quick time lapse of the motor going in. Still can't work out how to properly embed youtube vids..

So the weekend went well. Finally got around to cleaning and painting the firewall, just went with black acrylic as the dynamat etc will be covering it all up. Also cleaned and painted the pedal box and brake booster, so they're both ready to go in. I borrowed a crane off a mate who also owns a ke10, ke70 sedan w/ 5k, webers etc, and another good mate came over and helped me drop the 4age in. Only been waiting 2 years for it to happen.. All went smoothly for my first engine install, I'm pretty stoked how it turned out :y:

Nothing has really happened with the wagon lately, but I picked this up off a mate for a grand. It's a 1979 rn40 hilux. She's pretty rough, with a couple of average paint jobs and some decent rust, but the plan is to tidy it up a bit, make it safe and reliable, and use it as a daily go getter. I've always wanted an older long bed ute, so this may end up as a more serious project in the future. At the moment it's running mikuni carbs off an r1, crane cams electronic ignition, relays for the starter, lights and fan, and a pretty full on sound system. The ignition barrel was shagged so its all run off switches now, thinking I'll return it to stock though. Needs door cards, interior pieces, new headlights and lenses, reverse lights fixing, timing/tune, shifter linkages rebushed, the list goes on. I'm waiting on new steering parts, sway bar bushes and front wheel bearings, so hoping that will make a decent difference to the general looseness. I might get around to a dedicated thread, but I'm just trying to get it reliable at the moment.

Cheers mate, appreciate it. Slowly been chipping away, I wasn't happy with the old fuel rail mounting bracket and how it used zipties, was fairly ugly and quite loose. As usual I wanted something nice and simple, and out of sight as much as possible. I made up some little tabs out of aluminium that I just epoxied to the rail and it's all mounted to the manifold at either end using bolts for the ram tubes. So pretty simple but exactly what I was after, and it's now mounted nice and solid. Would have preferred to have either welded, drilled and tapped, or used jb weld for the tabs, but I'm sure this will suffice for the time being at least.

It's been pretty slow going lately, but I finally got it down off the jack stands and sitting on all four wheels. Been a bloody long time coming, so it's a nice relief. I resprayed the wheel wells with some more sound deadener to cover any overspray that came through from the bay. After messing around trying to find a new lca bush, I found that the Nolathane part was still even thinner than the Superpro one I stupidly trimmed to fit the crossmember. So I kept it as is, returned the Nolathane and swapped it for new castor arm bushes that I overlooked the first time round. I realised that the sway bar end links that I need went with the ke70 front suspension when I sold it all to a mate, so I'll need to grab some new ones. Tad annoying but new parts are always nice. The steering rack went onto the crossmember with new bushes, then that got all got bolted in the engine bay. Soda blasted all the bolts, steering arms and links, gave them a quick polish then then it was ready for the coilovers and steering to all get bolted into place. I'm pretty stoked with how its all looking so far, and the new rotors are yet to go on too. I put the wheels on, gave it a super rough alignment so it was rollable, and lowered her down arse first, then the front. First time sitting on all fours in close to two years. No idea what has taken so long.. Now time for the motor to go in :y:

Very nice work mate! I've got the same rust issues in my seventy wagon, need to bust out the welder. Any tips at all? Keep the updates coming

Haha yeah can't imagine my neighbors were too pleased, sounded like a jet engine and smelt pretty bad out there for a while.. Finally got the blaster set up properly and working well. Using the wet/dry vac to suck out some of the airborne dust, and used some thicker hoses for the gun to prevent the blow outs on the inlet, and also for the siphon as that kept pinching shut. I don't have as much maneuverability inside the cabinet anymore, but for smaller pieces it works a treat. Using baking/bi-carb for grit at the moment. So just more cleaning, polishing and painting really, crossmember bolts were blasted, primed and given a coat of engine enamel, and the linkage is basically done. I just need to make a accelerator cable bracket, and purchase a pulley to go on the linkage shaft like this one. Will be much neater than the current leaver setup. There's a piece of kit that joins & balances the two throttle bodies, with an integrated pulley..buut thats over $250 so will have to wait for now

