SLW42 Posted December 14, 2010 Report Posted December 14, 2010 Hi guys a mate of mine has a late model tj wrangler and it wont start after degresing the engine, we have pulled all the plugs out and blown them out, pulled the earths off almost everything to do with anything, checked all the fuses, relays wires, even belted the solanoid the thing is if you bridge the the signal wire and the power for the starter motor it winds over, any other things to try?????? altezzaclub Posted December 15, 2010 Report Posted December 15, 2010 the thing is if you bridge the the signal wire and the power for the starter motor it winds over, So, if you hit the key it won't even turn over, never mind start?? Quote
SLW42 Posted December 15, 2010 Author Report Posted December 15, 2010 thats it it just clicks a relay under the dash and nothing Quote
Raven Posted December 15, 2010 Report Posted December 15, 2010 Checked the fuses in the engine bay? Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted December 15, 2010 Report Posted December 15, 2010 Easy solution, sell it and buy a Toyota. It may just dry out and work if ya lucky. Quote
SLW42 Posted December 15, 2010 Author Report Posted December 15, 2010 manwell trev Reed hes got my old 36 wagon Raven we checked every visable fuse under the dash, under the bonnet Quote
jono1986 Posted December 15, 2010 Report Posted December 15, 2010 Can you start the car by bypassing the starter key by placing a jumper between the main power and start terminal on the starter motor? You said it cranks but does it start? What's the wiring look like on that terminal? Buy a multimeter and check voltages and resistances throughout the starter circuit, then go from there. Quote
ke70dave Posted December 15, 2010 Report Posted December 15, 2010 yeah what jono said^^ if it happened after you washed it...then i assume you got water somewhere where you shoulndnt have. how enthusiastic did you get with the hose around your starter motor? Quote
SLW42 Posted December 15, 2010 Author Report Posted December 15, 2010 it was only a garden hose and it was just enough to wash the degreeser off he said, jono - the power wire to the starter is fine, it cranks but wont start, when you turn the key to acc, everything lights up on the dash, then when you turn the key to ign, you can't hear anything i.e fuel pump, then when you try to start it, it just clicks a relay and nothing, I thought maybe try to trick the computer by bridging the main power to the signal wire while the key was at both ign, and start but still would not start and run, just cranked over :( Quote
Trev Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 (edited) My BIL has a 4L auto, it had a few problems that I diagnosed a while back, do a diagnostic check on it, you don't need to use an OBD scanner. To do it turn the ignition from 'OFF' to 'ON' 5 times, on the 5th time the diagnostic system should start flashing out codes via the engine light. Just type any codes you get into google (jeep code 5 etc), there was a website that had all the details but it has been that long that I cannot remember. EDIT: Try this - http://www.allpar.com/fix/80s-codes.html Edited December 16, 2010 by Trev Quote
jono1986 Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 (edited) If you do do that it might be a good idea to erase faults before diagnosing as old faults that have been rectified can still be in the memory. When I wrote that previous post I didn't know it was an EFI motor, you might want to look at the distributor and make sure it's dry, if it's fitted with a airflow meter (not a MAP sensor) it could have water in it. Not sure if the Wrangler has that problem but it's there for you to know  . If it's cranking and not starting I would start to look at sensor's like crank angle or distributor sensor and make sure their operating correctly. This is a very long shot but do you own an oscilliscope? Cause they are a big help when it comes to diagnosing faults with sensors and what not. EDIT: Forgot to mention after you clear all the faults the present faults will automatically pop up after you do the diagnosis check for the second time. Edited December 16, 2010 by jono1986 Quote
Old fella Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 G`day mate, have you thought that it might be as simple as a stuck starter motor. Put the car in top gear with the habdbrake and ignition off and simply rock it back and forth. You should be able to see whether it is turning over and you may hear a click from the starter itself if this is the problem. Cheers and good luck. Quote

jono1986 Posted December 17, 2010 Report Posted December 17, 2010 Yeah like i said, a long shot. Not helpful but it's really something that needs to be looked at in person for me to diagnose. Quote
