Okay, a busy day doing little jobs. I got around to finishing off the front bumper, its a vast improvement from what it was but it needs a proper paint as all its got is some cheap black gloss to temporarily cover it. Thanks again Gav for the bumpercoat paint! Just a few before and after photos of rubbing down, priming and painting. I also did the window wipers too as they were worse for wear.. Primed Finished

Ahh thanks Gav! You are also one of the members I have aspired to and have a lot of time for when it comes to attetion to detail. And yes the factory spec look will become rarer as more people modify these cars. And that silver ke70 you bought..... please don't touch it. Clean it up and garage it with the others! :P Does this bumpercoat leave a semi gloss or matt finish? as I have never tried this before. As abundant as these ke70's are, I'm suprised you didnt buy just a below average ke70 which appear to frequent this site and use that for kharnacross. Seriously let this one be the exception Gav. don't wreck or tear it apart. Please.. I really thought it would be in good hands.

Then it was time to fix the bumper, the passenger end cap didnt have a bolt keeping it secure where it should have been, therefore letting it droop down. In two minutes it was fixed. Before During the process Next thing will be adjusting the gap under the headlight as the bumber has a slight droop towards the end. Then it will be sanding the front bumper back where the black paint has come off and give it a refresher again.

Okay, as I said in previous posts I gave the car its second polish after the initial cut it got last week. The paint was smooth then but now is rediculously slippery! Anything that was rested on the car simply slid off, even my eagle one polishing tin kept coming off the boot lid. I gave all the mudflaps got the black dye put on them to reduce the use of armourall and I got around to fixing the LH corner of the front bumper bar. During.. It runs and purrs like a kitten, and shines like one too. Looks preety red dosent it? I don't know why the photo makes the panel under the tail lights look lumpy.... its straight as an arrow.

Hi Chris, Its all good. The winscreen was buffed out and the other things were rectified so the car is officially roadworthy and it was picked up today.

That looks very nice mate, do you have the standard wheels for the front? If it had standards it would look perfect. Start up a thread soon as I would like to read about it.

Without being biased towards my car, but I think it was one the cleanest ae71's both body wise and mechanically that entered his workshop despite some niggles as I went thoroughly though every part of the car I could think of bearing in mind it was purchased last saturday 12th dec so not much time was on hand to rectify every little thing, but all in all I think dad and I did preety damn well job though. All mechanics operate differently Evan. I wasnt aware that the lh ball joint was worn as I'm not that mechanically inclined to look for those signs... anyway that is what these guys are paid to look for which they found. But what I wasnt impressed with was that he told first off the windscreen would have to be replaced and after calling him back to see if it can be repaired and being told yes it can annoys me because if I didnt ask and just accepted his word it would have been more money spent for nothing... Anyway as I said in a previous post, it got settled and the car will be fixed tomorrow so its roadworthy then it can be registered.. I can't wait.. updates soon.

Congratulations on getting the car registered Matt, I like satin blacked brake components as its looks very neat. Now what exactly is the meaning behind the new plates? Would like to see this car or both in the flesh as they are very nice examples of a ke30 and 55. Now are you still after a good condition dash pad?

Okay update: I spoke to the roadworthy mechanic today and here is what the car needs. Only a few things... 1, LH parking light globe 2, LH lower ball joint replaced 3 Window wiper rubbers 4, Unroadworthy windscreen..... I didnt mind paying to have items 1-3 replaced but the windscreen looked perfectly fine to me as there was no sandblasting, chips or cracks in the areas of vision. Over the phone the mechanic said "its unroadworthy" as there are scratches, so I asked how much a replacement was which was $180-190.00 which I disagreed to. So after talking to him I thought well if you can repair chips, surely you can polish out scratches (which my screen had) so I called him back and asked specifically where the scratches were and can they be polished out as the windscreen certainly looked fine too and others who saw the car.. Anyhow after a few minutes he came back and said the scratches are in the field of vision but are able to be polished out. I asked how much and was told $60-70.00 which was much better than the first quote, so I agreed for them to do the complete roadworthy on the car...

