used to seperate them from the head/covers. Be careful not scratch the mating surfaces though! Quote
AE82CS Posted May 13, 2012 Author Report Posted May 13, 2012 It's the gaskets under the rocker cover bolts. So I've taken all 8 bolts off but the gaskets underneath will not budge and that is what is keeping the covers on. Apparently it's pretty common, but I couldn't find any info about how to remove them because they will not move! Quote
ke70dave Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 The guy before you has probably gone at it with silicon. if you are sure you have all the bolts off (its just those shiny nuts on top), get a rubber mallet and give it a decent hit. Quote
Boosted Posted May 19, 2012 Report Posted May 19, 2012 On my ZE, there's also a wiring loom piece that covers the rockers at the front of the motor and will stop you from getting the covers off. Otherwise, like ke70dave has mentioned, they'll need a sharp hit with a rubber mallet to break the seal. Quote
MYSTIK[RL] Posted May 19, 2012 Report Posted May 19, 2012 also the rubber washers that are under the acorn nuts on the covers also tend cause problems as well, as they go hard and crispy. i had similar problems removing the covers, and that is was my problem was. Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted May 20, 2012 Report Posted May 20, 2012 Smash them any way you have to to get them off, then buy new 7AFE ones from Toyota for a couple of bucks each. Quote
parrot Posted May 20, 2012 Report Posted May 20, 2012 Use multigrips to twist the washers off, then tap the cam cover fairly gently with a rubber mallet. You will need to replace the washers anyway. Quote
AE82CS Posted May 22, 2012 Author Report Posted May 22, 2012 Cheers lads, I haven't had a chance to get back to it yet! Lots going on at the moment, yep I should have my myself clear from the start, it is the washers that sit under the acorn nuts in which are giving me the problem. I'll have a go at it with the multigrips and with the mallet. So you guys recommend replacing them with 7AFE ones? Also, I am thinking of getting manon racing coilovers 6/4kg soon, anybody recommend these! Cheers. Quote