So I finally got the engine bay all sprayed and cleared. Pretty stoked with how it turned out, still a little bit of over spray but it should buff out. I did accidentally knock the paint on the strut tower on one of the last coats, then got a run trying to cover it with the final coat of clear. Not too happy about that one but I think I can live with it. If not I'll rub it back and shoot some more clear on. I used the extraction fan and that seemed to move a lot of the over spray down and out which certainly helped too
-
Yeah I'm quite pleased with it to be honest, especially after picking the wrong colour a few times. Can finally move forward with the engine bay and get the motor in now. That's not a bad idea actually! I was originally thinking maybe a red pin somewhere, as the engine bay will be a grey/black/red colour scheme. Maybe on the wheels and keep the body clean but we'll see

So I had my 21st last weekend, finally treated myself to a welder and some Milwaukee tools. I got a unimig 175, can weld 0.7mm panel steel to 8mm plate. mig, tig & stick, but it can't tig aluminium. That'll have to wait. I've set it all up but haven't had a chance to muck around with it yet. I'm keen to learn and get stuck into the rust. Sorted out the fuel pump mount, using a nut and bolt on one side, and a decent cable tie on the other. Using a square of dense rubber with self adhesive foam stuck to one side as insulation between the mount and the body, hoping that will be enough. Also picked up 5m of fuel hose from Supercheap, (anywhere else I could have gone for cheaper?) and figured out where the lines will go. Looks like there will be runs of 1.2m plus.. is this a bad idea? should I look into making some new steel lines? Also got around to test spraying those two tins of paint, ended up doing half and half on the rear, with a strip of the first grey remaining in the middle. So after all that I've finally decided to go with the metallic on the left. Bit more interesting, and also has a tinge of gold to it, which I like as a bit of a nod to the original colour. Keen to know what you guys think. Cheers.

Keen to see what you've got planned for this. Much rust? :rocknroll:

Went shopping yesterday and got some rubber and foam for the fuel pump, foam tape for the rest of the blower ducting, and two tins of paint- one metallic and the other just a darker straight grey. So just waiting for some decent weather to do some painting, it's been shocking down here this weekend

I've pretty much got mine all installed already.. Fits quite nicely in the end. Just want to buy a nutsert setup for the fuel pump mount. I got the fuel system with 4age, (out of a sedan, including a 3.5L surge tank ) so I've already swapped over the in tank lift pump and lines from sedan to wagon, installed my new 1L surge, and have the bosch hi flow pump to go in too. Pics in previous posts.

Should do the trick nicely :y: Yeah I was actually after a smaller one, I found a 600ml undercar tank a while ago but could never find it again for some reason. Getting a welder next weekend so could even look into making one that tucks away a bit neater. Pretty excited for that to say the least
-
Yeah I'm real keen to see how it all goes together. I sat the bumper in place a while ago and it seemed to fit so should be all good. And that tank looks like a good idea, never really thought of using one of those. Nice and cheap too. Are you planning on mounting that in the engine bay still? And just wondering about the outlets, I guess it doesn't really matter that the return to the main tank isn't located by itself at the highest point?
-
Yeah mate I sure am, I originally thought I wanted to convert it to the dx front, but the slant grew on me so I decided to keep it. Found a genuine chrome bumper from Thailand, and the end caps were from Germany.. Just hoping it all lines up nicely

I gave the drivers rear quarter and the tailgate a super quick rub back with scotchbrite and masked it all up so I could do a test spray of the paint I already have. I borrowed a mates decent spray gun, dropped the pressure to 35 psi and could tell the difference straight away, even though it was cold and pretty breezy. Was going on real smooth with hardly any overspray. Got me keen. Still need to polish it up, but I'm pretty certain it's a little too light, I'm after a bit darker and deeper. Looks too close to primer I think. Still can't decide whether I want metallic or not, so I'll probably get a can of each and see which I prefer. Can also see the dodgy roofing iron sealing up the back of the car port, need to get some paint on that..
-
Mounted the linkage to the underside of the throttle bodies, need to trim the mounts down and make a bracket for the accelerator cable, but they seem to work fine. Also need to see if I can mount the fuel rail underneath too, is there any reason the injectors can't be fed from upwards, ie. uphill?
-
Yeah sweet, cheers for that. Well this is the bracket that came with the pump, seems to fit the bill, has a decent rubber lining, just not sure if its a bit too hard/dense. It should be alright, also going to use rubber around the bolts to minimise noise transfer. As for the fuel lines, I definitely need to do some research. I get the basics, but unsure when it comes to return lines, do I need one from the reg and fuel rail? I really have no clue, so any input would be much appreciated

