Door Help/diff Help?

Featured Replies

I'm thinking of paint stripping my stalet doors if I was to take it back to bare

Metal would I have to etch prime it then primer and then paint? And what diff options do I have for a ke30?

I didn't... We used chemical stripper and a tungsten scraper to get it back to bare steel, treated it with Rustkill (any phosphate product), gave it a thorough wash & dry then undercoated it.

My general understanding is that you should etch prime if you have anything more than small areas of bare steel. That's just from lots of reading and talking to paint shop guys. I gather it results in better paint adhesion

So if I paint strip my doors I should use etch prime, and how long can I leave just as bare metal?

Like will I have to

Etch prime it straight away after I paint strip it or can I leave it a couple of days?

theres a product, or a few on the market, that once you go to bare steel, you treat it with. contains phosporic acid. stops the steel rusting for a few weeks. i used that, then etch primed, then primed within a few days. remember, water still soaks through the primer, so you need to actually get the car into proper paint sooner rather than later.

can't remember the name of the stuff now.

If you paint strip, the etch prime, which contains a very mild does of that acid, will leave a coating on the steel, and it will be less susceptible to rusting than sanding it.

ever noticed, a car thats had a big scratch put in it, the scratch rusts, but a car thats had a chunk of paint flake off, usually from dents, often hail damage, doesnt rust. thats the effects of the acid.

Cheers, Andy

diff, hilux if you want strong. more details, if its a serious question, maybe a new thread.

anything can be made to fit...

thanks for your help, diff wise hilux diffs are exspensive here, ive heard you can ise a r32 skyline one???

There is bloke round somewhere that put a S13 rear end in a KE70.

But there is a serious amount of fabrication involved in this.

So the r32 would be possible I reckon but its not a basic swap in the slightest.

Most rust converters are phosphoric acid, some are tanic acid.

Sweet, so what diff will be a straight swap/not to much moderfacation involved??

maybe your thinking R31.

but thats more common in a KE70.
