  1. Springs? As in leaf springs? No, have spent a small fortune on the set on the car now, would probably like to reuse them :) I can buy new pads and wheel cylinders no problems :S Hmm... Might see if I can come down *maybe* this Saturday if you're around...
  2. Jonny has an RA23 or RA40 diff or something like that. I was going to use either a TA22 or R31 diff, although I *may* have found another one apparently with discs and LSD already setup for a leaf spring Corolla (not sure which though)
  3. So is anyone else doing this? My plans so far (and they may change): Go up to Caloundra on Friday sometime, day would be nice but would depend on whether me and nav can get leave, probably stay at the Caloudra City Backpackers (from $17 a night for a dorm bed - max 8 people). This was mainly because I didn't really want to carry all my clothes etc in the car during the event but then later discovered Caloundra is also further south than Woombye... Make the morning drive up to Woombye on Saturday and do the event. Maybe go to the Classics presentation night on Saturday night (maybe), unsure of cost. I'm assuming this would be at the Caloundra Civic Center. Watch rally all of Sunday, and go for the ARC presentation night on Sunday ($45). This is at the Caloundra Civic Center, and they have shuttle buses from the Rydges Hotel where most of the competitors are staying. This is about a 5-10 minute walk from the backpackers :) Mel tells me this is rather fun. Go home Sunday night (if not drunk) or Monday sometime (if can get leave). Rob & Mel - are you going to the Classic and/or ARC presentation night?
  4. If the pinion angles etc are the same then why do they have to make a jig etc etc when changing the mounts (or so I've been told)? Wouldn't it be just a case of aligning the diff at the correct pinion angle to horizontal, putting the mounts on horizontal and welding them on? Sounds fairly simple to me...
  5. Having the two small gears running in opposite directions isn't really a problem, that's easily solvable.
  6. It will work, but I don't think it would work any better than a normal clutch setup. For one thing the only way to ensure it doesn't slip would be to put a fair bit of outward pressure on the inner "wheels", using a big spring or something to that effect. This in turn would cause a fair bit of sideways force on the shafts, possibly causing early failure. Also the outer shell would be prone to distortion under high load probably. The normal clutch setup uses the pressure of two plates pressing flat against each other which is probably a lot more reliable. Think of your idea as the "drum brake" of clutches... It would work, but I can't see it being any more effective or efficient...
  7. No, I'll have to borrow a mate's Daihatsu Mira if I want to take the diff home... :) Else I suppose we could just rip the old drums off Hal and bolt the new ones on at your place (if that works for you), maybe. Or I could just take the drums for now... I'd probably also like the leaf mounts off the diff I think, but not sure if I should leave them on for now so that whoever welds them onto my "new" diff later on would know the pinion angles and what not. I don't know much about that sort of stuff, so don't know...
  8. Tires for what purpose? My Firestone SZ50's (what are on the front of the red car and all round my white one) are $85 each, 185/60R14. If I'm not mistaken Toyo semi slicks are about $190 or so each.
  9. Well, they do work "better", but no they are still rather pathetic... even in comparison to Pinky's handbrake...
  10. Who knows, maybe by next time I'll have big KE55 drums and then I can umm... yeah, do hill starts and stuff :) Must say, the ol KE35 drums have improved a fair bit over the past few days... strange. Still... bigger is better :S
  11. True, but A and L motors are generally cheaper :) Mel's old Datto1600 with the L20 really hammers :S Not to mention the fact that Datto1600's are uber phat :D But I'm still a fan of Hal :) phatphatphatphatphatphatphatphatphatphatphat :)
  12. Wow, Jamie advocating a Datto engine... that's pretty special :)
  13. According to Jamie, YES :) So yes, KE55 drums here I come :S
  14. Oh hehe, cool :) I'll umm... have to try to get myself down there again sometime...
  15. Jamie did a bit of trial fitting of some KE55 drums on a KE30 diff, and as far as we know they do bolt up :) Now I just need to get one more drum and then I'll be swapping them :S Andrew: any luck?
  16. andrew: Ken's Corona isn't on the road, I don't think it's been on the road for awhile... But I've seen the car (in bits and pieces) and have seen photos of when it was in one piece. He has a 4 door shovelnose and a 2 door ute shovelnose, both in bits. Yes he does make custom designs, just depends on what he can reuse from existing designs and how much you are willing to pay :)
  17. I'm running a 4.3 in Hal at the moment and absolutely LOVING it. But yes, Andrew is right - for a stock 4K you'd probably want a 4.11 cause they don't like to rev too much. I'd hate to have a 4.3 in Pinky, driving down the highway would be torture! In a worked 4K like Doug's or Jamie's on the other hand... :)

    4k

I think the K motor has an alloy head
  19. I have heard that the AE86's in Japan (T-series diff) came standard with 4.3
  20. Yea Ken is a bit of a fan of the ol Corona (older ones though, the shovel nose ones), he has a front apron and flares for that model. He'd probably be able to fabricate up something for your Corona if he doesn't already have one. He made mine in 2 hours, it isn't perfect (it's got a few nicks and scraches and isn't straight) but it looks alright for a 2 hour job.
  21. You can, but within reason. All tyre sizes have an "optimum rim size", I don't remember what they are but it wouldn't be too far from what Nick has stated. In fact if I'm not mistaken a 185 goes on anything from a 5.5 to a 6.5 rim, something along those lines. The big craze at the moment in Japan is to majorly stretch tiny tyres on big rims, giving that "bubble" look. They look cool, but not really recommended because you have to run ridiculously high tyre pressures to keep the tyre on the rim...
  22. Mine is a custom one-off one. Adapted from an existing design for a TA22. Ken does have another one that he sells for the Corolla, identical to the one that used to be on Rollie: I think he sells them for about $150.
  23. Yes, he made the front splitter on my car. Am also familiar with Rollie, the red 2 door KE30 that got rolled at QR a few months ago...
  24. He does body kits for all sorts of cars... But yes I have spoken to him about the AE71 sprint spoiler, he doesn't have one but he CAN make one, but will probably cost more than what you want to spend since it'll be a one off...
  25. I'm guessing you aren't looking too hard. A squiz in any of the show car magazines ie Hot4's, FF&R etc should give you quite a few phone numbers to dial. Alternatively give Ken Streeter (0405 691461) a call, he should either have some or be able to make you one.