You got me keen so I finally got under the car and started to work it out today. Its going behind the fuel tank, in front of where the bumper goes. There's a nice channel behind there, but it wasn't quite wide enough so I had to remove some metal from the lip of the fuel tank, and also the support under the car that the tank bolts up to. Needed to cut off one of the surge tank mounts as well, so I'll just have to figure something out for that side The main pump will tuck up there too, and I'm hoping there's enough room above the fuel tank to route all the hoses out of sight. Just sticking with regular efi hose at this point. Can anyone see anything wrong with this setup? Planning to have a filter between the lift pump and surge tank, check valve and filter after main fuel pump, then reg in the fuel bay. Does anyone have any advice/recommendations on fuel regulators? Haven't looked into them yet. Also need some advice on the best way to minimise the noise from the fuel pump too, just lots of rubber/foam? Ollie.

Okay I got the radiator all finished by trimming the bolts and making the spacers to go between the shroud and rad. Went and bought a metre length of 10mm rod as the original plan was to cut them to length, and drill the centre out for the bolt to pass through. I soon realised that without a metal lathe, or suitable vice for an already dodgy drill press, it was going to be hard going to get a straight hole. Had a look around and found a piece of metal tubing that was close enough to the diameter I needed. Came from the charcoal canister, not sure on the legalities of not running one so will have to check that out. I cut 4x 25mm lengths and it worked nicely. Stops the lip of the rad from bending in, and keeps it all solid

I'm not usually a fan of louvres, but I'm really liking this one, especially with the mods you've done. And the car in general, looking awesome. Sweet to see you still adapting things to fit on this build too, always keen for more updates 👍
-
Yeah they're certainly not the best.. I've got a mates gun to borrow at the moment that I haven't used, not sure on brand but they said it's good. I'll drop the pressure and see how it goes. What do you use in the way of water traps and regulator? I have the reg on the compressor, and had a reg + trap on the gun, but it was real awkward so just used the trap in the end. Definitely going to do some more reading and watching, and got a few spray painters I know so I'll hit them up for some advice. Yeah unfortunately most pictures on the net are of a sedan, so I just really need to get under there to sort it out. Think I was afraid to grind the mounts, but now I'm more than happy to adapt things to fit. Are there any major do's and more importantly don'ts with setting up a fuel system in general? More worried about surge tank placement and the routing of lines
-
Cheers mate, I appreciate it, nice to know people out there actually read this haha. I tell you what though I wouldn't mind a bit of a break from this cold! To be honest, I'm not even sure about the shroud, I got a mate to design and make it for me, I just had to mount the fans and bolt it to the rad. I am learning everything as I go, so I only really work things out as I get to it. Guess it was the plan from the beginning, I had very limited/basic knowledge of cars before I started, so I wanted to find out how it all works and goes together. I may have to cut some holes or slits in the shroud, we'll see how it goes. With painting, think I'm up around 50-60psi on a mates advice, think I haven't been using enough thinners either, struggling to get a nice wet coat. I've been planning to set aside an arvo to test different pressures/ratios/techniques etc. Practice makes perfect. It is just a Supercheap gun after all, definitely getting a new one before I paint the rest of the car. Any suggestions? And unfortunately nothing has happened with the fuel system yet, got a bit frustrated as I wasn't real sure on what I was doing, so I'd like to see some other setups to get some ideas. Guess it'll come down to where it fits too. I was planning to have it all hidden under the car near the fuel tank, just so there's as little in the engine bay as possible. But we'll see how that goes too, just need to get under there..

I got the shroud mounted to the radiator tonight, and it seems like it'll all be solid. Just need to trim the bolts down but it's all pretty much done, can finally tick this one off the list
