harun Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 Can anyone shed some light on removing the axles out of the diff for a KE20, i read up on the manual however does not tell you much.I have removed the brake system from it and is left with just the backing plate.I have tried to use a crowbar to loosen the axle of its bearing however have not had much progress. drc_ke20 Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 Use a Slide Hammer http://www.tooldesk.com/images/closeupFile/ATD-3045_lg.jpg Quote
Felix Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 A rim with the wheel nuts done up a half dozen turns or so makes a good slide hammer. You have undone the 4 nuts that hold the axle retaining plate? Quote
parrot Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 I always use a rim with tyre as per Felix, the extra weight of the tyre helps move it. Make sure the car is secure on its stands or whatever, and keep your legs out from under the car in case it falls off. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 If they've never been removed they can be quite tight and take a bit of work. If they have been removed recently they won't be as hard. I normally just use the brake drum turned around the other way with a couple of wheel nuts on it. If thats not enough then try the whole wheel. Quote
AE25 Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 (edited) haha can't remove bearing from the axle with crow bar. the bearing slides out of the diff housing once you've undone the 4 retaining bolts. i got sick of smashing axles out after they wouldn't budge. so made my own axle puller. consists of a ke2 shock shaft, large washer welded on end, the center of a drum (to suit axle) cut out and an old steering arm welded to it to clear the spigot, and a large diesel engine gudgeon pin. works everytime! slide hammer version 1 failed. using driveshaft and brake drum/disk. kept breaking welds on the disk.. meh cast iron. sliding the drum was awkward too. 13BT_KE20 Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 I normally just use the brake drum turned around the other way with a couple of wheel nuts on it. If thats not enough then try the whole wheel. this is how ive always done it, as mentioned if it havnt been out before it will need a fair wack to get it out. Makes sure the car is secured properly and your not under it at all! Quote
harun Posted February 22, 2010 Author Report Posted February 22, 2010 Thanks for the input fellas, unfortunately using the car as a weight is out of the question as the diff is off the car.if i am to use the drum or wheel, does that mean that i will be pulling on it while the diff is held down by something or someone. There goes my back !!! lol Quote
Taz_Rx Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 I doubt someone (under 200kg) could really hold it down enough for you. See if you can't clamp it to a bench or something, or get part of it stuck behind a bench vice etc. Quote
