  1. Cheers for the advice! I finally found out that the gasket hadn't worn away but was stuck onto the metal reallllly well. I was sitting there for ages with a blade getting all of it off. This is what it came out like.. could probably go for a bit longer if you guys think it's necessary? Once I got the gasket off, the thermostat came out easily. Could you please elaborate on that a bit? I'm not aware of how I pulled it out to be honest. :rocknroll: Cheers!
  2. Where is the thermostat?? Where is the thermostat gasket?? :jamie: I can assume that the gasket naturally wore away haha... but the thermostat... is it that thing in the middle? If so, is it supposed to come out? Can it come out?? The old thermostat housing... yum. :rocknroll:
  3. Clamps were $2 each from servo and Thermostat Housing was $27.61 from Coventrys (I must have got the trade price with the thermostat and gasket!) Any tips on how to install this baby would be great! Or just advice on what NOT to do... i.e. if there's anything to do first, etc...
  4. I took my chances on a ke70 being advertised for $1800... I ended up getting it for $1500 and it's one of the best condition corollas that I've seen. So I'd say have a look.
  5. Do you mean: it's not safe for something to hit the distributor OR in the photo there is nothing touching the distributor that will harm it? God I'm gonna get some brownie points for this! :rocknroll: Haha. I woke up really early like 4.40 this morning cause of a freaky dream. I ate and then sat on rollaclub for a while then went out to the shed, put on the radio and started putting the bits back together. I had money so I figured I'd take dad's car and go to Coventrys and Veale auto parts. I got a ke70 bypass hose ($8.00), two hose clamps for said bypass hose($1.20 each), 2 (bigger) hose clamps for replacing those weird clips since they look gay and are a bitch to get off (@HRV-00S I used a screwdriver haha) ($1.80 each), thermostat ($11.94) and thermostat gasket ($2.02), 10l of demineralised water ($14.00 - EXPENSIVE!) and Tectaloy Muckowt ($8.00). I didn't know the brand that makes it.. I was searching on google and couldn't find it for ages haha. So, I'm going to take a picture of the thermostat wherever the hell it is haha and post it up! :jamie: Then hopefully you guys can help me out with how to install the new thermostat (and new gasket if I need it?). :y: I think I need a new one of these... haha: Oh, also... what's better for the radiator... coolant or demineralised water? Cheers!
  6. Question: Can the pipe (on the left hand side) in this picture touch the distributor (the distributor has the 4 spark plugs going into it, right?)? It has a rubber casing in the middle of it if you look at it closely. I'm just wondering if it's meant to sit against the distributor to prevent some sort of electrical mishap? At the moment the pipe's metal touches the distributor.. just wondering what to do in this situation; if it's fine to leave it the way it is. Cheers.
  7. Got these hoses off and cleaned them... There's just one more hose left and I gotta pick up a bypass hose and then I can test it out! Thanks for all your help, guys! This is the first semi-mechanical thing that I've done on my own (with your help) and it was pretty fun although annoying at times. :rocknroll:
  8. Ok so I'm nearly finished unclogging the last pipe that leads to the tap. The ones going from the firewall should be fine because I mentioned in one of my earlier posts that I squeezed the top radiator hose and coolant came through the tap with no problems. Correct me if I'm wrong pleeease because I need to know haha. I think one reason why the flush didn't work was because when I was trying to take off the pipes waayyy earlier on in the afternoon, I pulled the lever that operates the hot/cold switch off of the tap because I thought I was going to be taking the whole tap off. But, before I disconnected it, it was in the hot position because the tap lever was as far out as it could go (which is the hot position in a ke70). So I guess that wouldn't have mattered actually haha... There was and is a lot of crap throughout the hoses... Edit: I'm also going to buy demineralised water tomorrow if it's cheap and use that to test everything out once I get the hoses back on. If it's working I can drain the water and put coolant in... That way it's cheaper I hope. What's bluemaxx?
  9. I'm reallllly pissed off. I can't get the hose that goes from the radiator to the heater tap off because one single friggon bolt is rounded (the one next to that wire). So I'm sticking a f^^^ing toothbrush down the pipes trying to get this shit out. Sooner or later I'm just going to bring the hose into the engine bay and hold it at one end cause ze patience, she is running out... I dunno how to fit a new thermostat hey. I'm having enough trouble getting diahorrea out of a hose. :rocknroll:
  10. So you mean that I'd take them out in the engine bay... I wouldn't need to go inside the car? If so then I think I get what you're saying. Nope it's just average temperatures hey. The guy who I bought it off only had it for a few months... the granny/grandpa before him had it for all of it's life so maybe they never used it? Haha.
  11. Ahh crap I was on the second page... I didn't realise there was a third one haha sorry. So yeah, I read the manual and found the drain cock... %$^# it takes a long time to drain it... I figure I'll put on the new hose clamps and check the hose tonight before I drive it anywhere. I was driving to get the hose clamps and radiator flush and when I parked I figured I'd check the hoses and see if they were ok since the fiddling around. The bypass hose was leaking or something and was spraying coolant all over the engine so I've ordered a new bypass hose from Veales and will get it tomorrow morning in Dad's car or something. I'll try everything you said except this: "Same with the heater core, re-move the two hoses at the fire wall jam the hose in the passenger side (out let) and see if you can't get some flow happening. Might want to check the thermostat isn't full of crud too." cause I don't know what you mean haha.
