  1. That's a good point, I think people don't realise how much they are spending on the little things here and there. When I got my 20v installed it was all done by my mechanic (drove in with a 4ac, drove out 20v with everything thats on it now). The bill was... quite large. My mechanic is pretty meticulous so I can see pretty much where every dollar went. Even for the parts alone it was a lot more expensive than people would initially think (not cause he has overcharged me, just the shear number of little things).
  2. Same thing happened when we resprayed the 55. Had almost a whole 3 litre icecream container of bolts, clips and various other things that we hadn't put back on (and had no idea where they went). It's not like you need all the bolts in anyway :) I drove almost 1000kms with only 14 wheel nuts.
  3. I took my Sprinter along. Got about the same reading on the dyno as the last time 67.3 this time (68 last time). It's a little bit lower than it should be getting, but I probably won't get it looked at until I've done some other stuff around the car. Was a good day overall. You can see my pictures here: http://www.photos.tregearit.com/main.php?g2_itemId=5132
  4. I did the oil pressure sensor in my Silvertop about 2 weeks ago. Was quite messy, covered the engine bay in oil and left a nice puddle on the side of the road. Was told by the mechanic who installed the engine I needed to have the part originally to the car (and dash) not the engine or else the oil pressure gauge wouldn't work.
  5. Hehe, it only makes 58rwkw but it's still a lot of fun (especially with the car being so light). I took it to Marulan Driver Training Center last year. Because of how light the car was I was able to keep up with (and almost get closer to) some of the bigger cars (Monaros etc) through the corners that were close together, but as soon as I hit the straights it showed it short legs (especially against a brand new R35 skyline, lol). We were considering supercharging it. But when I was driving it regularly I never really had any issues. It had just the right amount of power to make it fun and drivable on the road, but not too much that I got myself in to trouble. These days the car is in a different state, and I drive it whenever I go back home as I've now got a 20v Silvertop AE86.
  6. I had a KE70 for a while in which I had trouble seeing the speedo at night... turns out the lights behind the dash had been dimmed right down. Also on my KE55 at one point the wire into the dimmer switch was disconnected and caused the lights to stop working... You could check on both of those things to see if that gets the lights working again or helps.
  7. Yeah, my dad measured the angle and made up the extensions to make the bowls vertical. Here are two pictures of it before (you can see the angle) And other picture after Unfortunately I don't have any better pics at the moment of the engine bay after the extensions were added. You can see them a little in the picture.
  8. It's running a 3k sump, seems to be the standard thing to do with the 7ks.
  9. When we fitted my twin SU's and Lynx manifold we had to make an extension to attach the carby upright to the manifold. Might be a pic or two of the finished product on my 7k KE55 thread.
  10. mmmm Black 86, thinking of painting mine black. Very nice looking rides.
  11. By a "complete package" I think he means a halfcut, that should have more of the bits you need (loom etc), but it still might need to be converted to RWD (not exactly sure what else that needs). I recently got a 20v put into my AE86, all the work was done by my mechanic and it ended up taking quite a while and there were lots of hiccups along the way. Sam Q has a good reference for doing the AE86 20v conversion, so you can check out his site (http://s-86.com/). I thought the 4AGZE was 16v and the 20v (silver and blacktop) we both N/A... I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's what wikipedia said last time I read the "Toyota A Series Engine" article.
  12. I had a 1 7/8 inch on my KE55 when I had the stock 4k and a 2inch when I had my worked 7k. Neither was super loud which is good (as you don't want to piss off your neighbours too much) but both still sounded great. You want to go for a nice sound over shear volume. I've got a 2inch sports exhaust with extractors on my 20v AE86 and it sounds great (little loud and low sometimes though). Overall though yours should sound fine.
  13. The rest of the weekend hasn't been too bad... (except for having to work on Saturday). Just crossing my fingers that it all gets fixed soon so I have a way to get to and from work and so I can go to the CCG dyno day on Sunday.
  14. Yeah, the engine hasn't seized or anything, so once the new switch goes in everything should be good :P It's a pain though cause now I don't know how I will get to work next week, lol. I also wanted to go to the Canberra Celica Club dyno day, which is on Sunday the 20th :y: if everything goes well I should have the car back by then, if not then I might waste $55. I just checked the forum post advertising it, and it was $55 if you prepaid by yesterday (the 13th) so it looks like I might just have to pay on the day and pay $60.