Thanks mate, all it takes is a fair bit of effort and time but in the end the result is worth it. When I saw this on the side of the looking like what it did, I could see the potential this had after being cleaned up and here it is.

Hey Josh, roadworthy is happening tomorrow so I'll be informed on what needs to be done. Once I have the rwc I can atleast go to vicroads, transfer the car into my name and just pay for the rego and keep the same plates which appears to be a possibility which is a good thing. Thanks mate.

Hi Matt, I was thinking the same thing. The car just needs a few finishing touches but before I do that all I want is for it to be regoed so I can drive it around for a bit to see how it goes. Then later on I'll replace things like the broken pinstrips with new ones and the rear bumper will eventually be replaced too. I'll adjust the front bumper and sand it back (as its been painted) so it looks right. Also I have a rear louvre for it too, but more importantly the existing clips are already on the window. You will certainly be filled in on the progress my friend! Does you dad have a garage in victoria st Brunwick? if your there on a weekend i'll pop in as grandma lives around there. Thats was I was thinking Dave, because the rego just ran out on the 29 of oct 09 so its in the 3 month period. I was thinking of getting the rwc, then when I go to vicroads to transfer the cars details into my name then I would just pay the rego and keep the old plates on the car.. Does that sound right? As opposed to paying the rego before getting the rwc or transferring the car in my name. I hope I didnt confuse you..

Thanks undertaker and Andy, I'm glad you both like it! I'm not too sure how metallic blue would come up Andy, I know with solid colours if theres enough paint to polish it, it is possible to have an as new finish. But with metallic I'm not too sure... all you can do is give it a try. Do you have a peroper buffing machine with cutting compound? I had to prop my battery up so it sits higher in its cradle in order to be secured by the top brace. And with some wood cut down to size and painted black it fitted perfectly in the tray and now the battery sits snug in its cradle, so it should pass part of the road worthy... The battery prop, once its under the battert it is barely noticeable. Next it was the engines turn to get some attention, just below the distributor there was a very old oil leak over time that spread down the block onto the cross member and rack boot. It sounds worse than what it really is. Anyway a trip down to the car wash soon solved that issue, so gone was the grease/oil and surrounding dust. Before, a little dirty and dusty but still not my cup of tea... A few more after photos, this time all the pipes, hoses basically the whole engine bay was cleaned up to shine... Much better! Now just a question. I bought this car with just expired rego so its still on their database, but I still have the plates and want to put them back on the car and I was told a from a guy at vicroads that I could provided I had the car roadworthied and when I broguht the car and the relevant transfer papers in, I could pay for the expired rego (as i still have the papers and put the existing plates on the car... But here is where the problem is... dad went in to vicroads to book the car for next week and the woman said as the rego has expired the plates would have to be handed in and I would have to pay $30.00 for some 2009 general issue plate which I don't want... OR alternatively pay $200.00 to get the originals remade which I will certainly not do as I already have the originals.. Surely the first guy I spoke to was right in what he said, because what this woman said dosent sound right. My question is this, I have seen other people by cars with rego run out and sold with no rwc but have been able to re register the car with the same plates on? any ideas. Becasue my plan was to go to vicroads with my road worthy and transfer papers, get it signed over in my name and once it was then pay/ re new the 2010 rego and then put the existing plates on the car. If there was a small fee to pay id pay it, but like I said the first gut I spoke to never mentioned a fee, all he said was once the car was roadworthy, the rego could be payed/re newed and the old plates could be put back on.... I hope I didnt confuse anyone. And I hope he was right too.

Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated!! The car will be booked in for its roadworthy on Thursday morning so a few preparations and checks were made..... The front brakes were perfect along with the rear shoes that had plenty of life left in them along with the rear cylinders.... The front wheel bearings had a bit of play in them so they were adjusted accordingly and its nice and tight now. I gave the rear muffler a coat of paint to give it a fresh look to tie in with the car also... Heres more some photos... Rear drivers shoe.... perfect Passengers side photo..... perfect Nice tyres More finishing.... It came up preety well considering I paid $200.00 for the car! As its my daily it will be in top condition mechanically and body wise as I want it to last some time! Next will be painting of the wiper arms, and a detailing of the engine bay...

