hi guys I'm 17 and have myself a ae82 rolla with a bigport 4age that i race at hillclimbs and sprints, i have been doin really well in it but i think its about time to do a bit of work to the motor. just want to know whats the best direction to head in, as in what to do to the motor first and wheres good places to source parts from. my aim is to get as much power out of the motor as i can. i only have about $1500- $2000 to play with tho.

I'd say upgrade all the cooling gear so you can run it full throttle all the time with no issues.

Lighter flywheel, Better clutch and you may squeeze in extractors.

And then tyres, tyres, tyres. (yes I know its not engine)

They are generally the best bang for buck to increase the overal performance (cornering & acceleration) you can do.

This want get you the "max power figure" for this amount of money but it will get the most power to the ground and reliably.

There's really nothing to gain from these motors unless you are prepared to upgrade the cam duration, clean up the head and increase compression. Then you really need adjustable cam gears. If you try and go with more cam lift, it gets expensive. If you go big on duration, you need to abandon the factory ECU. And so on, and so on. It's a bottomless pit. In my opinion extractors are a waste of time, as the factory team managed to get plenty of kilowatts using a factory manifold.

If the clutch is fine now, leave it alone. It should rev pretty well now, a lighter flywheel just means you hit the limiter faster.

I would make sure your suspension is optimal and tyres as mentioned.

It is probably a lot of fun as it is, A lot of often recommended changes will just turn it into a pig.

well we've been racing our 82 4age bigport for 3yrs now and have just had the engine rebuilt for the 2nd time (got ripped off with a dodgy first time) and have just upgraded from peddars suspension to bazda coilovers. Our car also has a kazzar lsd. Tyres will give you the biggest performance boost for your buck, but the down side is the stickier they get the quicker they wear out so the cost is ongoing. For me the Advans were have been the best tyre and we've tried a few including the 888s. Our engine has the biggest cams you can go with standard ecu, extractors, bored out, h-beam rods and a smallport crank (got bigger journals). Its delievering 200psi compression and it revs out to 8k no problem. If you want it rebuilt mitch from on the forums here did the rebuild and we're really happy wth his work. Consider a 20v including gbox with lsd as i think that might be an effective upgrade as an option.
