  1. Was an awesome day out. Good to meet everyone who came :bash:
  2. Something else that works is carby cleaner :rocknroll: blew loads of stuff out of mine and it ran better for it.
  3. Awesome work man! Few little mods go a long way with these cars. Should be easy as to come by some rear twinky disks and a stocko strut top bar. Ae102 disks and calipers bolt right on too. As far as springs/struts go theres usually some around in forum classifieds. Great to see this car develop :rocknroll: Oh and if you haven't yet, putting in fresh plugs and oil makes a great difference.

    7afc

Yes and no. Its my daily but I can largely do without it. I still borrow my parents car every now then when I need to and uni is within walking distance. As I say the 4afc conversion seems quite straight forward so I might just go with that. I'll keep doing my research though. Cheers for the reply. Its good food for thought :(

    7afc

first of all *dons flamesuit* I'm not sure my 4ac is long for this world so I'm looking for simple replacement. I don't want the hassle of a 4age conversion. I know 4afc's are almost a straight swap except for a few little things which makes it a promising avenue. But I would feel more comfortable about the conversion if the engine was a 1.8L. So I was wondering how much it would take to carby a 7afe, put it in my rolla and how practical and costly this would be. I'm not too sure about the difficulty of fitting a 7afe into an ae82 period without worrying about fuel lines, ecu or looms etc. I figure there is 2 ways to go about it. 1. If a 4age head goes on a 4afc/4ac and a 4age head goes on a 7a block then I figure it should be possible to put a 4afc head on a 7a. This would mean I could use an original carby manifold, a lengthened 4afc exhaust (clearances pending) and the 4afc dizzy to take care of the spark. Theres also the question of timing chain. Would I be optimistic in thinking there could be some way to use a 7afe timing chain? Also would compression or valve clearances be an issue? 2. Then there's the other option of just using the whole 7afe. That way can use the original exhaust manifold and not have to worry about any engine internals. But would need to fab up a carby manifold of some description. Also then theres the question of spark. Spark only ecu is out of the question cost wise. It appears the 4afc and 7afe dizzies are mounted the same. Any chance I could swap them or the internals that I need? Also with the 7afe being taller than a 4ac, could I run into clearance problems with a carby on the side. I'm pretty sure they all run c50 transmissions. I'm pretty nervous about doing any of this but on the other hand I think it will be a good learning experience that I'm looking forward to in a way. I'm not looking for a world beater, just something reliable that I can thrash daily and have it keep coming back for more :o Any constructive comments appreciated. Same with anything I may not have thought of (thats relevant). Yes I've considered 4ages :(
  6. 87 rolla would be an ae82 btw, so is it an ae92 or an 87 rolla? Apparently clearances are tight if you do actually get it in there. Also these cars have big understeer without the extra weight. As people say, result probably isn't worth the effort.
  7. Should spray the rims around the windows black too, like the csx's have. Would suit the rest of the paint job in my opinion :)
  8. Fark, nice work man. I own one of these too. Just about everything I've done has been wrecker spec or discounted through net traders :) Just curious though, why not learn about mechanics on it as well as the whole detailing side of things? Its pretty much why I was happy to buy my car. Just so I could get some driving and mechanical experience. If I screwed up either I knew it was a cheap fix or at least I didn't waste too much on it in the first place.
  9. There are holes in the firewall already. You need to remove the brake vacuum line and reattatch it because it will foul the mounting at the firewall. If you have a standard suspension rolla you should really notice the handling difference. Front sits a lot flatter through the corners. I dunno about the sedan but I bought twincam swaybars for my single cam seca and found they were identical to the stock ones on there already ;)
  10. I have a 4ac seca and am also wondering what to do. I like the look of the seca's and there's only about 20kgs difference between the seca and the hatch. Its a lot of effort to swap stuff over especially when (I'm guessing) its in a perfectly good car. Is the c52 (twincam) box the same as the c50 (4ac/4af box)? Carby 4ag's setups usually end up costing just as much, if not more than the efi versions as you need to start worrying about spark only cpu's etc. and you end up with a result that might have a similar top end power but not as much getting up there. Good luck finding a stocko bigport rolla these days with decent kms that hasn't been thrashed to high heaven. If you're not mechanically minded then conversions or rebuild costs usually make it a not very realistic option. It might not seem like the cheap way but try and find someone who's already rebuilt their 4age or put in a fresh engine. Just be weary that they haven't cut corners. You usually get what you pay for. Good luck :jamie:
  11. Just the standard aus delivered 101 brakes. I've seen that thread before, its on pretty much every rolla/toyota forum heh
  12. Yeah I'm down at u pull it quite a lot, I've got an ae82 but most of the mods I want to do are with bits from other toyotas. Would be nice to find some ae101 brakes and a manual shifter, maybe a c52 box or some newer factory rims. But yeah, you'll never see any of those down at u pull it :)
  13. Can anyone recommend some good wreckers in Adelaide for rolla or toyota bits? Doesn't have to be toyota only. Cheers, 200boy
  14. Your box is a c50, as far as I know the only thing you need to put a weber on is an adapter plate (don't quote me). I got my plate for roughly $40 from sprint auto. Haven't put mine on yet though. An exhaust would be a good idea. If you read around the toyota forums you can find some good info. It'll basically tell you the exhaust manifold is bollocks and so is the airbox. Put on a weber, get an exhaust (with extractors, otherwise remove butterfly in stock manifold) and remove all unnecessary emissions gear. With the age of these engines, you'll notice the difference a good service will do it. One of the best mods I've done is change all the fluids heh. 200Boy