Evan do know if they are 13 inch?, if not and they are 14 you could probably get some corona wheels and tyres to put these on.. Sorry i don't know how to photoshop.

All that was yesterday, (saturday) after buying the car we didnt muck around. Today was more of little things that had to be done so thanks to Paul (stahls_ae86), he gave me a headlight assembly as inside the passenger headlight the plastic chrome reflector deformed from the heat, so within a few minutes it was changed over and it was time to go to a few wrckers to get the following things: two matching flat dished trim rings, a 1.6 badge for the passenger guard and a brake pedal rubber. I was lucky to find one clean but faded blue ae71 auto at the wreckers that had what I was after so again within a few minutes I had what I needed and came home ready to polish and install. Though i'm still after one particular centre cap, maybe you may have one?? let me know as I have an unmatching substitute on there! Once that was done the remaining wheel trims and centre caps were taken off to be polished and refitted and came up a treat.. Fixing the passenger side headlight Next the bumpers will be treated with a black dye so I don't have to armourall all the time, followed by the door mouldings, mudflaps and mirror. But first it needs to pass a roadworthy which I can't see why it wouldnt as the general roadworthy requirements on the car seem well above average.

The interior was in need of some attention, so with a bit handy andy, hot water and a rag off came all the build up of grease on the steering wheel, front door cards, arm rests, console, etc,etc. Then a good thorough vacuuming was in order which a lot stuff was vacuumed out, then lastly mum cleaned up the seats and now they are as new. Only the drivers seat has a tear in the back rest which will be reupholdstered at some stage. Before After Dad finshing the body after welding... After finishing welding, treating, priming and painting the paint will be cut back so its bleneded into the surrounding paintwork for nice finish.

This thread is worthy of an update as I have bought myself another soon to be daily. (As dad needs the ae82 back to drive around in). A while back I took the ke70 for a small run a few km's from grandmas place where its kept and I decided to turn down one street and a very clean ae71 in red caught my attention. However at the time I was looking for a ke30 or 55 so I didnt particularly pay too much attention to it. After months of car searching I didnt find what I wanted so I decided to have a look at a few ke70's or ae71's. The first ke70 I looked at was red and very clean but it had 363,000 city km's on it so it was preety grindy and loose after a test drive. The second one which some of you may have seen on ebay was a red ae71 cs-x auto sedan. The photos looked promising but in person the body needed a lot of work and was not worth the $1,500 asking price. Mechanically it drove very well despite having a leaking head gasket... anyway I let that one pass. Then I remembered the nice and clean ae71 that was near grandamas, so I hopped in the car and went back to where it was and it was in the same spot, all faded with cobwebs over it so I decided to ask if they were interested in selling it. The owner said the car was last driven 6 months ago as an electrical fault occured and the daughter wasnt prepared to fix the car, so thats where it stayed. But after a replacement of some parts from the mobile mechanic, it was purring like a kitten and drove perfectly. Soon enough a deal was settled and with a driving permit it was driven back home to get the love it deserved...... 78 7krolla gave me some inspiration too. So the specs are.... 1984 ae71 Corolla Cs in auto. I know its auto but it drives very, very well and is responsive enough for me, so no conversion is in order. 193,600km. Red in colour with grey interior with as new tyres and all mudflaps and other original fixtures and fittings that will be cleaned up and left there. It had some rust, but it was quite little and it was in the usual spots above the tail lights, lh wheel arch and thats about it. The rest of the body is perfect apart from dents and stains on the seats. The interior was thoughly detailed with the help of mum and it came up as new, and dad did the rust cutting welding and finishing of the mentioned rust areas while I helped him too, and between that I cut and polished the whole car by buff and hand with cutting compound which will be followed by a second polish with the soft cream/wax polish. There is nothing wrong with ae82's I feel they are under estimated as they handle quite well, have ample power from the 4ac and drive beautifully with a 5 speed gearbox. Here is a photo of dads one which all I did was put an aftermarket front spoiler on the front bumper, installed some series one cs-x alloys and detailed the bumpers black and its perfect. They are a very good car.
