Ok so a bit more work on this little customisation of the tailgate over the last couple of days, made up the inner panel that will hold the rego plate. Well hell yes its starting to look like something and very cool. Just need to fully weld it to the tailgate now ,hopefully slowly and with minimal warpage/heat.Then skim it all over with bog and sand back to smooth with the correct shape etc.. Enjoy the pics cheers Terry

Hi all.... Here to revive this seemingly dead thread of the ke38 van do up for my daughter... Yep its been a long while since any work has been done, since i was last here i have moved house (out on my own now) and the ke38 van is now under cover and slowly I'm getting back into doing some work on it,money is the issue evn more so now tho that wont stop me from doing what i can ,when i can. So just lately i have been playing with the idea of doing this lil project as a custom.Eg bumpers removed side windows filled with sheet steel and a bubble window added at the rear of the side etc etc.. Have just recently removed the right fender n door to sand back and paint the door on the inside and the door jamb (opening) as i want this to be an all purple in the right places (not a closed door respray)...Also had a play with the tail gate as its in sad condition and needs straightening with the good ol bog a fair bit...enter the darkside of customising...lol...tailgate is now on its way to a smoother look and a recessed (frenched..sunken) rego plate... As i now no longer have ready access to a computer it may be a while before further updates, tho the work will go on slowly but surely.. enjoy the pics Terry

Nothing much to report on progress.. Went to Adelaide for 5 days for clipsal 500,also been busy going to car shows/drags etc...Along with Qld weather being shite...Tho that ugly rusty in places roof is looking better in the last couple of days..tho in need of purchase a decent spray gun..tired of those crap supercheap guns.. Stay tuned folks cos this rebuild isnt over until the day of roadworthy n rego for Emma.. Cheers Terry

Ok with so many things needing doing and not lots of dollars to throw at it at moment (going on lil trip) decided to sort n fix some stuff i have worked already..seems like go over a few times to get right..but thats cars.. Also started on the roof..now this is a big job due to the fact of the surface rust imbedded in areas in the metal.. Will clean up ok in the end tho, just lots of work. Cheers Teza reworked this area due to deep scratches in the paint..somewhat fussy..is me Back to bare metal and offending surface rust spot

Ok so got back out there thursday arvo for a few hours, decided to take the front apron off.Now i new it was rusty but far out.. So have the metal version of swiss cheese to repair, yep weld the holes up etc..Will also make the radiator panel all pretty too don't worry.. Hada chance to sand back the lower door repairs also while i was messin about, before the rain came again.. So yep little bits at a time, will get me there eventually.. Cheers Teza40

Progress slow this week,Bris vegas weather has been sorta shite again and I'm feeling old (lol). Tho have managed to wet sand back the underside of bonnet and give light coat of primer, bonnet will need some topside bog work to sort out some low spots. Not overly fussed as the areas the lows are in will most likely have the silver paint over them. This is not or never intended to be a show car.. Hopefully the weather improves for the weekend for more serious effort.. Side note: so far outlaid around the $220 mark in materials to get this far.. cheers Teza40

The end of the sunday effort... Stripped the topside of bonnet back to bare metal,is now wearing a heavy coat of etch primer.has got a few low dings n dents etc that i will fix along the way. Also gave the gaurd a coat of etch primer, will do until i get the hi fill primer during the week. Also as a side note...Emma sat for her learners last week and got it first time with only 2 questions wrong..well done darling..now get the confidence for some wheel time.. Cheers Terry

Sunday 6th march...corolla log.. Ok the bonnet i bought a few years ago to replace the original is now sad and rusted on the inside front edge,i have had another laying around for years and have decided to put it to good use. Tho it is in need of some minor work also rust in the front outer and inner edge,(minor compared to the other bonnet)...so that was todays lil effort so far, along with tack weld of the inner and outer skins together as the two had seperated (pics),also the first sand back of the left gaurd, more work to do there..need to get some more hi fill primer (the saviour of all bog repairs)...