  15. Bad Day :P - Broken Oil Pressure Switch I checked the oil in the Silvtertop on Friday before work, it was low (not empty, but just above the low line) so I decided to ad a little more before heading to work. I topped the oil up (added maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of a liter) then headed off to work. The oil pressure gauge was a little high, but not really higher than normal. About 5 to 10 minutes down the road I noticed a little bit white smoke out the back, which suddenly turned into a massive plume behind the 86. I immediately pulled over and popped the hood in time to see all of the oil in the engine empty out onto the ground and the entire engine covered in oil. I got the sprinter towed to a random mechanic who straight away diagnosed it as the oil pressure switch. He's ordered one in, but it will probably be a day or two before it comes in (and Monday is a public holiday). To make matters worse: While waiting for the tow truck I rolled the car a little down the hill (so I could try and get a better look at the engine without standing in oil) and ended up rolling it right next to a stinky dead kangaroo I caught the wrong bus while heading home to get my gfs car then had to walk from the shops. I tripped over later in the day, landed on my phone and cracked the screen. Ended up having to work first thing on Saturday morning (with no overtime).
  16. I'll butt in with what my mechanic reminds me of every time I talk about rims... In Vic I'm pretty sure the rule of thumb is that you can't have rims that are more than 2 inches bigger than stock, so if it comes stock with 12s the biggest you can go is 14s. This might not be completely true and you'll probably get away with it as long as they don't look stupidly large.
  17. The back seat of my 55 is almost exclusively used for cargo, when we put in the new carpet we lost the bolts that hold it in, so now it's really easy to rip the bottom part of the seat out. It's not like you can really fit more than one extra person in most rollas anyway :P
  18. Congratulations on the doors. Can be hard finding decent panels for the old rollas and ronas. When I started trying to clean up my first corolla (a KE35) I looked everwhere for a good front passenger side guard and drivers door (in the end found a 55 with the parts and started working on that instead). There's nothing wrong with driving a grandmas car.... I have a knitted nanna blanket on the parcel shelf of my A86 :P
  19. There's no real answer to this one, it comes a lot down to preference. You can get the engine worked, chuck on a turbo, go a 5k (they have an extra 100ccs and rev a bit better) or go a 7k (not as revving but more torque). There's a million other different engines too that you could probably put in, but once you go away from the k's things get a little more complicated. I have a worked 7k running twin SUs in my 55, made 58rwkw a couple of years ago on the dyno, goes nice and hard. Hasn't got a stupid amount of power, and the torque makes it nice to drive. I had a 4k in my old KE35, and in my 55 before the 7k dropped in, then I had a wagon with a 4k, which I then dropped back in the 55 while the 7k was having some work done, I never really had any problems with how "hard" the 4k engines went though. Rollas are never really known for having insane amounts of power (especially stock), don't worry you'll get used to being the underdog after a while :)
  20. As for the boosting later, you will need to do a bit of work to the engine to make sure it can handle the boost (eg if you have a 20v you have to mix black and silvertop bits and change the compression etc), I guess that's true of pretty much every engine though. Just thought I'd say it just so people don't think they can just buy a turbo one arvo and bolt it on :) (without damaging the engine).
  21. Saw this posted on AE86DC as well. I'm pretty keen to go along (wanna see what my car reads on another dyno, cause the last one it was tested on reads fairly low) and it would be cool if there were some other rollaclub guys, could make a cruise/afternoon of it.
  22. Sounds good to me. Went to the Hume go karting on the weekend. It was good but there was so much variation in the karts (had one where I couldn't turn the wheel and another that had no brakes) so I'm keen to hit Fyshwick karts at some point.
  23. Hehehe, I guess they have to cover the obvious cases. I had trouble finding out whether I could legally/easily replace my 4k with 7k-c, had one guy say all I had to do was bring it down and they'd check the engine numbers and had another say I'd need an engineers cert but it would be unlikely. Not looking forward to the day where I change over the 4AC to 20v :)
  24. When I first saw it I thought it looked terrible.. but then I looked at it again and thought it looked good and unique at the end of the day though you are the one driving it :abuse: It's a beautiful car and would look fine either way. I do agree though that adding some more red to tie it in would look good. When I first sprayed my 55 it was blue with silver stripes. We spray all the interior with black vinyl spray and put in new black carpet. My plan was to have black, silver and blue theme going, and I was thinking of adding black flares, a black bonnet scoop and a black spoiler. When we were getting the 7k worked though we get the block painted red (not sure why red, seemed right at the time). Then some guy offered to sell me a red sparco race seat. So when it came to the time to get a new wheel I decided on a red momo wheel. Some people think adding the red into the mix doesn't fit, but I think it looks good.
  25. I was thinking of doing this ages ago for my 55, but never ended up doing it (as I'm too lazy and didn't wanna screw it up).
