silverra23 Posted August 9, 2014 Report Posted August 9, 2014 Grumble grumble grumble..I hate when parts that should fit don't.... So I have a nice Momo steering wheel I wish to fit to my KE15 Sprinter, as step 1 of its club racing transformation. I bought a SAAS boss kit that says it suits KE10-16 (Part Number is BK39L) It came with the pins in the back to cancel the indicator, so I figured I was on to a good thing. When I went to fit it, I found that it would not slide down the taper on the steering column shaft any where near far enough and it sits a good 10-15mm proud of where it should be. The brass horn ring inside it is in a very different position compared to a stock steering wheel too but let's deal with one issue at a time. Does any one know if the column taper would have differed on an imported Sprinter vs an Aussie assembled Corolla? I would have thought not, but I don't know how else to explain it, other than shite manufacturing!! Any ideas on what I can do to address it.. or does any one have a proven boss that suits a Momo wheel that they might want to part with? Thanks in advance! Adam Quote
Jono.C Posted August 9, 2014 Report Posted August 9, 2014 My brothers ke15 has the same issue.. A wheel that fits my ke10 will not fit his, nor will most of the toyota boss kits I have here.. weird Quote
Feral4K Posted August 10, 2014 Report Posted August 10, 2014 Yep were goin through this on the 10 also!, it came with a genuine saas boss n wheel on it but from the 80s, now any type of wheel we buy for it wont fit the bolt pattern of the boss!?, and out of three we have at home only one suits the bolt pattern but not the column spline?. so to save the ulcers clevo is redrilling the boss that fits the spline to suit new bolt pattern wheel.... B.L.Z.BUB Posted August 10, 2014 Report Posted August 10, 2014 SAAS one fit the KE18 fine. Just my $0.02. Weird there is a difference. Quote
camerondownunder88 Posted August 10, 2014 Report Posted August 10, 2014 Yes there are different steering shafts in KE1X cars.....I have a home made on a lathe boss kit that came in a KE11 I bought stock wheel spline turned down fitted to aluminium etc Worked. But yes shafts are different Quote
Feral4K Posted August 10, 2014 Report Posted August 10, 2014 ive got three that fit the spline but three different bolt patterns for the wheel mounting! ALL GENUINE SAAS! wtf? Quote
parrot Posted August 10, 2014 Report Posted August 10, 2014 I have this very tasteful vinyl SAAS wheel on my KE25. It seems to fit nicely on a KE11 steering column I have spare, and also my KE15. There is a horn contact screwed to it, removed in this photo. I can't see a brand on the boss. You are very welcome to borrow on long term loan if you wish? I doubt I will ever use it, but you never know. Quote
parrot Posted August 10, 2014 Report Posted August 10, 2014 The interweb suggests that KE2x and KE1x are supposedly the same boss. I note the SAAS catalogue has different part numbers for KE1x (the one you note) and BK40L for a KE2x. http://www.shopsaas.com/pdf/saas_bossKits.pdf I pulled the boss off my wheel and the only markings are the numbers 7005. If you google steering boss 7005, it comes up as a Momo adapter for a 928 Porsche! I wonder if it is coincidence or real. Then you could have a fancy Celica twin cam wheel on the AE95 and a Porsche 928 wheel on the Sprinter! Quote
silverra23 Posted August 10, 2014 Author Report Posted August 10, 2014 Well at least I am not going mad if others have had the same issue! Feral4k saas may well have changed which pattern they use over the years. Momo spec is different to Nardi spec for instance. Parrot I will pm you. The borrow will be a good place to start - wanted to do something easy just for winterfest and it's so far not gone to plan! Quote
kickn5k Posted August 10, 2014 Report Posted August 10, 2014 If it were me I'd be upgrading that spear column. Mainly from a safety point of view and the later boss kits seem to fit ok. Can happily check out what's been done on mine at Winterfest. Not sure what one has been fitted, it could be a 30 as it has the key barrel blanked off on the surround. Quote
silverra23 Posted August 11, 2014 Author Report Posted August 11, 2014 See the problem is I am inherently lazy and want shit I can just bolt in and get on with it :) I will come chat thought Stu! I have read in the FAQ that the 20 has a collapsible column that fits I think. Quote
parrot Posted August 11, 2014 Report Posted August 11, 2014 After reading Stu's post yesterday, I spent some time researching it. Seems a KE20 column/steering box bolts in other than need to adapt brackets under the dash. Apparently the pitman arm bolts to the steering box though I think Terryo claimed otherwise. Quote

If thats the case take the original wheel and the boss kit that wont fit to a machine shop and have them figure out and machine the boss kit.. Easier than swapping columns Quote
silverra23 Posted August 11, 2014 Author Report Posted August 11, 2014 That was my plan of last resort. I know excellent machinists who will no doubt come up with a result but it just won't be in the time frame needed for this week :-) Quote
