Still need to get the rust sorted, but before that I'm going to source the front engine mount and make sure I know where the motor is going to mount before that stuff even gets started.

Going by that guide, I have the late RX-4 twin dizzy box with the low mount starter capable of 300hp! :lolcry:

 

Think I might have to stick with it! :lolcry:

 

Is it just a 4 speed?

 

The top pic of the "early GB" Darren posted is a S1 box. The S2 and S3 ones have the shifter up above the output shaft in the same sort of position as the S5 box. >|

 

FYI - another thing to bare in mind while chosing a box is the clutch you're going to use with it. All of the early boxes up until FC's use a 8.5 inch clutch and flywheel. FC onwards have a 9.5 inch clutch and flywheel. Your 12a would have a 8.5 on it.

If you don't want to have to change the flywheel (big arse nut and 230 odd fp of torque!) then you can run a S4/5 turbo box with the 8.5 by using your RX4 BH bolted to a S4/5 turbo box (yes it fits) and a clutch plate with the right spline for the S4/5 box.

Its a 5 speed....

AFAIA RX4's only came with 4 speeds (unless it was a Luce). So you migth have an RX5 5 speed with an RX4 BH.

It has a weird looking gear shift on it.

Has it got an extra shift position to the left of 1st gear?

If it does its a park position and its a TQX import RX5 box.

No extra shift position when I went through the gears.

 

Definitely a 5 speed though. Reverse was to the right and down like normal.

That'll do for now Mick. I'm running a S1 5 speed behind my 13bbp at the moment.

I'd be more worries about what diff you're running than the gearbox. :wub:

My main issue really is the fact that I'm getting the car painted and rust repaired and would rather do it once and not have to make trans tunnel mods later down the track.

 

I'd like to get my hands on an S5 box just to trial fit it and see if it'll sit up in the tunnel or not.

Chuck a "wanted to borrow" add up on ar.com and I'm sure somebody could help you out.
