Sounds good to me!

So summing up this thread, taking it easy with a modded 5K and the K50 will live. Occasional bashing won't hurt... everyday thrashing will force me to get a stronger box for it...

But to put my mind at ease, I'd get my hands on a Celica 5 Speed (Steel Case) and this will hold out longer.

Sounds good enough?

i have been running the same $150 ke70 K50 in my ke15 for over 4 years, and it is still going strong. i initially had it behind a tough 4k with which i did 100's of flat changes into second wrapping up v6 commys and the like. in fact when i took it out to willowbank it was chirping 3rd gear on the quarter with sticky A539s on the back.

i blew up the first pressure plate i had behind that motor after a few months, and replaced it with a modded 5k item. it has been cut with a rough cross hatch pattern on the pressure plate face, and grips like crazy for a near stock item. when i changed from the last 4k to my current 5k, i bought a new clutch plate. i needn't have bothered, as the old one still looked brand new. not bad after all the abuse i gave it over 3 years or so, including second gear clutch dumps during handbrake turns at motorkhanas.

one thing that needs to be considered though is that a ke15 is probably 150 - 200 kgs lighter than a ke30-55.

i sort of think most people who break boxes on a regular basis, need to learn how to drive, and be a little easier on their equipment. i know myself when i was younger i had a ke30 with a near stock 4k, i blew up 5 k40 boxes behind that.....

I don't think I drive particularly hard on my gearbox, if anything at all I'm a lot harder on the brakes. The strangest thing is the first 3 boxes lost 4th gear. I mean, who breaks 4th gear? You can't even dump 4th gear...

I had a K50 behind a lightly worked 5K (carbs compression exhaust) with an uprated clutch. Driving included spirited street driving, some clutchless changes, and motorkhanas. It held up ok. It eventually broke through driver error. Hitting 1st gear at 50km/h didn't do firdt gear any good. Took three teeth off the gear but it was still drivable until I sourced another box. Also I was running 225/60/13's on the back so to get them spinning to a bit of effort.

As one gearbox repairer once said

"If you keep breaking our boxes, we suggest you change your driving style or by an automatic"

all of my K50's have lost all BUT 4th gear, but they were all 180,000 mi junkyard units......

are the k-t bell housings easy to come by, and will a t50 fit my tunnel?

I don't think there's any way I can do the events I do well, and be any "nicer" to the gearbox (and if there is, someone please point it out to me). I do use the clutch when I change, and I generally heel-toe most of the time. So I guess that's it, I'm getting an auto

motorkhanas aren't nice on your equipment at all. you really need to uprate your gearbox fook, W55 time?

your 3 boxes that had 4th die must have had rooted bearings when you put them in. isn't 4th straight through?

I guess that's it, I'm getting an auto

add a big stally and a turbo

Grinding teeth out of 4th... hmmm, I don't think I could do that even if I tried to! hahahaha

Sorry I upset you Fook, it was just a general comment.

I'm surprised you are breaking fourth gear, it seems weird.

I've only changed one gearbox in my club car in six years due to a pin falling out of the linkage and leaving it stuck in second. I'm lucky as most of the events I do are on dirt so everything seems to get an easy time (except for diffs  seem to do one every 18 months or so).

I also had a mate that broke a 9" diff which was behind a mild 351. Sometimes shit happens.

I think I just keep buying rooted gearboxes.

Doug: I have looked into upgrading, and it will be a very expensive exercise. I can get a fully rebuilt (new gears, syncros, bearings etc) stock T50 for less money, so will probably go that way before I look into an upgrade, if it came down to that. At least then I'll know I have a good box, and if it does break then I'll know it's really something I'm doing (cause obviously with 69hp I really shouldn't be able to break a good T50). Ideally I'd like to get a close ratio box, but hahaha, money doesn't grow on trees. Not the trees in my backyard anyway...

Of course there is actually no such thing as a 4th gear as the hub locks the sleeve and locks the input and output shafts together to achieve 1 to 1 drive straight through the box.Yeah 2nd and 3rd gear in k series boxs get the teeth ripped of for sure but my mates building me a dog box sequential 5 speed in a k50 housing to go behind my new 180hp n/a 5k mwhaha

So Blown 5K.. any news on Operation K50 Dogbox? :)

And apparently in Xany's thread about his 5K, you mentioned the following:

T series bellhousings to k-series engines, while most a hydraulic as suggested there is a cable operated clutch bellhousing available and gearbox to suit that will bolt straight into the ke30 type floorpan.

Does the same apply to a KE55?

short answer.....yes

long answer.....if you can find one that is still in good condition...(the bellhousing)....then you're doing good.

Question is, would anybody know a part number so I could try and track one down abit easier?