  15. My rolla had a month left. Also don't drive like a tool and you shouldn't need to worry about crashing. I think the cars are a good format for less experienced drivers, being fwd. Less fun than a rwd when they're underpowered but you're less likely to slide sideways into anything :y: I don't think you'd have to worry too much about understeer with 4ac power
  16. Short answer: yep :y: but what would you expect to hear from a rolla forum :y: Although for that price you could probably do better than the model you're looking at. Also I wouldn't buy one in an automatic but thats just me. I got my 85 rolla for $600. Although it looks like I got it for that price I have tinkered with it and it runs very nicely. There are plenty of the ae82s in wreckers so yes parts are plentiful. It was a good car to develop my manual driving in and as I already said in another thread, I would definitely recommend these cars to any inexperienced car enthusiast. Good thing about rolla's though is they come with the toyota reliability. Mine is 320000kms young and it still goes great, doesn't blow any smoke at all. I'm sure it could happily see 400,000. Also the economy of the little 1.6 is a bonus. One question though, what exactly are you looking for in a car? Sounds like its for a child of yours and you're expecting them to crash it or drive it till something breaks :y: In that case a corolla is perfect. European car parts will always be rarer and pricer than common locally made cars for parts and repairs. Corollas will be reliable, can take loads of thrashing and just keep taking it. Also you have us friendly forum people to help you out with any problems you might have along the way :) Good luck mate
  17. Pretty sure yeah. In an old toymods thread a guy who rallied an ae71 (I think) recommended removing it. The e.g.r system recirculates exhaust through the carby and the butterfly in the exhaust restricts flow. Is there a different reason when people put on weber's they rarely hook up the emissions stuff? I don't really see how removing the emissions gear would be any worse on a stock system, than with an after market carb. I mean who puts on a weber and hooks up the e.g.r system :sob:
  18. Not that I would consider doing this, but if one wanted to, could someone tell me a bit more specifically about removing all the performance restricting emissions stuff or rendering it useless. Stuff like what to block or what to remove or what to do with the exhaust butterfly etc. Thanks in advance, 200Boy.
  19. Thanks for the replies guys. To KE30_KE35_KE55, is there any benefit in doing it the way you did as opposed to just putting in a 4afc? I read some of the extra things you had to do using that method in another thread. Thanks also for the reply via pm. I think it would be good info for everyone to read in this thread. "Don't try for any extra lift on the cam as the pistons already have cut outs as they run so close, a simple worn timing belt at high revs and it could be bye bye engine. A regrind for longer opening would be ok. I found a few valve springs were suffering loss of unsprung height. A lot of benefit can be made from porting and polishing as well." Does this mean I might run into issues with head shaving? If so is there any way of getting around this i.e. using different pistons? Well now I'll get into the nasty stuff, any benefit in using 4age bits in a 4afc? Someone modifying a 4ac was recommended to use 4age rods, after market rod bolts, and double valve springs. They said they wanted to use the 4ac crank and not a 4age one because it had less rotating mass, so would using a different crank or any of these mods be worth while in a 4afc? Also what about 4age extractors, clutches, flywheels or gearboxes? p.s. I might be tired and not considering budgeting or grammar at this time of morning :sob: 200Boy
  20. Haha have I told you guys I love you lately? :no2: These have been just about the only helpful responses I've gotten that haven't prompted me to explain why I'm thinking about doing this ;) Heres a bit more detail I put on another forum anyway: I have done some research over a few forums. I found I need a different top engine mount on the drivers side, lengthened exhaust to the front of the engine, the original lead from the coil to the dizzy and that the ae82 radiator outlet wont line up. I'm unsure if an ae92 radiator will fit in my car. I found the 4ac and the 4af use the same box and that apparently you can use the original 4ac loom. I was unsure if there was any 4afe internals or anything that would readily transfer to the 4afc that would be an improvement. I read they have higher compression so I thought maybe I could just use a 4afe and a 4afc inlet manifold if that would actually work. Also in some other efi/carby model cars its an improvement to use the carby model cam in the efi engine and I wondered if that could be the case. Because the 4afe went on to the ae101 as well I considered they might have made some worthy improvements that could maybe work with the 4afc. I'll gladly hear opinions of mods to these engines if they're fairly inexpensive although they're virtually impossible to find because everyone takes the 4age route. If I find this conversion is going to be overly expensive or complicated then I will happily sell my car and buy an sx outright. I'm not looking for a world beater, I'm just cheap with a lot of time on my hands and wanting to build a setup that I can reliably thrash. If building a hybrid out of the 4a engines is my best bet then that'd be ace. Thanks heaps guys, 200Boy :bash:
  21. Hey guys, if anyone knows much about either of these engines or whats involved in putting one in an ae82 then could they contact me via email or msn at [email protected]. Please no 4age or boat anchor comments etc. although having said that I'm sure some smartarse will now. ;) Cheers 200Boy.
