hey, ive got a 4K with a 5 speed, and there is a small leak from where the trans bolts to the engine. not sure what it could be. could someone please help me. is there some sort of seal that could need replacing? thank you :)

Either the engine rear main seal, or the gearbox input shaft seal.

 

Probably the engine rear main though.

alright, is that easy to replace? guessing you would have to take the gear box out?

is it a big problem? or would I be able to leave it as it is?

yeah gotta take the gearbox out, flywheel and clutch off.

 

The rear main seal sits around the crankshaft and seals against crank case.

 

i dunno what engine this is, but the 4k will look pretty simliar

The thing in the middle with all the bolt holes is the crank shaft (bolt holes are flywheel bolt holes). and the rubber thing around the edge is the seal you replace.

 

howeever, be VERY carecful you do not scratch the crankshaft surface, or the block surface, or you will never get it to seal.

if you don't have an engine manual, get one! they are really good for stuff like this.

Well the worst thing is you are losing oil and making a mess of the concrete.

 

I wouldn't put it in the urgent category, but the sooner the better.

I've also seen two K50's with the input shaft seal plate that has a crack from top to bottom.

Both were behind stock 4K's.

I would work out if its gearbox oil or engine oil ,no use making work for you self.

Used gear oil stinks.

But honestly you have way more of a chance it being a rear main crank seal than a gearbox plate crack.

Didn't mean to alarm you just saying I'd seen it before.

 

Aha that's alright! I reckon it could be the engine oil! It's doesnt stink at all!

You will know if its gear oil, its an aweful smell.

Yeh I'm guessing that would be the case! Do you know where I would be able to buy a new one?
