glenpos Posted March 16, 2013 Report Posted March 16, 2013 hey mate my rt80 came out with the rare 8rb 1.9l a more powerful version of the 18r but the 18r is an easy engine to drop in with same mounts and a little more easy to get hold of. the only real difference with the 8rb to the 18r is the the 18r is a 2L? they look the same don't they, apart from twin carbs etc Quote
SimonM Posted March 17, 2013 Author Report Posted March 17, 2013 Got the Jellybeans for the corona today. Now I need to find some money for tyres. Won't be doing any work on her for a week or so though because I shut my finger in a door today. 3 hours in the hospital, some stitches and some codeine later and I'm sitting at home infront of the computer feeling useless :sob: Quote
glenpos Posted March 17, 2013 Report Posted March 17, 2013 beanies look good, ouch bet that hurt haha Quote
SimonM Posted March 17, 2013 Author Report Posted March 17, 2013 just tried to flush the radiator one handed... not gonna work. :/ Quote

SimonM Posted March 17, 2013 Author Report Posted March 17, 2013 Just to give an idea of how disgusting this engine really is.... Valve train: Inside the rocker cover A bit hard to see, but the spring on the left is out of an 18RC, the one on the right is the original. Seems like the valve on the left is sitting about 1mm higher than the others, which is causing it to run really roughly. Next time I have a day off uni, gonna go find a set of springs to replace the lot. Any suggestions as to the best way to clean all the rusty cr@p off without pulling the head off? Quote
SimonM Posted March 19, 2013 Author Report Posted March 19, 2013 this engine is starting to piss me off more and more. Got a water pump from Sprints today, brought it home, took the old one off and THEN realised that the new one is wrong :/ the new one is 'snub-nosed' so needs a smaller pulley. Gonna take it back tomorrow and see if they have the right one. Lots of fun. Also worked out why the 18R springs don't work. They have the same number of coils but have more resistance and are a few mm shorter. Which explains why the valve isn't closing all the way. Quote
glenpos Posted March 19, 2013 Report Posted March 19, 2013 yeah bloody hate getting wrong parts, ahh cool Quote
SimonM Posted March 21, 2013 Author Report Posted March 21, 2013 New water pump and thermostat housing. Painted pulley red just for a bit of fun. It'll go faster now! Before: After: Radiator has been sanded and painted. Still drying. def no more work til next week, because I cut the tip of my thumb off while cleaning the rocker cover. Another trip to hospital :bash: Quote
delorean88 Posted March 21, 2013 Report Posted March 21, 2013 Ouch man! And nah the 8r had a different combustion chamber, different head and valves its got a fair bit more power over the 2 L to start with then add some sweet webbers and you got yourself a pony hahaha just gotta modify the manifold it's designed ʞ©$ɟen stupid, balance pipes n all! Gay so I did the best I could and got more than enough power for a daily banger! Haven't met an n/a 2 liter on carbs that'll come near! I got eaten by a gemi with a 2.4 rodeo motor hahaha but yeah he pulled over to tell me that I was quick hahaha Quote
springersrolla Posted March 21, 2013 Report Posted March 21, 2013 nice ride mate! you should reco your head and slap it on an 18r bottom, thats what they used to do for a bit more compression. sucks bout the valve spring but i don't know why they would be different. go all out get ya head reco and off ya go Quote
SimonM Posted March 21, 2013 Author Report Posted March 21, 2013 Looking at this: http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/hackham/cars-vans-utes/rt104-toyota-corona/1015972186 But not keen on regoing with a non-stock engine. Cops 'round here would tear it apart. Quote
SimonM Posted March 30, 2013 Author Report Posted March 30, 2013 Stripped the paint off the rocker cover and resprayed the radiator. Rocker cover is coming back off next week and going in a molasses bath then being painted. Quote
