LowVp Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 when i got under my ae82 i noticed how much it looked like a mcv20 camry underneath and even the struts and the other day i had to replace the front rubber brake lines and i got a thinking what would be involved in putting mcv20 camry brakes all round. has anyone done a brake upgrade from another model other then a rolla Quote
beerhead Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 The biggest drama will be the stud pattern. 4 x 100 vs 5 x 114.3. You could have the rotors redrilled, but you'd have to measure the stud spacing on the calipers and there offset to see if it'll work. Quote
LowVp Posted May 3, 2010 Author Report Posted May 3, 2010 i mean the hole hub from the bottom of the strut to the lower control arm Quote
Johno Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 (edited) If you want a really simple brake upgrade for your ae82 then just head to the wreckers and grab some calipers and meaty rotors from a Ae92 corolla. The calipers are about 20% bigger than the standard ones on the ae82. You'll defiantly feel the difference. :) Also grab yourself some good quality pads like Bendix or something. Thats what i did and I got no problem stopping now :) Edit: just read your first post.. :P Not sure what you could use other than another corolla Edited May 3, 2010 by Johno Quote
GJM85 Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 Yeah i'd try and keep it simple and efffecctive. Anyone know what's involved in a rear drum to disc conversion on a ae92 seca>? I've seen the disc kits on ebay but not sure about calibers, lines and studs and what have you. I was thinking maybe front calipers if i can get the rear rotors off ebay. Is it worth the risk? Ive bought stuff off ebay before and been severly disappointed. Quote
Johno Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 i'm only speaking from experience from a ae82 corolla, I converted my sedan over to disk brake rear end. Its not too hard, you just have to get the calipers, disks, brake lines and hubs from a twinky. Just pull all the drum brake gear off and bolt on the new stuff. You have to change the hubs (which is really easy to do, just 4 bolts) you have to change em because otherwise the disk rotor wont fit on. I'm sure its would be the same for the ae92 but not 100% sure Quote
towe001 Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 Way way to much hassle in converting the mcv20 rotors and calipers over to the ae82 If you want a really simple brake upgrade for your ae82 then just head to the wreckers and grab some calipers and meaty rotors from a Ae92 corolla. Urm, your meaning the ae92 twincam yes ? Cause the single cam ae92 uses the same rotors as the 82 single cam. For a nice quick and easy brake upgrade is to, yes hunt down a wrecked '82 twinky and swap over the brakes front and back. I think the '92 twinky has different rear disc design, the rotors are the same but i think the hubs are different. Something even better for the front - ae93 twinky (258mm rotors) and their calipers if you can't find the calipers track down ae102 (not the ae101) or ae112. It'll all bolt up to the ae82 hubs etc. If your after a serious brake upgrade ae101 superstrut. Its not a bolt on fit and go. http://www.toymods.org.au/forums/showthrea...ight=superstrut http://www.twincam.org/topic/1063-ae92-ae8...pgrade-options/ And for interest sake the twin piston caliper from the superstrut http://www.toymods.org.au/forums/showthrea...ight=superstrut www.dba.com.au and do some chasing - the important things you'll be looking for is the centre hole 54mm and the height of the rotor 48mm. That way you'll be able to keep the same struts and hubs for changing over the rotors and calipers. Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 Urm, your meaning the ae92 twincam yes ? Cause the single cam ae92 uses the same rotors as the 82 single cam. No such thing as a singlecam AE92 :) They're all twincam, you probably mean the SX, but from memory (so don't quote me) Series 2 AE82 Twincams use the same front brakes (can't be sure about the rears) as the Series 1 AE92/93 SXs. Johno Posted May 4, 2010 Report Posted May 4, 2010 No such thing as a singlecam AE92 :P They're all twincam, you probably mean the SX, but from memory (so don't quote me) Series 2 AE82 Twincams use the same front brakes (can't be sure about the rears) as the Series 1 AE92/93 SXs. Yeah the ae92 SX is the one with a 4age and has rear disks :) , just like the ae82 4age. I'm pretty sure your right about the front brkaes, AE82 twinkys share the same brakes as the ae92. You can just get any regular ae92 brakes.. doesnt have to be SX model for the front brakes. I think ae94 also use the same calipers :) Quote
19914afc Posted May 4, 2010 Report Posted May 4, 2010 holden nova came out single cam, and ive seen a very very pov pack ae92 with a single cam. Quote
GJM85 Posted May 4, 2010 Report Posted May 4, 2010 there is a ae84 seca being sold on ebay at the moment as a ae92. It is clearly the pre '89 seca with a 4ac but it even the VIN his AE92 in it. . . . suss! :) ebay Quote
towe001 Posted May 4, 2010 Report Posted May 4, 2010 No such thing as a singlecam AE92 :bash: They're all twincam, :bash: yeah leave me alone i've got a man cold :bash: You can just get any regular ae92 brakes.. doesnt have to be SX model for the front brakes. The calipers made for a solid rotor won't fit a vented rotor and the same can be said for rotors of different thicknesses yadda yadda yadda Quote
Trev Posted May 4, 2010 Report Posted May 4, 2010 holden nova came out single cam, and ive seen a very very pov pack ae92 with a single cam. Never did, All sold in aus were twincam. Unless you are putting heaps of power into the car then I would just do an AE82 twincam brake upgrade. Quote
19914afc Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 Never did, All sold in aus were twincam. Unless you are putting heaps of power into the car then I would just do an AE82 twin cam brake upgrade. ive seen a nova in at work with a 6af or something and it was defiantly single cam. Quote
MYSTIK[RL] Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 ive seen a nova in at work with a 6af or something and it was defiantly single cam. 6afc is of the same twincam(1 cam which drives the slave) design as the 4afc, 4afe and the 7afe :jamie: Quote
