There is a thread about a bloke doing this in the states floating around the web somewhere. He is using front struts in the rear of his '82 and I think he was using a celica diff or something of the like with custom CV's to suit. He was setting it all up on a rear section of an '82 he had so he could get it right before swapping it to his driver.

it wouldnt b as dear as you think to insure as you think, i got a quote for full comprehensive insurance on my KE70 (the only stock bit left is the steering :) ) and the worst quote i got was $1200 a year for $12000 coverage, and I'm under 25.

 

Also, whilst GTiR's are front heavy, they can b made to handle well, you just need to get used to driving them differently. You have to b on the power all the way through a corner, if you back off, u end up in the bushes ;)

 

Either way, while it would be a pain in the ass to set up an AWD rolla, it would b pretty cool...

 

personally, i'd just buy a Kultus (Susuki Swift AWD) :D

my n12, even though Fwd, is the same, turns heaps better when on the power (not too much though, wheel spin will cause problems)

GTiRs are dogs through corners (very front-heavy), gearboxes are quite weak, imported and turbo so insurance is a nightmare.....

 

why insure it? only worth $8k. after 4-6 years of ownership you would be ahead if you saved the insurance money. Personally i'd buy a wrx for $12-15k and not insure. great awd car stock standard.

and i would rather a GTiR over a WRX anyday, sorry but I'm not a fan of changing clutches and gearboxes every other week, even if GTiR's do have weak g/boxes, I'd still rather the power & reliability of an SR20 over a WRX anyday.

If youre that hard on gearboxes just slap a big fat dog engagement gearset in there. Ive seen a standard box withstand 260kw drag launches for a low 12 pass so they can't be that weak. He was even trying to break it (as he was going to an aftermarket gearset).

Definitely agree with irokin and Fat Bastard. Just get something that already has what you want rather than flushing money down the toilet trying to convert to AWD. It's just not feasible or sensible. Sure it'd be different to everything else out there, but at what price?

GT4s are WAYYYY heavy. Like almost falcondore heavy. The ST205 is 1500kg!!! The ST185 is a bit better at 1400kg. The weight is the big thing that put me off GT4s (I was planning to buy one, but got the silvia instead woohoo 1180kg!)