Hi ya...Well unfortunately my daughters (yes i have two) live the otherside of bris vegas to me,so as of yet havent been up here for a weekend..so it`s dear ol dad putting in the hard yards..labour of love..tho I'm sure given the chance Emma would have a go at the bogging and sanding..there`s still time lol...good experience for the young ones for sure.. Ahhhhh ha retro cool is the look we going for..still throwing paint schemes about in my head tho...stripe styles etc.. Cheers Terry

Ok our crap bris vegas weather is back.. Tho managed during the week to do some work (damage) on the left front guard,it had rust holes behind the corolla badge.so cut a sizeable section out and put a new piece of metal in. Not without massive warpage tho..oh well heat is a killer on thin metal. All good and can be fixed easy enough tho having to take the fender off the car to do so (can see the penetration on the inside). At bog stage (saturday) and bogged other areas in need also.. Glad to have got some more work done whilst the weather threatened again... Enjoy the pics Cheers Teza

Hi ya Jon..oh fella that last bit can be taken so many ways..lol..

Hey there you are stranger..thanks for the welcome back and ah yes I'm sure once the girl gets confident enough.I will persuade to be a part of a rolla club cruise,be nice to driven around in the nana mobile instead of being the pilot..lol.

Hi and thankyou 67Rolla-Ken.. Well yes it has helped with the colour choice by having started paint before rust repairs, bit of a tease i guess..lol.. Tho as i explained in my 2nd post car is being prepped outside.. So have gone about this a bit unorthodox yes,car is being preped outside in the weather elements and the way things have been in qld so far this year, very unstable.A WELL THAT GOES FOR EVERY WHERE LATELY REALLY. So just to have the primer covered up (as primer is pourus and likes to suck in moisture) i got top coat so as to give it a thing coat which also helps me see how straight i got the panels.. Rust repairs are minimal really and the paint isnt yet to final top coat stage..so i am able to go over areas and make sure things are all good before going the whole hog..Time and dollars are a factor also..so far i have been able to get onto this project at a good speed, but if for some reason the weather turns foul,i have no cover for the work i have done.. Previous experience has led me to think get paint on it now..i have an austin a40 in primer and under cover, and i have to do it all again as surface rust has broke through the primer..and that suxs better than a hoover... Cheers Terry

Hi ya Phatke30.. Nice to hear I'm not alone in the blue car curse..lol.. Ok the welder i have is a gasless mig, trade tools recomended and does alright..is good for up to 270 amps i think. Has multi settings in amps and with thin metal i have found it easier and best to use on number one setting,so yes very low amps. With this welder i have taught myself on thin metal, that it is hard to do weld runs,so i do spot weld type welds.Which as you noted usually leaves the bulk of the weld topside.there is however enough heat and penetration that if you hold the trigger too long it will do a blow hole for ya...so the trigger is held on for like maybe anything up to or more than 10 sec intervals. Yes with the amount of heat always get distortion, the only way to combat that is to take longet to weld area..EG let metal cool longer between welds..tho I'm impaitent enough as it is..lol..or to use the wet rag system, yest again impaitence of mine. I accept that any weld i do will need some form of bog to final finish it,as i said i have taught myself how to use this unit..some days are better than others..but ya get pretty good at filling blow holes in time :) Cheers Terry

Hi ya..thanks..no i don't think its odd that yourè male and like purple, i like the colour myself. The seats I'm not sure if they are AE80/82 they were fitted to this ke38 wagon i bought many years ago.. Ican tell ya they fitted straight in (probably on ke rails) and are far more comfy than the original buckets.. Ihad thought ke70 myself, tho I'm not up to speed on them..

Todays lil effort...drivers door rust repair in rear lower corner... Just a light skim of bog to finnish it off now..happy with the fact it has good metal there now.. Cheers Terry