  12. I'm having a bit of trouble finding out how to flush the radiator. I can't see underneath it so I can't find any plug etc.
  13. Ok. So I drain the coolant... and fill it with clean water. Can this be tap water or does it have to be sterilised? I've got the nulon radiator flush & clean thank god. It says this on the label: Add contents to radiator and turn on heater. Run engine for 20 minutes to 1 hour. Stop engine and allow to cool. Flush system thoroughly with clean water. It says to add water afterwards, whereas you say to drain the coolant and then add water and then the flush... ahh! Haha. Edit: I added the whole bottle in without draining it first or whatever. I'm still waiting for another 10 or so minutes but the air from the heater doesn't seem to be getting hot... which is kinda gay, but I guess I should just wait until I flush the radiator and put new coolant in, eh? Oh yeah, I also got hose clamps. :lolcry: The 1 that I've put on looks all new and shinnnnny!
  14. Radiator flush, eh? Flush or two or three? :lolcry: Won't that mean that my radiator will have no coolant? Isn't it dangerous to have a car on with no coolant? Haha. Edit for your edit: Will do... factor looking things? You mean those pin things? How do I get them off?
  15. Blockeeeed! :lolcry: I got the hose off with a flat head screwdriver and my hands of steel ( heh... ). I got some on my finger! Gross! It smells like... clay and female juices. It's blocked. I shrunk myself to the size of a small insect and went in with a bucket and a toothbrush. Haha nah I went in with a toothbrush and thought it might just be congested towards the end of the hose... but I scooped a bit out and I'm pretty sure the whole f^^^ing hose is blocked. What do I doooo?! I can't take the hose off cause of those weird clips.. I dunno how to get them off. Also there's this wire thing that attaches to a metal clip just below the hose... the wire goes to the firewall and looks like it's pretty important... I'm lost guys! Edit: The wire that attaches below the hose: Another Edit: I squeezed some huge radiator hose (haha) and the clayish crap got flushed out of the heater tap, followed by radiator coolant. I honestly didn't think that would happen haha.. I was expecting the hose that went from the radiator (or whatever) to the heater tap to get flushed but either way I'm pretty sure the tap is clean now. All I gotta do is clean the hose that goes to the tap from the radiator (or whatever). The only thing is... how can I be sure the blockage doesn't go further down into the radiator??
  16. Hmm... Hose clamp? Doubt I have one of those. I'll get one before I cut it off if I can't get the hose off. I'll go try to get the hose off with something sharp now. :lolcry: Keep ambulance on stand-by for me, would ya?
  17. Cheers for the fast response! I rang up Repco just then. The guy said he has a universal "5/8" heater tap... I hate imperial or whatever so I asked him what it'd be in metrics and he said 16mm... he said it was 50 bucks. Sound about right?
  18. Ok I tried to pull some hoses off but they're stuck on well! I couldn't get this one off after unscrewing the clip enough to make it loose (as in yes I got the clip loose, but the hose is like fused onto the pipe or something :lolcry: ): And this one has a weird-arse clip that I'm unsure of how to loosen/remove: Any help is appreciated. Edit: Just rang up some wreckers and even a toyota wrecking place and NONE of them have heater taps for a ke70... Might have to buy one off someone on here if mine is screwed..
  19. Sounds easy enough... Are they hard to get back on though? I know they have those weird clips and they look pretty tight... I'll keep a bucket handy or something for when I get it loose enough to get it off. Is it best to get a used tap from wreckers? Cheers.
  20. Ok... I tried it out and got her to pull it to hot and cold and the lever does move so I'm guessing the tap is broken or something? Is it easy enough to take apart myself or should I just get another?
  21. Ahhh I've seen that before! Cheers! :lolcry: Will try it out with the gf.
  22. Cheers for that. So I would check if the switch is broken at the tap end in the engine bay? How can I test if it's broken? What cable/switch would I look for? I know this might be common sense to you guys but I've never dabbled with heaters before. :no2: If you're talking about the interior, then all thanks go to the first owner (a granny) for getting it this far. :lolcry: I do try to keep it clean though. Cheers for all your help so far.
  23. I'm not doubting that I'll probably be able to do it haha.. it's just that I need the time and need to make sure I know what the heater tap/core actually is! Haha. Here are some photos I got just so I can figure out what parts they are: Is the tap the first picture (upper right corner) and the core the second one?
  24. Would you i.d. it for me if I got a picture? I'm pretty sure I know what the big black box is though... it's right under the glove box right? Hahaha what does that mean? I'm going to get angry and punch something? I don't get it haha. I don't watch much Star Wars.
  25. No haha. Is that why in my old KE70 which had a working heater, a bubbling noise occurred when the heater hadn't been used and had just been turned on? If the bubbling noise that I mentioned above is how it should be... then I guess the tap is not working because it doesn't even make a bubbling noise haha. Yeah... My door light doesn't work. Stereo sounds ok though. So I need to take the dash off (to check all of the things you said) if the heater is broken? Cheers.
