want to strip all paint from some hanging panels to begin body repairs

what is the best process?

 

acid tank/chemically strip

OR

abrasive blasting ~ sandblasting, soda, glass bead, plastic garnet.... what is the best?

 

where in melbourne can you recommend which is good service and price not too steep?

use an orbital sander with some abrasive paper. any sort of dipping will strip the coating off of the inside of the pannel which you don't want.

 

same with a media blasting.

 

it doesnt take long with an electric sander/polisher.

That depends on whats used to blast the panel.

 

Bead blasting isnt that great, but I've heard good things about soda blasting.

I've used sand blasting in my engine bay. Wouldn't recommend it. You go through way too much sand to get not much done and it's not very cost effective to do it yourself. I would recommend, as someone else did, sanding the paint back with an orbital sander. Works well, quickly and is quite inexpensive, even if you do have to buy the sander. You can get electric or air ones. I've got an electric one and it works great :S

Same as Raven, i've also heard good things about soda blasting but no one from around my area seems to do it :D

Random orbital sander, the double action jobs. Tend to find high spots and take them down.

 

Alkaline paint stripper is pretty good to, just paint it on, and half an hour later paint scrape the soft squishy crap off, and then hit the remaining crap with the random orbital.

 

Or you could use a flap disc, takes the paint off REAL quick. And half the panel hahaha.

Once you have taken all of the paint off (i prefer paint stripper), i recommend buying a purple scotch brite pad, they take no metal off at all but polish it nicely ready for etch.

Paint stripper, stripping discs and wire wheels. Brush on some stripper then put glad wrap on it and come back the next day. This will stop the solvents in the stripper from evaporating and allow it to do it's work through the bog.
