"short shifter" or proper short shifter? Don't think I'll be heading down that avenue for awhile yet, for one I don't have any more money whatsoever, and for another I really don't want to change gearboxes again...
-
The 4A boxes aren't quite the same, but I suppose if I can't seal this box up (I managed to get the last box to more or less stop leaking - yay for silicone, and lots of it :)) then I may consider one. If I do go with a 4A T50 then I'll need to cut a new hole in my floorpan, cut & shut my tailshaft and maybe custom gearbox crossmember. More work than I'd like really. But at least then I can get a short-shifter :)

No. Can you believe, even with Hal, NOBODY seems to have gotten any photos or footage (apart from on my own camera that I specifically asked someone to take photos)? I mean, okay fine Pinky is a little boring, but I would have thought maybe Hal would have been a little more interesting :) I can, however, say that Hal is a weapon :) It goes around the pan *SO* fast it's not funny!

Sideways? See, big grin on chick in passenger seat, Hal makes chicks happy :)

Grimwolge: Yes, all TA22 T50 hybrids. I only know of one other person running this combo, and both of his have leaked too. It seems that although lots of people say that it bolts on and that all T50 boxes are interchangeable, this doesn't seem to be the case :)

No, it leaks all the gearbox oil out from the bottom, sort of where the bellhousing meets the box. Even with big thick gasket paper and a shiteload of blue goo it still leaks anyway.

If you want bigger leads to go Qld Ignition Leads, they did mine and they do a good job on the spot for a good price :)

Well, I think I've done it, I've set a new record. 10 hours in total to replace the f**king gearbox. I've now got all 5 gears (yay), but I've also got about 1 litre of gearbox oil on my garage floor, this one - like all the others - is leaking like a sieve. In fact, it's leaking the worst of the lot :) Maybe I'll just leave my shifter boot off so that I can top up the gearbox oil everytime I take it down the road... And there I was, I thought we found the solution to the leaks, oh well, guess not :)

Yes I have thought about ripping the whole engine out again but in my case that would require me taking the bonnet, grille, bumper, radiator, front stone guard, front splitter and oil cooler out, not to mention having to drain the engine of water and oil and I've got not only high pressure fuel lines (with pressurised fuel) but also about a billion wires to deal with... Plus I don't have my engine hoist anymore (someone's borrowed it) And yes I know how far gearbox oil goes, I have had it all up my driveway for the past few weeks (making for some interesting driving up the driveway) and I now also have it all through the garage when I dropped the gearbox on me yesterday and smashed the plastic container I had holding all my gearbox oil, which is why I also had gearbox oil all over me too. Not happy Jan. Do you mean that you bolt up the gearbox crossmember to the car first and then lift the rear of the gearbox up onto the crossmember? And then lift the front of the gearbox up and slide it forward? Interesting... Except I don't think my geabox would be quite at the right angle then as the engine is already leaning over backwards (resting on my clutch master cylinder reservoir, hmm, maybe that's why it's oval and not round...) I'll give it a go again this afternoon. My attempts to leave work early have not worked, guess I'll just have to work past midnight again tonight. Rear brakes still do bugger all. I couldn't even lock up the rear wheels on the skidpan. Now, THAT's sad.

Hmm, okay need to find another friend who's willing to get dirty today... I might lower the car a little (it's up really high on the jackstands at the moment) so that I don't need to use blocks on the jack to get it up high enough... Tipping the jack over last night that wasn't fun at all...
-
Hmm, I guess not being strong enough to even lift one end of the box up (I have to use 2 jacks) doesn't help :)

Grimwolge: I'm not even doing the clutch, just the gearbox! So a clutch aligning tool isn't really going to help... Escorpse: As in engine crossmember bolts?

Okay. People keep telling me they can swap gearboxes in like... an hour. Or less. Or thereabouts. I've done this 3 times now in the past 2 months, the best I've done is about 4.5 hours. Today has been particularly shit. I've been at it non stop for the past 5 hours. The box isn't even in the car yet. Plus this time the box was actually ready to bolt back in where's the last 3 I've actually had to swap bellhousing etc. I've spent the past hour alone trying to bolt the box to the engine, and then in my frustration and ranting I managed to tip the jack over and drop the box on top of me, that hurt. I give up for tonight... Am I missing something HUGE here? It should be simple, take off bolts, take box out, take new box, put on bolts, finish. Is there a trick to aligning the box to the engine so that it slides in? Every single time I've swapped boxes apart from the top two bolts on the bellhousing (that I can't reach) this has taken the longest. The quickest I've been able to line up the box and the engine has been a good half hour. What am I doing wrong? This box had better be alright, and it had better not break. I REALLY hate changing gearboxes, it has to be by far the hardest thing in the entire car to replace...

I agree. If I had a KE1x I wouldn't put a 4A in it. Just the same, as much as I like the 4A, I wouldn't put it into say... a Camry... Engine must suit car :P

A few of my friends build "Locosts" - they look like Clubmans except they aren't. They all have 20v's and they are all heaps of fun. I wouldn't mind one, but I wouldn't go to all the hassle to fit one into a KE Corolla. If I was building a car from scratch, and I had the option between the 16 and 20v, I'd go the 20 just because they are newer and all that. Rob: First of all, yes you do have a big head :fuzz: Secondly, sadly enough, we both know the only other car (or make of car) faster and probably cheaper than the Dwarf, even though I'm sure no one on this board would like to admit it... But whether you go down that path or not (and I know if I had a chance to do it all again knowing what I know now I would have) the Dwarf will always be an awesome piece of machinery, and a very unique one with heaps of character at that :P

Did anyone here want to drive but didn't have a navigator? The guy who navigated for me last year REALLY wants to do this but doesn't have a car (not ready yet), so if you're in need of a nav let me know ASAP, entries close on Monday!!!

Exaclty. Like most other "hot" small capacity engines, the 20V makes most of it's power up high. Hell, even my stock 100kW 16V is a bit of a pig to drive down low, making most of it's power from about 3500RPM or so. Look at the Honda S2000 motor, or even the motor in the IS200, they're rather boring down low, but relatively quick once you get up into the high revs... All else being equal, a 20V 4AGE will almost always be quicker than a 16V 4AGE, it's about the same throughout the rev range but really shines up high... I think the main problem is a lot of people go through all the extra hassles of getting the 20V to fit, only to find that in 95% of their driving it feels just the same as the old 16V...

Ermm... that's argueable really.

Probably meet at my house (on the way) and then go from there? Will PM you my address.

No, sliding the car will not cause it to roll over (not talking about body roll here, just talking about the car physically rolling over on it's roof). In fact, loss of traction will prevent the car from rolling. It is the sudden stop at the end (like if you hit a kerb, or a ditch, or kitty litter) that causes the car to roll... Of course, if you were driving a double decker bus or something...

andrew: we have venue at Robs house from noon till 5 (so we probably should try to get started as close to noon as possible). I also need to replace my gearbox, but I don't think we'll get that done in that space of time too, so I'll probably just do that later on at my place.
